I was excited to receive my first book by Anne Bogel, creator of Modern Mrs Darcy.First, the cover is beautiful. It's a great book to display on your shelves. The book is the perfect size for reading as well. At barely over 7 inches tall it fits in your hands for plenty of non-cramping hours of enjoyed reading.Second, this is such a fun book. I devoured the book last night. If you are a reader you will find yourself shaking your head in agreement and laughing at some of the examples and stories Anne writes about here. Readers, you are not alone!Third, Anne seems to be able to pull every kind of reader into her wonderful world in this book. It's not just her world though, it is the reader's world. It does not matter if you only read non-fiction, biographies, mysteries, romance, you will feel like a friend wrote this for your personal enjoyment.Finally, if you are a lover of books about books or books about reading books you will thoroughly enjoy this. One of my favorite chapters is Life Imitates Art. Any 'You've Got Mail' fans out there?Such a lovely addition for all the bibliophiles' libraries out there.

I found myself actually looking forward to exercising as that was the time I used to listen to her podcasts and I had a lot to catch up on. Fast forward a year, I was in groupie heaven when Anne was in Franklin, Indiana three evenings ago on her book launch tour - I was in the audience !I am now the proud owner of two copies of this, both the Kindle format as well as the hard back versions. While I wanted to savor it slowly, I also had the desire to devour it so I compromised and read it over the span of three days.While the book is visually beautiful (the cover is gorgeous and an artist's rendering of her home reading space) and the size makes it a perfect "gifting" book, it short changes it to think of it that way. It was actually a gift I gave myself and loved every page. It's a collection of twenty-one essays, each one a perfectly formed gem. While the essays are highly entertaining and enjoyable to read, they are far from light, fluffy drivel. Each one resonated with me in some fundamental way. Either echoed my thoughts and feelings, stirred a desire for me, or expanded my perspective on the act of reading. Anne is sharp and funny while being incredibly warm and opening her heart to let us take a peek at her reading life.For anyone who is a fan of the blog or podcast, you will find this to be love at first read. For anyone who is a reader and not yet discovered this amazing woman, you are in for a delightful discovery.If you happen to not be a reader (or aspiring reader) yourself, but have those in your life who are -- this would be the perfect gift for them.Bottom line: Inspiring, delightful, insightful. Thought the Quantum Thief novels the best science fiction of the past ten years or so. Bought this the second it came out. Oh no I thought as I began reading. A spy novel. And a fantasy living dead novel. Worse, as I read on, it was clear that it was an attempt at a 'literary' character driven novel. Something no one except maybe Kim Robinson in the first Mars book was ever able to bring off -- that is write a novel where the characters were close to mainstream literary strong but a novel that still had that science fiction sense of wonder that we all crave.But in the breach I found Summerland a serious page turner. Enjoyable. Easy to get through. Emotionally and politically complex. Enough sheer writing talent to make it work. But still. I hope Mr Rajaniemi gets back to writing core science fiction as I believe he is our very best living practitioner of that craft and James Joyce he will never be.
What would the World be like if the scientists in the turn of the 20th century hadn’t discovered atoms and general relativity but aether and connection to dead souls instead? A brilliant parallel universe with its own physics and laws.In the plot with spies and double agents you can never be sure of who is on who’s side. All characters have their own drivers, goals and aspirations. The book ponders what makes us do the things we do, what kind of decisions and sacrifices we are willing to make, what is our purpose in life and the purpose of life itself.
Summerland (Kindle Edition) by Hannu RajaniemiSo, no big deal right? Oh, but let's give some context, as in England in 1938. Also Franco is trying to gain control of Spain. Stalin doesn't want that. And our hero, Mrs. Rachel White, works in intelligence, and deals routinely with agents both living and dead. It's the dead ones that give her the most problems.For a number of reasons, trying to trap a traitor in her own organization is not easy. And her mother keeps annoying her from the afterlife as well. Her husband is a WWI vet who had a very rotten time of it, and now his nightmares become real and he oozes ectoplasm and stuff when he's upset.If this sounds like it's very deliciously twisty and layered, it is! The characters (living and dead) are as real as it gets, and the storyline is tight and well done. Pick it up, you will thank me later!
I feel like I wasted $14. This book had a lot of promise in the beginning that seemed to grind to a halt before picking up momentum again. But when the plot regained momentum it was no longer interesting. It had too much pseudo science and made up terminology that bogged it down. The author should have written one interesting main character with a detailed backstory instead of an interesting main character with a bland backstory and a bland  main character with an interesting backstory.Oh, and the main conflict, that the Summerland is going to be destroyed by a defector, isn't explained. I never found out how that could happen or why. But the whole book harps on it. We are told he's going to destroy it. How? I don't know. But Lennin isn't the only threat to the Summerland. And no one knows how to defeat the real threat. But it's ok because the defector chose to pass valuable information on to the government to save lives. Â
Hannu Rajaniemi imagines a world that diverged from our own, not into the brass technology of steampunk, but into a world where the dead can be communicated with by Marconi's devices, a world of ectophones, ectotanks, and spirit cages. Take that backdrop and mix it with a pre-WWII tale of espionage, and you have a story that keeps you guessing until the end. The two main characters weave a braided path through the narrative, each commanding the reader's sympathies though often appearing to be on opposing sides. The world of the spy, where nothing is what it seems, is mirrored by the world in which it is set, where our history has been turned on its ear by contact with the land of the dead, yet still manages to play out most of the conflicts that marked our history. The story is told with a minimum of explanation; one of the pleasures and one of the challenges of this book is figuring out how this world works, how it diverged from our own, and how some of our historical figures would have reacted in these game-changing circumstances.

