Words cannot express how much I loved this book. Seriously, the book starts strong and never lets up. The fact that the heroine is paraplegic and doesn't "get better" is so rare in fiction that I can count the number of books I've read with that on one hand and still have fingers left over. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Corey is a unique heroine in not her ways she's sporty, uninterested in appearances, and is self reliant to the point of it being a problem. I loved her. But even more I loved Hartley. He's not a true alpha male but he's definitely all dude. But that's selling him short, he's incredibly intuitive and caring and I wanted to rip him out of my iPad and snuggle him.For me, some of the best parts were the scenes where the two solved problems, not just physical but mental. As someone who has had to relearn how to walk, use stairs, and go about daily life, the scenes of Corey coming to terms with her new normal rang true. Physical therapy sucks. Hardcore. But it is a necessary evil and I liked that the book went into that.I could have read 5 more books with Hartley and Corey, but as it is this one will go on my reread list.An enthusiastic 5 stars.

Disabled jocks in love! The Year We Fell Down was so sweet! Just eight months ago, Corey had an accident and is now mostly in a wheelchair. She doesn't let that stop her from moving across the country and starting college, even if her mother won't stop fretting. But Corey is going to do this thing! She may not have hockey anymore, but she does have hockey video games and her sexy neighbor, Hartley, who is currently in a cast after his own accident. The two start up an immediate friendship, but obviously things grow from there.I absolute adored the friendships in The Year We Fell Down. Corey becomes fast friends with her roommate, Dana, and of course with Hartley. She also eventually puts herself out there more and meets some other people when she realizes that pining after her taken neighbor is not the best use of her time and emotions. But their friendship was sooo great! Hartley is so open with Corey and they actually discuss things that she's too embarrassed to talk about with anyone. His birthday gift for her was the absolute best! I cannot believe he did that for her!The Year We Fell Down is a feel good read that's low on drama. There is a little bit, as Corey tries to get over Hartley because he has a girlfriend. But nothing ever gets melodramatic or over-the-top. There's no stupid fight at the end that rips them apart for a few pages either. This is a very sweet friends to lovers romance, and I just adored Corey and Hartley and how they help each other out and care about each other.

Corey is a freshman and looking forward to starting school in a new city far from home. You see, she’s been homeschooled for the latter part of her senior year because she had an accident that caused her undergo major surgery and extensive physical therapy. But, she’s finally on her own with her wheel chair, new dorm room and roommate and life is good. Especially when her next door neighbor is one of the most beautiful men she’s ever seen!Hartley is a junior hockey player but not playing this year due to an leg injury. He’s not happy about missing out but enjoys the benefits of a handicap accessible room. He’s even noticed his neighbor in the wheelchair and find they have a number of classes in common among other things. What forms is an unlikely friendship born out of necessity and solidarity with being the ‘handicapped’ folks in the bunch. But while Hartley sees them as just friends, what’s Corey going to do with all these love emotions swirling around? What’s going to happen when Hartley’s leg heals and Corey remains unable to walk without assistance? This was a really sweet story with all of the angst that you can imagine from young love and college life. I’m looking forward to reading book 2.

This book was AMAZING!!! I really didn't have a clue what this book was about going into it and I think that it really took me by surprise in the best way possible. I've just heard great things and when I have person after person recommend a book, I just go for it. I mean, where do I start? Callahan is my hero(or hope fairy). Sarina Bowen did an amazing job in creating a realistic character with a spinal cord injury. I've been waiting for a book like this. As an Occupational Therapist, I get to see a glimpse of people's lives while recovering from tragedy and thrive following it. It makes me believe that I have the coolest job ever! This book was magical. It had all the right feels and struggles. All the right words... "But hope is tricky. She sneaks up on you even in unpredictable locations." " 'Everyone has their s*** to shovel, Callahan. Everybody'. He gave my hand a squeeze, and then took his back, 'Now, yours is right up front where everybody can see it. I don't envy you that. But everybody has some, whether you can see it or not.' ""Suddenly, living my new life seemed more important than mourning my old one."I can't wait to continue in this series and start stalking all books by Sarina. One of the best books that I have read.

Bought this as a Christmas gift. No way it can be given to cat lover friend. Poor quality overall, pages too repetitive, feel like it's the same picture over and over and in some instances it is! If you're more into small spaces to color than cats you might be OK with this but as a cat/animal person I far prefer Dover/Creative Haven coloring books. Also bought Jade's Elephant book which is better in my opinion. And have her Greyscale Flower book which is the best of the 3 to me.

