Having read hundreds of books on World War II, it's pretty rare to come across a book which covers a topic I'm not very familiar with. However, the subject of the Holocaust is one which I've avoided mostly because it's just too damn depressing, and while this book covers a broader topic it's probably one I would have skipped in the past. I'm glad I didn't skip this one.The author defines the Bloodlands as the lands between pre-war Nazi Germany and the western edge of the Russian Republic, predominantly Poland, Belarus, the Baltic States and Ukraine. I was unaware this book would not focus on the military action(s) and instead focus on the ordinary citizens in these areas as I had not read any reviews prior to starting this book. I have to say, this is one of the best books I've read in quite some time, and the fact it covers a subject I've avoided has opened my mind to wanting to learn more.The author recounts how first Stalin and then Hitler undertook various programs/campaigns against the Polish, Belorussian, Ukrainian and Baltic populaces, as well as against those of the Jewish faith. In a combined campaign of extermination, over 14 million people were killed essentially because of where they lived, what religion they practiced, or if for some reason they were viewed as a threat. Along the way, author Snyder does a really good job of explaining the rationale behind the murderous schemes of Stalin and Hitler and how they fit into the grand plans/ideals of the Nazis and the Soviet Union. Along the way, the reader will encounter multiple personal vignettes about those who there, many of whom did not survive. The story is truly horrifying and the sheer numbers staggering, yet Snyder has woven together an excellent narrative which doesn't get bogged down in either horror or numbers. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more the events in the Bloodlands from the late 1920's through the early 1950's--it truly is an excellent read.
“Without history, the memories become private, which today means national; and the numbers become public, which is to say an instrument in the international competition for martyrdom.â€One such number is 33,761. That is the number of Jews shot at Babi Yar, near Kiev, in the Ukraine. On numerous occasions throughout this monumental and essential history, Timothy Snyder uses very precise figures such as 33,761. Admittedly, it rubbed me the wrong way, since in the world of much uncertainty, as Heisenberg and others have proclaimed, it is impossible to know such a number, with that type of certainty and precision. But on the very last page of his account, the author, a Yale historian, explained fully why it is so important to use the “odd†number. It is the humanity that is revealed in the “1â€, which can be multiplied by a million or more. It is the fragments of the stories of individuals who once had a real name, that have been preserved in diaries, or the memories of others, or simply a departing sentence scratched on a wall.Snyder does also use “round†numbers, as in 14,000,000. That is his estimate of the number of CIVILIAN deaths in an area he defines as the “Bloodlands,†between 1933 and 1945. It is an area that stretches from St. Petersburg in the north, encompasses the entire eastern shore of the Baltic to Danzig, all of Poland, and on, down to the entire Crimea, and touching the Don River in the east. One of the many strengths of this book is the numerous excellent maps set within the narrative. His contributions to our understanding of what happened in that space and time are numerous. Central is his examination of the disparate motives behind these numerous deaths, and to present a “balanced†account, in a world of madness. Snyder starts in the Ukraine, with Stalin’s efforts to collectivize agriculture, which lead to the death, by starvation, of millions. Many others were deported to the “Gulag.†Next there was the “Terror,†in the late ‘30’s, in which Stalin purged many in the leadership ranks of the Soviet Union, with a particular focus on the Poles. In fact, the “Polish Military Organization†was simply invented for the purpose of justifying the terror. Though the Soviet Union promoted an image of their tolerance towards minorities, which many in the West, probably at one time including myself, accepted, with the “you can make an omelet without breaking a few eggs†rationalization, Snyder concludes otherwise, to a stark degree. Next there was the brief period that Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union were allies, which, in part, resulted in the partition of Poland between them, and the calculated decimation of the Polish leadership.What more can be said about the Holocaust and the Jews? Actually, quite a lot, I found. Once again, Snyder condemns best in measured, factual analysis. He deals with the “big picture,†and demonstrates how, after the German failure to take Moscow in 1941, that the destruction of European Jewry became a wartime German objective. He names numerous concentration camps I had never heard of, because they were taken by the Red Army. Prior to reading Snyder’s account I was under the impression that the gas chambers had to be constructed because there was some natural “limit†whereby soldiers could not be ordered to shoot and kill unarmed men, woman and children, and be expected to obey. The soldiers themselves would simply rebel and refuse to participate in these heinous crimes. Not so, apparently, as the author documents how so very many were simply shot, including all those at Babi Yar.Amos Oz, the Israeli novelist once proclaimed that “the dead of the Six Day War belong to all of us; the dead of the Lebanese War belong only to their mother’s.