I am a retired clergy who somehow missed "Friendship" when it first came out, having read the trilogy "Conversations (books 1-3)" and "Companionship (book 5)". I was delighted to discover and read this segment in the series. The dialogue format is easily read and holds many deep and profound insights, which the average person can grasp. It does not slip into philosophically speculative theology. From the beginning it is grounded in experience. Walsh gives us many autobiographical sketches that help us see the roots of his insights. This will turn off someone who is rigidly fundamentalist "anything," and it will appeal most to the "spiritual but not religious" folk who are searching for some way to articulate the deep driving "knowing" that has made them critics of established religion and yet left them longing for someone to express the unseen, driving energy of the universe. Walsh knows that "God" is not some entity out there, somewhere but within all that is, and he tells us he is using the dialogue motif to help bridge between transcendent theology to imminent theology. It all boils down to accepting the fact that Love is the driving energy of the universe and is what we really are (God in us), even though we are often ignorant or in denial of that and do ourselves and each other great disservice and harm in the process. I have used and encouraged clergy colleagues to read Walsh to help make their preaching "real." This book is no exception, but it is not just for the professionally religious but all who remain life-long seekers of truth.
I decided to purchase FWG after deliberately avoiding the Conversation With God series for many years. I stumbled into another review somewhere that said FWG was a good compilation and extension of Neale's previous writings so I finally "bit". My religious inclinations are broad, to say the least, but any skepticism I had about Neale being a legitimate channel to the Divine gradually faded away into irrelevance. There's a lot to ponder in FWG and as I approach the final chapters, I think it would be time well spent to immediately read it again. Many bracket marks along the margins (in pencil... I don't use highlighters much anymore) convince me that he didn't somehow conjure up the paradoxical but interconnected concepts. In fact, bravely transcribing paradoxical notions seems to be a sign of Truth Ahead for seekers of all persuasions. Neale's biographical hardships and confessions along the way make his authorship just that much more bodacious.I think now (Aug 2012) that Neale is actually tapping into his higher self but not "God" per se.
It was an eye opener on spirituality versus religion. Many people have a hard time with picking a religion or joining a church. God is with us everywhere so we can always join in a conversation with him and tell him how we feel. We can thank God also for the good he has done for us. It is up to each of us to decide how much we want God to be in our lives. It was an easy book to follow with many good questions asked and answered by God.
I have read this book a few times. It is a great book for teaching you to create a friendship with God rather then a one sided relationship where we just talk to or at Him. It is so simple, but so unconventional that it is hard to put this book down. I read the Conversations with God series before reading this and I would recomend that you do the same, though not necessary. This book gives the author some time to talk about his own life, but all the while God is talking about the steps we need to take to create a real friendship with Him. I now use this book as a pick me up, I can just open it at any page and find that the message is exactly what I needed to remind myself about to improve my day. This book is deep and very spiritual. A great addition the the library of anyone on a spiritual path.

Neale's questions are as raw and honest and poignant as are God's answers. An Uncommon Dialogue subtitle does not even begin to address the miracle of this conversation. I promise you, this is no remix of the convoluted angry God you have had shoved down your throat for eons. Dare to meet this one and so meet yourself and discover your own goodness, no matter how undeserving you may believe yourself to be.

It doesn't really have photos, just a few sketches of birds opening each chapter, but that is not the point of this book. The Genius of Birds is about behaviors, patterns, reversal learning, which bird is the "world's dumbest"--yes, it has an offering for that, but not the author's (and I cracked up at that part!!!), the importance of studying birds in their natural environment to learn more and better understand them, and plenty more. The Genius of Birds is a big read, but nothing in it is wasted on the willing reader. I applaud Ackerman for taking me outside and to all sorts of amazing places, when she wrote this uplifting, extraordinary book about beautiful, beautiful birds.

Do birds appreciate beauty itself? Well, you can't stop reading.The book is extensively referenced for readers who want to pursue the topic in more depth. I only wish the author had included some illustrations--the basic anatomy of the avian brain would have been helpful. Or, some of the tools birds make.