The cover doesn't really reflect the pictures inside. I was expecting more Kick@$$ Cats than what I found in the book. There are some cute cat pictures, but I wouldn't really call them kick@$$. There's also a lot of duplicates in here. The paper quality is very poor. It feels like regular copier paper and you can see that the black side is printed. Definitely wouldn't recommend using water colors or water based markers as they will destroy the paper.

they are exactly what is says they are kickass cats. So excited to start coloring them. Non-soak through pages comes with a code in back to get a pdf file of all the pictures so you can keep coloring them all in different ways. "Thank you for such a great coloring book. I have even ordered more through Etsy.

Enjoyed the well designed cat pictures with their personalities. I've personally met cats that have these attitudes. I'm anticipating many hours of stress relief coloring with pencils and pens. There are many pleasant surprises on these pages.

Nice book! Multiple copies of the same picture so if you mess up you can try again. Book also comes with a free digital copy which is nice. Pages arent perforated so you have to cut them out, but they come out easily with sides of sissors or an exacto knife. I think the lines of the pictures aren’t quite dark enough, they’re gray instead of black, so you have to color over them if you want them to look dark.Overall great pictures but could be better

Girl at the children's home I work at loves this book so much and loves that it repeats all the images over again half way through the book. I however, wouldn't have been so happy about the repeats.

Une tres belle qualite image je passe des heure a colorier beaucoup de details et surtout beaucoup de plaisirs.

I have a lot of color books, but this is one of my favorites. The expressions on the cat's faces are great! I love this hobby. I like the heavy paper but wish it tore out easily after you were finished.

This review is only based on the book's recommendations for the Fitz Roy area. While this guide may shine for other parts of Patagonia, the advice given is not the best (understatement) regarding: a) the trail from Poincenot to Piedra del Frailes is in poor state and a dangerous river crossing requiring serious rock scrambling skills is needed around Piedras Blancas - which will make any less than hardcore trekker cry and b) the Cerro Electrico lookout access has changed and the caretaker of the Piedras del Fraile refuge clearly stated "do NOT trust the Lonely Planet guide" but instead look at the local "Chalten Trekking Map" to find the right trail to the Cerro Electrico. Also, I must say that starting the trek from De Agostini is a LOT easier than from Rio Electrico: there's only one short steep uphill section vs. miles of uphill trails the other way round. So use that guide for general ideas only but do your detailed itinerary in El Chalten using local maps and advice.

Outdated, disorganized, hard to find information and maps are unreadable. Water and ground are different shades of grey while blue is the color of national parks?

Very out of date and got us in a lot of financial trouble as almost all the free things are not any longer.

I wish it talked more about the details in surrounding towns. The book is laid out poor.

A good guide. Really hard to find and when you do it's super expensive though.

For the last year I've been planning a trip to Chile and Patagonia. This book has helped me plan and organize and decide which areas I want to see. This book has been full of helpful information about all the different treks in this region, the difficulty rating, miles, average days specific trails will take, and great maps. Not only does the book give great info about specific treks, it also gives really great information for newer backpackers, such as a checklist of what you should bring on the trek, what kind of food to bring, how to use a compass, first aid info, etc. (Though you should know these things before you trek around Patagonia.) I give this book 5 stars.

I was looking for information on all-day hikes. Guidebooks don't really address that segment of Patagonia travel. This book is exclusively for backpacking.

Cool book!

The author lists many systems with emergent properties starting with atoms and proceeding to more complex systems step by step. However, he ends with religion, which seems inappropriate. He really does not try to summarize the emergent characteristics or reach any general conclusions about systems with emergent properties. I was disappointed.