†Snyder posits a similar issue concerning a Soviet Ukrainian Jew who had once lived in an area considered to be Poland. She can be claimed by four different national entities; who does she belong to? And to what political purpose today will these entities use her death? And like Bernard Schlick’s principle character in The Reader, who is accused of war crimes, but asks the Judge: “What would you have done?†and receives no reply, Snyder cautions against assuming the identity of the victim, and raises the issue of what people who are just “trying to get by†will do in order to stay alive… including being Jewish policeman in the ghetto.My first efforts to obtain a different vantage point on the Second World War, other than the one I was brought up on, as an American, that is, Pearl Harbor and D-Day, was reading Alexander Werth’s Russia at War: 1941-1945, in the ‘60’s. William Shirer proclaimed it to be “the best book we probably shall ever have in English on Russia at war.†I found it strange therefore that in Snyder’s extensive 37 page bibliography, it is never mentioned. Of course, some of Werth’s information and opinions, as set forth in 1964, are outdated and have been superseded. For example, Werth had left it an open question as to who killed the Polish officers in the Katyn Forest, the Soviets or the Nazis. We now know for certain it was the former, and Snyder details this.I also compared accounts concerning the doomed Warsaw uprising of 1944. I found Snyder’s account less rigorous, with the implicit assumption that the Russians had simply stopped, for no particular reason, and allowed the Poles to be slaughter as a result. Werth seemed to be much more explicit and detailed, clearly condemning “…the awkward questions of the Moscow radio appeals at the end of July to the people of Warsaw to ‘rise’… and the Russian refusal to let supply planes from the West land on Soviet airfields.†Also, it was clearly in Stalin’s interest to allow the Polish elites again to be decimated. Nonetheless, Werth quotes the German general, Heinz Guderian on the inability of the Russians to take Warsaw, cites the failure to cross the Vistula in July, with a loss of 30 Russian tanks, and Werth concludes: “The only conclusion this author, at any rate, has been able to reach is that in August and September, 1944, the available Red Army forces in Poland were genuinely not able to capture Warsaw, which Hitler was determined to hold.†At a minimum, I think Snyder should have at least addressed this issue, and Werth’s knowledge of the matter.Despite the above one flaw, I consider this an essential historical work. 6-stars.
Perhaps it is because I am in my 90th year, but I cannot believe many Americans have any idea how gigantic was the slaughter of innocent men, women, and children (yes, even babies) under the Stalin and Hitler regimes. This book tells all, with gory details galore. I have visited several of the Nazi death camps. Nevertheless I had no idea (until I read this book) how awful was the carnage between 1920 and 1945 in Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Germany, and other places.

I must admit the candor in ths authors book is refreshing. Erik doesn't claim to be perfect, in fact, he is still fighting to keep his house. So what can you learn from this book that you can't learn from Dave Ramsey's? Instead of building vast amounts of conspicuous consumptive wealth, Erik Wecks advises us to use our money to make statements about our values. If you are tired of keeping up with the Joneses, and you dont need a Beemer, Louis Vuitton wallet or a Burberry trench coat, think about how and where your money can serve you best. Erik does credit Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University for opening his family's eyes to zero balance budgeting, calling it "sexy!" But, this book is not a repeat of Ramsey's books. Inside you will learn how banks con us into debt, with home equity HELOCs and high interest credit cards, and how to simply say, I'm tired of this, I can think for myself, and just say no. Say no to staggering interest rates and pay off your cards. This book was right on target about how we as a nation have contributed to our economy. It's not just the banks and the government, people, it's us, too! I just bought a beautiful house, paid cash , i am mortgage free and I applaud the plan in Erik's book, as it worked for me, and it can for you, too! Say no to status consumerism and say yes to really owning what you love and buy. Bravo, Erik! I'd give this six stars if I could influence all debtors to read it.
