This is Harry Bosch at his best. Relentless and methodical, he will not stop. Along the way he finds frustration, good and bad luck, heartbreak and even a little humor in his melancholy pursuit. This time is a bit more satisfying because everybody gets what they deserve. Even Harry finds some light on the very last page. I've said this before but every one of Connelly's books deserves to be a movie and Lost Light should be at the very top of the list.
Harry Bosch is not a cop anymore but he acts like one in this book. He’s retired from the LAPD and is haunted by a four year old murder case that was never solved. Having nothing better to do he reopens the case and starts a new investigation. In doing so, he runs up against FBI agents and night club owners who want him to keep his nose out of their respective businesses. Besides the unsolved murder, there is the matter of some two million dollars in cash that went missing from a movie set. This is one of the items in the story that I thought was a bit “over the top.†The movie’s director wanted to show real money in the film which caused all kinds of extra work and security measures that were eventually found to be ineffective. The other item involved an attack on Harry by a group of four suspects which took place in the darkness. No problem for Harry, thanks to his Viet Nam tunnel experience dealing with the VC. Harry also has a personal problem that vexes him: the absence of his ex-wife, Eleanor Wish, whom he misses dearly. Eleanor has been so successful playing poker in Las Vegas that she now has financial backers. He gets over to Las Vegas several times to see her and, in one touching scene, answers a question I’ve had on my mind for several years. It’s a good read and the complex plot makes you pay close attention.
I've been reading these books since the first Season of Bosch on Amazon. These are just so good. The books and the show are related, but they are different Harrys. I think I like the book version much better.It's hard to believe Harry Bosch has retired. But now he can investigate the cases he chooses. This one is a doozy. It's a cold case and it involves a bank heist, a missing FBI agent, and an anti-terrorism squad.Harry Bosch is an excellent detective and these stories are rich in detailed characters and vivid scenes. Very poignant at the end. It's okay to cry.
I accidentally discovered Michael Connelly's books a couple of months ago. Then I began watching the series Bosch on Amazon and I was hooked. Detective Bosch isn't a lovable Columbo-type ruffled detective. He is driven, tough, and he has had his share of tough times in his life. But underneath that exterior is a man searching for the truth and bringing justice all crime victims want. I am currently reading Echo Park and, like the dozen or so novels left, am enjoying every minute of my reading pleasure. I am also awaiting tonight's Series Three premiere.
There are so many times in this novel when it seems that Harry will not be able to solve this case from the past because of pressure from the LAPD, the FBI, former colleagues, and just about any other powers that operate in Los Angeles. Harry is retired in this one, and it is written in First Person, so we are in Harry's mind throughout. Some of the characters were introduced in earlier novels, as well as some of Harry's former colleagues. All of them add to the excitement and suspense right up to the last three chapters where the case is solved, and Harry goes back to Las Vegas unannounced to see his ex-wife, Eleanor, and get the surprise of his life. The plot twists are everywhere, and Harry has one of the most dangerous fights of his life with the perps in this case. It is one of the best of the Bosch series!
This was another Harry Bosch book. It's such a good story; twists and turns right up to the finish. It's good to read the books in sequence so you can follow Harry's life in the LA police department and in the cases that he works after retirement. With every book, I like him more; he's such a good human being, but a pit bull on a murder case until he solves it, and he solves every one of them, taking you along for the ride.Connelly is such a good writer; he knows LA well as he describes the streets and freeways Bosch travels in his quest to solve a crime. He also gives you an insider's look at the politics of the LA police department and their relationship with the FBI and Homeland Security. I have read almost all of the books now and this is a very good one.