This book attempts to unravel the mind of god as Morowitz feels that "knowing the mind of god is our task as humans, our vocation". Whether it fully succeeds in that task or not, you do understand the mind of Morowitz by reading this book and marvel at his intellectual virtuosity and ability to absorb knowledge from so many disparate fields like cosmology and biology and present such a succinct synthesis of the emergence of phenomena in each of those fields. A major portion of the book consists of a discussion of twenty-eight emergences that "represent a continuous series going from the reductionist core of particle physics to the most noetic aspect of human thought".Despite such extensive coverage of scientific advances, the book manages to read somewhat like an absorbing whodunit: you are waiting till the end for Morowitz - while he maintains the suspense - to finish describing various emergences - from the Big Bang to the evolution of life-forms and the mind to ultimately answer (or attempt to answer) the question: who engineered these emergences? A question posed by theists in this context that is never easy to answer from a non-teleological perspective is "Who was the ultimate mover?" What came before then? What gives life the ability to replicate, to procreate and to grow? The sections (especially the chapters on the emergence of metabolism and cells) dealing with emergence in life forms in this book do a well-argued job of explaining these inquiries. Beware therefore if you are on the epistemic borderline between belief in a supernatural force - let alone a benevolent or omniscient god - and considering other more matter-based alternatives, as this book is wont to sow doubts in your mind and surreptitiously loosen the foundations of your beliefs.Morowitz argues that such emergence is triggered by natural features such as auto-catalysis (similar to the concept of autopoiesis - a system capable of creating itself - propounded by Chilean biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela) and endosymbiosis and the fact that matter is informatic in nature in the sense that information for change and evolution is created and is re-used in ensuing phenomena. The conclusions in this book (fresh, even startling to some) may end up pleasing neither rationalists nor believers. This does not mean that the book is either inconclusive or ends unsatisfactorily. This is apparent when one reminds oneself of the rubric that there are no pat answers to questions like what does it all mean or why is there something instead of nothing. Morowitz observes, "Eating at the tree of knowledge seems like an inevitable consequence of the development of the universe." The more you eat, the less you seem satiated, though. If at all there is a shortcoming to this book, it is this: it more or less wholly ignores Eastern thought. (Morowitz is himself conscious of this lacuna as he admits that this omission stems from his ignorance of the vast amount of thoughts "outside the one in which my education occurred".) For instance, he presents towards the end of the book a list of the greatest thinkers in history, ranging from Aristotle to Charles Darwin. Some of the very notable exclusions from this list are intellectual giants such as Confucius and the Buddha. The latter particularly was inimical in postulating a metaphysic and epistemology which dealt with existential questions without bringing a deity or supernatural being into the equation. A discussion of ideas that some of the non-Western thinkers gave the world would have contributed immensely towards a better expostulation of the latter emergences that Morowitz talks about, especially those relating to the rise of the noosphere, the mind and consciousness.

An informative read--fairly clear for the layperson (myself), with some jargon and technical spots.Successful in presenting the basic principle of 'emergence', but most of the book is spent in a long-winded struggle to further flesh out emergence and provide examples. . . . as a result I felt that I had to learn quite a bit of biology and geological history just so that they could be drawn into basic examples of emergence. (Not necessarily a bad thing, but a lot of time was spent on the outskirts just to support the theme). I know that the concept (and field) of 'emergence' is new, but I expected to learn more on the dynamics, not just see exemplification. There are a few broad assumptions and much of the author's personal bias can be seen. However, (to me) the author was redeemed when they turned away from the empirical science aspects to cite philosophers (such as Kant) and draw up major points about emergence as a bridge between worldviews of science and religion. This brings surprising balance and broadens the topic, making it more of an insightful work rather than a murky scientific textbook. This exemplifies the broadness of emergence, rather than trapping it in empirical views.

Excellent review about the theory of emergence. I do not agree with the authors conclusion on how religion or a supreme being plays a roll in such emergence. But the book is insightful.

Morowitz the scientist makes a single point, which he drives home again, and again, ceaseless, incessantly, until finally it begins to sink in. It is, in this respect, perhaps the intellectual equivalent of Ravel's Bolero, or the yogi's infinitely repeated "Om". The point is that reductivism is the only tool we have for analyzing the world, it is an amazingly powerful tool, and yet at every level of complexity, emergent phenomena arise that could not have been predicted by the levels that preceded them, and can barely, if at all, be modeled an understood using reductivist analytical and experimental techiques. This is a message that will be rejected by one particular group: the self-styled "scientific atheists" who claim that scientific methodology ineluctably implies that God does not exist, or at least that there is no more reason to believe in God than it is to believe in the Tooth Fairy. Morowitz, by contrast, follows Spinoza in identifying the world of science as dealing with the product of the "immanent God" whose transcendance we attempt to capture spiritually.Scientific atheism's error is its inability to appreciate the notion of emergence. Just as consciousness emerges from a material and chemical substrate the scinetific understanding of which tell us virtually nothing about the nature of its emergent properties, so the physical universe may give rise to an emergent spirituality that simply escapes the scientific imagination. Morovitz' interesting book makes this point extremely clearly.I believe Amazon is due major kudos for providing a forum in which readers can compare and contrast their ideas. I really enjoyed the previous nine reviews of this provocative book.

Good product, as expected.

Excellent; understandable by a retired mechanical engineer with no previous knowledge of topics such as biochemistry.