So far I've read several books about personal finance and they seemed to focus more on getting rich, as if thats everyone's primary goal. Erik's book spent a lot of time dealing with how to survive the day to day life of being in a bad financial situation, and I could really relate to that. If I end up rich later in life great, but right now I need to get my finances in order and this book helped with that. I've already recommended it to some friends, and I certainly think it worth the time and money.
Like a lot of Americans in their late 50s, I took a deep pay cut after I was downsized from my job of 20+ years and finally got another job. I’m talking making about 50% less than I did at my old job. (On the other hand, the old job was at a poorly managed toxic place that would have eventually killed me, and the new job is at a positive, stable, fun, well managed organization I want to work for forever.) My new employer offered a Dave Ramsey course, and I signed up but didn’t get much further than Baby Step 3. The Ramsey course turned me off—it felt hyper religious and a little embarrassing at times, like being yelled at by your 6th grade phys ed teacher for not being able to run 600 yards. Weck borrows Ramsey’s solid principles and makes them palatable. Finally I feel as if I have a way out of my crushing credit card debt. His writing is engaging and encouraging and a little self deprecatingly humble, and never, ever dull. This is without a doubt the best, most practical financial planning book I’ve ever read. Even if you make $350k plus a year, you would profit by following his principles. And most amazingly of all, Weck makes reading this information a pleasure, not a chore. Thanks, Erik!
This might not work for others, but I found this book to be EXACTLY what I need to start getting my spending under control. I recently retired and am living with reduced circumstances. I have been finding it far too easy to keep spending money as if I still had it. This book provides a way of doing a personal budget that actually makes sense to me. I can have enough flexibility to have the things I really want when I cut out the things that don't really matter. It provides a way of looking at the things I automatically spend money on to try to see if there are better ways of getting what I want. I can do things in ways other than the way I have done them always that provide as much as or more pleasure with much less cost. For example--instead of asking friends out to lunch, I have repainted old lawn furniture and have started having friends over for coffee. It's much more enjoyable and better fits a reduced income.I particularly like the example of a dentist and his assistant who had very disparate incomes, but showed how the assistant actually was living better than her boss. That really made me think about the times in my life that I had a big income but wasn't living very well. I was making many of the same mistakes that the dentist was. Where was this great little book then? Would I have paid any attention to it then?The focus is not on doing a budget once and disparing when it doesn't work. A budget is a work in progress and provides a fresh look every month with a fresh look at expectations.I am grateful for this realistic way at looking at handling money. It is not a complete book of personal finance, saving and investing. It is just a look at how to handle what one has when that isn't all that much.

The book is funny and down to earth, making it a much easier read than many others on this topic. It is easy to understand and follow his principles and they are applicable to those with some debt and financial problems as well as those who are barely making it financially. He gives a lot of basic advice and really works hard to make consumers understand how debt and credit cards are not always your friend, despite how easy they are to use. Wecks also does a great job in clarifying needs and wants- something all of this in Western culture can use to review every now and again. I definitely found myself asking- 'Do I really NEED....' in thinking over my own finances and budget. Overall, a good book to help you get a handle on your finances and budgeting from a basic perspective.

we have yet to arrive in namibia; we ordered the bradt guide after reading numerous reviews of travellers in order to prepare for our trip. this will be our first trip to africa, and it's turned out to be quite difficult to plan and to understand just what is going on, what needs to be reserved in advance, what things really cost, and where we'll be happy going/staying. after our first thorough reading of the guide (as well as reading online forums) we were able to make our decisions about accommodation and vehicles, and now we're reading it again to plan the content of the days themselves! we were happy that so many reviewers recommended this guide since we have travelled with a bradt guide in albania and it was wonderfully helpful. i feel that only with a guide book can i get a real overview of a destination's travel potential and compare destinations within a country, something that online travel sites and forums provide only piecemeal - they're too specific for someone who as yet hasn't a clue.
I have bought earlier Guides in this series on Namibia ; Editions 2, 3, and now the 4th.Each is better than the one before with updated information. Edition # 4 is now my "bible" for Namibia. I rely on these guides completely and after FIVE trips thereI have yet to get a "bum steer" from these Bradt guides by Chris McIntyre.I recommend the guide highly for anyone traveling to Namibia
Bradt Namibia and Botswana were two of the best, most informative, incredibly useful guidebooks I've ever had to any country. On a self-drive, self-planned safari, the two of us alternating reading its chapters, sometimes out loud to each other, that were not just of great practical value, but also on the behavior and habitat of wild animals, as well as safety information for humans around them.