I work in the film industry. And, yes, I've seen first-hand the kind of discrimination against woman that Mallory O'Meara reveals in "The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Milicent Patrick."Women are slighted, overlooked, under valued and under compensated every day and not just in the film industry. Even today this kind of discrimination is rampant in many industries, so Mallory O'Meara does well to devote her book to this issue. The book is even more of a spotlight because O'Meara highlights the work and career of Milicent Patrick. Patrick was a wonderfully creative makeup artist, special effects designer and animator. She was the first female animator at Walt Disney Studios and the creator of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. And she was totally disregarded, never received the credit due to her and has largely been forgotten by history.My problem with the book is that the subject material is much too close to O'Meara. This causes rage and anger to infect her writing. She has every reason to feel strongly as she has been victimized in many of the same ways as the subject of her book. However, a writer needs a degree of detachment to effectively deal with a subject--especially one as fragrant as the treatment of Patrick and, yes, even O'Meara herself. This turns the book into a more of a vendetta than a exposure of a wrong that continues to be done.Hollywood is laden with discrimination. As an older actor, I see it every day. It needs exposed, it needs refuted and it needs to be corrected. I'm just not sure that "The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Milicent Patrick" will accomplish that noble purpose.
In the 1950s, a young artist and background performer of various film roles designed what is easily the most visually arresting of the Universal horror movie monsters. Employed in the special effects shop at Universal Studios, Milicent Patrick created the Gill Man for the 1954 film, Creature from the Black Lagoon. While her creation would become one of the most recognizable and iconic movie monsters in cinema, Patrick would unfortunately become lost to history as her supervisor’s jealousy, rampant sexism in the film industry, and a total lack of proper crediting of filmmaker’s roles in 1950s, all worked together to obscure and all but eliminate her legacy.Thankfully, film producer, author, Milicent Patrick fan, and Creature from the Black Lagoon obsessive, Mallory O’Meara has stepped in to unearth Patrick’s forgotten history and set the record straight with her wonderful The Lady from the Black Lagoon. Given the unfortunate state of obscurity Patrick fell into, O’Meara certainly had her work cut out for her. Luckily, she’s a dogged investigator and was able to piece together Patrick’s puzzling history through a whole lot of archival research, industry contacts, and interviews. Over the course of her writing, O’Meara notes the various confluences that have randomly, surprisingly, and unknowingly linked her to Patrick over the course of her life. There’s a certain sense of destiny at work in these moments that are quite charming and really make you root for O’Meara’s efforts to uncover and reveal Milicent’s buried history.The Lady from the Black Lagoon is meticulously assembled and presents a candid and honest representation of O’Meara’s personal hero without being slavish or overly fannish. And make no mistake, O’Meara is most certainly a fan, one who even sports a tattoo on her arm of Patrick and the Creature. She is wholly devoted, though, to teaching us about Patrick’s life, warts and all. I knew hardly anything at all about Milicent Patrick going into this book, but it’s safe to say I’m certainly a fan now, too.Patrick is a vitally important figure in film history, and not just because of what she’s created, but what she could represent for future generations of women in the arts. Patrick is the first and only woman to have ever designed an iconic movie monster. Think about that. In almost 65 years of cinema, there has not been another notable creature designed by a woman. And over those same 65 years, men and history have sought to completely eliminate Patrick’s role in designing the Creature, giving sole credit to her manager, Bud Westmore, who ran the special effects shop at which she was employed.Throughout the course of The Lady from the Black Lagoon, O’Meara writes with firey passion at the injustices perpetrated upon Milicent Patrick. She’s angry, and rightfully so. Hell, I’m mad right now just thinking about all the various issues raised over the course of this book’s 300-plus pages. And if you have any kind of a conscious or sense of fairness, this book will justifiably tick you off, too.While uncovering the history of Patrick’s legacy is clearly a passion project for O’Meara, The Lady’s focus is not limited solely to the special effects artist. O’Meara’s research places Patrick within the context of her time, but the author smartly compares those issues of 1950s sexism and male domination over Hollywood to the present day, within the scope of the #MeToo era. It’s sad and disgusting just how little has changed in six decades, and how fully sexist, male elitism still thrives within Tinseltown. O’Meara doesn’t bother hiding her anger and these injustices, and more power to her. She, too, has been objectified countless times, as has every other woman working in Hollywood. At one point she relates a personal story of, as a producer for Dark Dunes Productions, having cast a male actor to voice a character for one of their films. Upon meeting O’Meara and seeing her green-dyed hair, he immediately volunteers to help dye her pubic hair. Incidents like these are not rare in Hollywood, and O’Meara reports that every single woman she knows in the film industry has many, many, many stories like hers.The toxic environment that defined the 1950s era of filmmaking is alive and well in present day, and 65 years later, O’Meara has found far too many similarities between her own experiences and those that utterly destroyed Patrick’s career. As O’Meara writes in her introduction, “It’s not just her story. It’s mine, too.