Africa needs to be "experienced" as well as read about, & this book helps you do it even before arrival...Have been to Africa 3X and have used various guide books. This is one of the best--great maps, well-organized, excellent color pictures. Good whether you are going on an organized tour (which we are doibng to Namibia) or doing it on your own (have done this 3 other times). Per all reports and pics, Namibia is a fantastic & underappreciated part of this continent.
Seems to be a good guide book providing up-to-date information on the country and getting around in the country. Will know more when we actually travel to Namibia.

Good material - waxy, hard to rip, waterproof (all good to have in Brazil)\ but also difficult to write on. Like any map, not extremely intuitive to re-fold once its open. Very clear with street names and landmarks, however, which came in very handy when using buses and cabs driven by Portuguese-only speaking natives.
The map was in Portuguese. I just went back and read the description (which is in English) and it never mentioned it. I'm sure someone from Rio who bought this map would love it.
Having a big awkward folded paper map is not convenient to use on a street corner, but OK to peruse back in my room. I was staying in a remote area of the city (Barra Beach), so it was helpful to have this street map that covers a majority of the metropolitan area. The laminated city maps, while more convenient to use, didn't extend past downtown and the more popular beaches.
Good quality map. Could be folded repeatedly without tearing.
What a crappy map, doesn't show where all the Olympic venues are in city. Shows maybe a 1/3 of city. Useless, wish I wouldn't of purchased.

I'm a huge fan of good home cooking. I enjoy church and auxiliary (etc.) cookbooks because they offer a snapshot of what people like to make and eat at home. People tend to submit their favorite recipes, making for a good book. That is exactly what you get here. This book is a must for home cooking enthusiasts. The recipes are solid. So far I've made Sweet Takuan, Tofu Squares, Mochiko Chicken and Fish balls in Sweet and Sour. I did reduce the salt slightly but other than that these recipes were spot on for me.This book is a little quirky at times. For example there is a tofu recipe that uses cream of mushroom soup. While that is unusual for me personally, it makes sense. Food fad recipes that swept the mainland like cocktail franks and using cream of mushroom soup in casseroles for example, make an appearance but with often with an island twist. For example there is an eggplant parmesan recipe that uses fish. There is a strong midwestern USA influence that makes many of the recipes fun and more accessible. This book is as fun to read as cook from. And not every recipe is "exotic". There are many old favorites like taco casserole and apple crisp.There are a few ingredients in this book that will be hard to find. As an Asian food enthusiast, I routinely hunt down ingredients at the Asian store. Being in a mid size city what I can get at my local Asian store is a bit limited though. I accept there is some stuff, like pohole, that I can't make at this time. There is no place to get salted cod or salmon near by that I know of. I can order these things online but that's not my style. There are, fortunately, PLENTY of recipes that can be made without even going to an Asian store. Also in many recipes substitutions can be made. For Sweet Takuan (a radish pickle) use regular radishes if you can't get daikon. If one type of fish is not available, use another. This is home cooking after all.At the end of the day, at my house, it's about what actually made it to the table. This is the kind of book I will cook from often. There are plenty fun and familiar dishes as well as more challenging ones. My family loves what I call Asian-ish cooking. But they also like stuff like taco casserole and apple crisp. This book's blend of standard American and Asian inspired Hawaiian American is perfect for us.
The book arrived in good condition as described. Love the recipes from the book as I am from Hawaii and many of the recipes are things that I would like to try.
This book is a treasure trove of wonderful Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Philippino, and Hawaiian recipes!!I have other books from the Maui Assoc collection but this is a compilation of the best and most popular.
The book was in near perfect condition. I have tried only one recipe so can't tell you if the recipes are great.
I bought this on a recommendation. Tons of recipes and good ideas. Most cookbooks look boring to me and are way too complicated. I like simple and easy. You can send this to people that like Hawai'i style cooking.

It was a promising idea, and I wanted t love he book. I wanted. I waited for the author to finish setting the scene and explaining the background. I waited; he explained. I waited more; he fleshed out the setting. On and on. Too many words and far too often the novice error of telling instead of showing. Yes, the explanations were placed in the mouths of the characters, but they were not organic. It just didn't work.I wanted to be taken up and swept off into the world of the Celtic Church in the seventh century. I wanted to pace the monastery cloisters and wander through knotty theological disputes and witness the clash of cultures. I waited while Tremayne minutiously set the scene and described the personalities--still telling us what they were like instead of letting them show us--and each time I thought that now, now he would let go and sit back and let the story unfold and the characters take agency over themselves.But no. I am droning on and on in this review just as a Peter Tremayne's characters explained and explained and I ended up just as bored as you are now.
This is the book review my granddaughter wrote:Absolution by Murder, the first book of Peter Tremayne’s series, is a thrilling expedition throughout the life of an Irish woman, who is both a dalaigh of the court and a Celtic nun. Strong-minded Fidelma of Munster, ventures from her home in Ireland to attend the Synod of Whitby. Just as the conference was on the verge of its beginning, one of the Irish delegates was found murdered, and due to Fidelma’s outstanding reputation, as a solver of mysteries, she is asked to investigate the murder. Not only is she asked to investigate the homicide, but she must carry out this task alongside Eadulf: a monk who happens to be not only a Saxon, but also on the side of the Roman church.Tremayne’s novel intertwines various subplots within the broad storyline; such as religious diversities, political conflicts, and relational development between the characters. I would definitely recommend this book to others; particularly if you enjoy intriguing, “whodunit†mysteries! I must be honest, one difficulty I had reading the book was pronouncing the ancient Saxon and Irish names. There was such an abundance of archaic names, that at times, it seemed Tremayne left no name unmentioned. While most modern murder mysteries are fictional, Absolution by Murder introduces a different take by bringing Celtic history to life. Tremayne, a scholastic Irish historian, merges both Irish and English history of the seventh century in an exceptional way. I came to the revelation that while the rest of the world was in a period called the Dark Ages, Ireland was in an age of “Enlightenment†(also called the Golden Age).Even though Absolution by Murder is written more for entertainment, I was pleasantly surprised to be impacted by several deep aspects within the story, particularly within the relationships of the characters. It seemed, that although the majority of the conversation between Fidelma and her partner, Eadulf, was simply shallow discourse, there were a few instances where it resonated in a profound way for me.One such statement that was quite thought-provoking, yet slightly humorous, was when Fidelma honestly states, “If we remember that we are all born mad…then many of the mysteries of the world are explained.†For me, it’s instances like these, amidst the anticipation of the culprit being revealed, that captivated my attention. This fast-moving plot, chock-full of suspenseful twist and turns will keep you on your toes until the very end!
Sister Fidelma is an Irish in religious order attending a synod about tonsures and the date of Easter that could rip apart a kingdom. When her abbess of the Irish faction is found murdered, the king asked her to investigate along with a Roman aligned monk. The pair sift through various plots and personalities finding each other along the way. Rich in historical detail of a period I knew little about, the authentic names are a bit of a mouthful at first and hard to keep straight, but soon the story takes over.
This is a decent enough mystery, and the characters are mostly well-drawn, though I have to admit that I like my heroines a little less perfect. Fidelma appears to be good at everything, and the fact that she occasionally misses something before solving the mystery doesn't really change that. Still, she is engaging enough. I'm also a little skeptical of the old "gather them all in the drawing room to announce the killer" idea which is usually done here. But the characters and plots are interesting enough that I've continued to read the series.The historical background isn't bad either, but the image of Ireland in this period is pretty embroidered! The author (under his real name, Ellis) is generally known for wanting to present the Irish past in the best possible light. While it's true that early Christian Ireland had much to recommend it, it wasn't exactly the perfect society. Yes, the position of women was better than in many places in the ancient world, but no one in modern western society would have thought it a feminist paradise! Just to name a few things, yes, women had rights to divorce husbands and were entitled to property they brought to the marriage. They also had a few minimal rights to land and income under certain circumstances. However, a girl's honor price at age 14 was half her father's until she married, when it became half her husband's, so women were clearly not considered of equal value to men. Women were under the legal care of a male from birth to death, and were not usually allowed to buy and sell goods or land or make contracts without permission from their (male) superiors. Most women (along with "idiots" and outsiders) were not allowed to bear witness in legal cases. And while any form of sex (including rape) without a woman's consent was subject to fine, the fine was paid to her guardian, not to the women herself. There were slaves in Ireland, and the word "cumal", in this series translated in terms of cows, actually refers to the value of a female slave (which has an value equivalent in cows). Also, what we know about early Irish law codes comes from written versions of the law, which were of course idealized, as with any law code. Everyone knows examples under our own system where the law is routinely ignored. So inferring what society was like from written law codes is problematic at best.So overall, enjoy the reasonably well-crafted mysteries and characters, but read this with a somewhat skeptical eye towards the image of ancient Ireland. For a highly readable book that is much better at describing the actual position of women in this society, I suggest Lisa Bitel's "Land of Women: Tales of Sex and Gender from Early Ireland."