†Sadly, it’s the story of every woman in Hollywood then and now, present-day, right now, right this minute. The jealous claims to fame that Bud Westmore latched on to and used to ruin Patrick’s career and her future in special effects are hardly a thing of the past. In 2017 and 2018 we saw, first-hand, women finally speaking out, publicly and openly, about the sexist state of their industry, the decades of abuse they’ve had to endure from repulsive figures like Harvey Weinstein. It’s a serious issue that demands exploration and rectification, as well a reclamation for the histories of women that were ruined solely to appease or protect powerful men.How many other women have played vital roles behind the scenes in Hollywood, only to have their contributions covered up or credited to their male counterparts? How many women around the world have been denied representation, denied even the idea that they, too, could create horror icons or work in the special effects industry? The fact that all of the most well-known special effects artists are men “didn’t seem strange to me,†O’Meara writes. “It was status quo. … I had never seen myself reflected in the world of horror filmmaking. The possibility of it never crossed my mind.†When she began writing The Lady from the Black Lagoon in 2016, 96% of that year’s films were directed by men, only a four percent difference from the 100% of male directed films of 1954 when Creature from the Black Lagoon was released. “It’s harder for women to get into Hollywood than it is for us to get to space,†she writes, nothing that sixty women have been to space between 1983 to now, but that only one woman, Kathryn Bigelow, has ever won an Oscar for Best Director in 2010. Their roles in front of the camera are little better, with the vast majority of speaking roles going to men, with the film leads being men, with the action heroes being men, with the monsters being men, and the artists creating the monsters being men. Characters like Ellen Ripley and Buffy Summers are not the norm; they are outliers and few and far between at that. When women are able to break through the male domination of Hollywood, they are routinely questioned on how they landed any given job, with the automatic assumption being that they slept with their boss rather than worked hard and were actually talented. No, even then, the automatic default for a woman in Hollywood is to be reduced to nothing more than a sex object. It’s repulsive and infuriating.The Lady from the Black Lagoon is a necessary read and a vital contribution to our society’s (sadly) on-going discussion on issues of representation and equality. It’s a much deserved biography of an important, and overlooked, woman and her contributions, but it’s also a hell of a lot more than just an accounting of Milicent Patrick’s history. O’Meara takes note of the historical injustices that beset Patrick and explicitly shows us how little we’ve progressed societally and with women in film, and by tackling these issues of rampant sexism in cinema, she’s raised the bar in terms of awareness and combating these issues with her outspokenness. Speaking as a man, if there are any male readers out there bemoaning all this, my only advice to you is to simply shut the hell up and listen, because you should be learning from these women and their experiences and working hard at being better.[Note: I received an advance copy of this title from the publisher via NetGalley.]
I give O'Meara a lot of credit for tackling this subject. It's clear from the details of her search that finding good, correct information about Millicent Patrick was not easy. O'Meara has collected a tremendous amount of evidence for her biography, and her portrait of Patrick is vibrant and enjoyable.Having spent a lot of time reading academically, I was initially put off by the conversational tone and glib notes that O'Meara peppers throughout her writing. However, after considering that the target audience for the book is probably horror hobbyists, those who are far removed from the classic horror she's writing about and encounter it only as artifacts of the past - I think it may be merited. It certainly makes it easy to read. It's not a dry and highly annotated scholarly work and does not set itself out as such.There's also a potent combination of O'Meara's own experiences with the older content. Including modern instances of discrimination, unpleasant or unprofessional behavior and harassment was a bold choice given how often such claims are minimized and dismissed by people who have a vested interest in continuing the status quo. The examples serve to make the harassment and objectification that Patrick experienced feel more fresh and relevant, so ultimately I think they do more good than harm.Over all this was an enjoyable ride. What it lacked - and it desperately needs - is photos. I'm not sure whether they will be included in the final release of the book but I hope that they will. I had to read with my phone in hand. Thankfully Patrick has become somewhat of a cause célèbre over the last year or two, and many blogs and articles cite her work on the Creature and other projects, including photos of her at work, or the famous press tour photos of her posing with props.

I have read a few of the mainstream books on design thinking. Without exception I've found them to portray a shallow rearrangement of common sense and common techniques as a revolution of sorts. This is the first book I've found that invites the reader to transform their basic concept of imagining, developing and launching a new product. It's ironic that the author states in the forward that when he was asked to create a book on design thinking, his first question was "Hasn't that already been done?" Thomas Lockwood has succeeded in doing for innovative thinkers what the authors of all the other books failed at: He provides a cogent thought-scape that allows products to exceed the baseless fairy tale beginnings in the imaginations of innovators, and to disrupt and transform their target markets, even blossoming in markets not yet imagined when the spark of their existence came to life in the minds of their creators.The book provides a living landscape for innovators. It's up to us to understand and respect the tenets set forth on the book, and leverage them in our attempts to make the world a better place. Because we're working with a living landscape, we should also dedicate ourselves to nurturing and enhancing the concepts presented, and to mentoring others in their use.
I liked the book but the fact it is a collection of articles by several authors is good and bad. It is good because allows the reader to get in touch with different points of view. And it is bad because articles vary in quality and relevance. all in all, i recommend it to all who want to better understand how design evolved and gained relevance in the business world.
This was written in 1997...was hoping for a newer version or more current up date of this business trend.

After reading many other books that touch on the design thinking concept; here is a book that provides a wealth of in depth information that examines design thinking from a number of perspectives. In my company we need to be both attune to our client's approach to design and integrating ourselves into their process while maintaining our own design disciplines internally. This book provides insights to these sorts of design challenges as well as more traditional ones such as building a design thinking process and the culture of design in a company. Great information and interesting to read as well. Very much enjoyed it.

This book was a really fun read. I enjoyed the characters and watching Prince Nikolai and new Princess Shelby fall in love. It was very enjoyable to read and I learned a lot from is one a spiritual level as well. I was very glad for the review that pushed my into purchasing the book as I had come across it years ago only to be deterred by a reviewer who claimed that it had explicit content which it very well does not. I'm sad for having missed this treasure years ago, but am glad to have found it now. There is an implication that sex happened between the married couple but it does not describe it. I would recommend for ages fifteen and up just because it talks about the couple deciding if or when they should consummate the marriage. It was a very enjoyable read and I'm glad that this was my first Lori Wick read, and believe it to be worth the time to read it. Personally, I bought it while on discount and don't know that I would have paid the full fourteen dollars, but if you're looking for a good sweet book about faith and love between Christ centered royals, in a marriage of convenience no less, this is definitely the book for you. Four and a half stars.
I know that Lori Wick's characters are often too perfect and innocent. And her writing style is a bit simplistic. But I just loved this story. I pictured the setting as something like the United States. In fact, while listening to this book, I couldn't help but to think that perhaps this was United States as a Kingdom. I found it quite interesting. Lori Wick never really did tell us the setting of this small country.I liked both characters and enjoyed watching them fall in love. I thought it was just a sweet, feel-good story and it kept my interest.Another thing I like about Lori Wick's book is that she's not afraid to write about intimacy, but she does it in a way where the bedroom door is firmly closed after letting us know where things were going. Sex is something beautiful in her books. Something only for marriage. Very sweet.
Lori Wick is an amazing writer. This was one of the first romance books I read when I was younger. After all these years, I still am moved by how strong Nick is to love again. I love reading about how selfless Red is and her willingness to let God lead her. Marrying someone for honor despite their love for another woman takes a special type of person. This is one of my favorite novels.
I have read and reread this book so many times over the years. I still love it. The story is about an arranged marriage in a royal family. There is much to laugh about and much to bring on the tears. But most of all it demonstrates the love of God. Enjoy the read.
I first picked up this book when I was 12 years old, young enough to still believe in the fantasty that Prince William would come to Canada and fall in love with a 'commoner'. I read this book in one night and I would read it often because it was a modern day fairytale that I couldn't resist. However, once I hit 15 or so, this book was set aside and I forgot about it for many years until I recently ordered it for my Kindle and all those old feelings came sweeping back. I was afraid I wouldn't enjoy it now because I considered it a child's book, but it was still a good read. I appreciate the characters more now than I did when I was younger. They're both incredibly flawed but you're still wanting to root for them and see them come together. The Christianity aspect of this book shines through more now to me than it did as a kid, but when you're reading Lori Wick, it's what you expect. Her novels will never leave you doubting on her faith. The writing itself is perhaps a little amateur-ish, but it's charming enough that you still get caught up in the read and forget about it. For those looking for a good fairytale, this is it!
I have read this book at least five times. It's my favorite book by Lori Wick and one of my favorite books overall. The characters are fantastic, have a lot of depth and also have a lot of personality. I really like how Ms. Wick weaves the story together, creating a tale that is fast paced yet filled with a lot of detail.If you have not read any of Lori Wick's books before, this is the perfect choice and will no doubt lead you to reading other titles from this talented author.
Kept me entertained and wanted to keep reading. Am now interested to read more of her books. Definitely recommend to any reader.
Soomeone compared this book to a Hallmark movie and I couldn't agree more. An exceptionally wonderful story that you can lose yourself in and find yourself smiling at blossoming love. I also enjoy Lori's addition of their silent prayers and addition of scripture. It helps put passages and circumstances into perspective in my own life. This book is a beautiful spin on princess fairytales. Instead of instant love, it shows that marriage can take work and that sometimes love is a choice.

Great story, lovely illustrations
I think adults may appreciate this one more than the children will. I've attempted to read it to my younger sisters (ages 4 and 6) and they're just not into it. It's a beautifully illustrated book with an interesting and tragic story, and you might want to save it for those a little older.

There wasn't much to the story, the art work is nice but not compelling. Still overall it was good. Amazon shipped in an envelope instead of hard packaging to it arrived slightly damaged. It got donated to the library book sale.

Cute! I like that is has some pages where you can add your own designs and/or elaborate on the picture. My niece loves to draw, so this is perfect because it gives her some room to be be creative. The only weird thing I thought was that each page has a quote with a small design on the back, so if you color with markers or gel pens, you wouldn't be able to color both sides.
I'm very big on adult coloring books to help me relax and ease some of my stress and I happen to also love desserts so when I found this coloring book, I was super excited. I haven't been coloring as much as I used to and it was awesome to get back into with such adorable (and delicious looking) pictures. I wish I could eat them! I've used it just about every day since it has arrived. One of my favorite coloring books and believe me, I have a LOT of different ones to choose from
This book is a little heavy. It has a lot more pages than I expected. I was impressed with the pages to color. This is a gift, but I considering buying myself one. It even has a couple of pages already colored for suggestions. Nice.
What a super "sweet" coloring book! Pictures are easy enough for younger children wanting to color but are outgrowing the childish coloring books. Also, pictures are fun and playful that adults will enjoy them, too...at least this one will for sure! Many examples of completed pictures are provided to give the artist a starting point if needed. Well designed and printed one picture to a page. Backs of pictures are blank so they can be used for framing if desired.Whoever receives this book will be delighted!!Paid full price for these books as no discount was offered. Have purchased so many coloring books at full price, it'd be a pleasure to have one offered as a sample for review.
Coloring is my number one hobby. I have bought a number of different kind of adult coloring books until I bought a design original. Now I buy Design Original books if I can. The pictures are easy to color and I love the positive sayings. I would recommend this particular book to anyone.
This coloring book is super cute, and very fun! The coloring pages are not too easy, but not as hard as adult coloring pages. This was a great purchase, and we would definitely recommend this product!