Absolute loved this book. Yes I also purchased this as a result of the referencing in BTS's Wings album, (which I love to death) but this book is not just good simply because of that. It genuinely portrays the human experience of growing up so accurately, at least the human experience I've personally experienced, and it also talks about processing and acting upon what you feel in a way that's really opened up my mind. It made me relive moments of my life when I saw them happening in the life of the main character, Emil Sinclair. Demian himself feels like such a familiar presence, and his mothers character feels like someone I've always wanted to meet. I can really relate to the amount of overthinking about connectedness and metaphors for the problems that Emil faces, and how he expresses those things. Anyway, as a review I read said, you'll either love it or hate it I think. And it's really a modestly sized book, I almost wish there was more but I think it ended appropriately. I made myself only read a chapter a day so I could truly take in what was said, otherwise I might've read it in a day or two. In conclusion: one of the most memorable books I've read in ages.
I ordered this book a few months ago, because of BTS and I am so glad I did, because it is an amazing book. The book isn't too long, so even those who aren't big fans of reading are able to do so. However, there are some big words within the book that you may have to Google the definition of. The book is relatively cheap, so it's a good buy. The story line of this book keeps you wondering and keeps you wanting to read more.The book takes place in Germany, around the first half of the 1900s. The story follows a boy named Sinclair who starts off as a smart, innocent little kid, and it basically follows him throughout his life. It includes him falling into temptation and falling away from tranquility and sameness. It begins as he is caught in a lie, that's where his life kind of flips upside down.If you listen to BTS, you will notice a lot of little references within the book that correspond to the WINGS short films. This makes the book that much more interesting because you try to connect each chapter and its details with the little things that some may overlook in the WINGS videos. It's also easier to understand the fan theories if you read this book.If you have never listened to BTS or don't know who that is, this is still a good book for you. It keeps you guessing. I'm usually the person who can figure out the ending of a book/movie before it ends; Not this book. This is one of those books that gets you thinking about yourself and about life. So I would 10/10 recommend you to read this book.
Far from the spare prose of Siddartha, Hesse suffuses this novel with the lush, overripe, prose of late-Romanticism. It is a journal of self-discovery that speaks to the angst of growing up of a young man. As a schoolboy, Emil Sinclair is led astray by a school bully and becomes distant from his family. A slightly older youth, Max Demian, takes him under his wing and starts him on his journey of self-awareness. Demian is a mysterious character who proves to be an ongoing influence throughout Sinclair’s life. As a teen, he meets the organist Pistorious, a nonconformist, who reinforces the merits of individuality. As Sinclair confronts the duality of a masculine/feminine persona, he remains celibate throughout, though there is a strong strain of homoeroticism that surrounds him. Ultimately, under the influence of Demian and his mother, Sinclair understands the supremacy of the inner self. The novel ends with both young the start of WWI, “it will be a big war, a war on a gigantic scale. The new world has begun, and the new world will be terrible for those clinging to the old.â€
I got it because I'm BTS trash but omg it's kind of a slow read, it took me all day just to read one chapter, it is interesting though.
This has become my new favorite book. It is one of the most relatable things I have ever read and had me saying "same" on every page. It perfectly captures the struggle of growing up and finding yourself. It is beautiful and inspiring.For those wondering why so many of the reviews mention "BTS," it is because they are a group who released music videos/songs inspired by Demian, which influenced many of the fans to read the book. I'm so happy to have read it. It is such a wonderful journey.
Rating this bildungsroman was challenging, but I settled on 4-stars as it is a tour de force of whimsical edgy (and disturbing?) buildungsroman that is far more "out there" than JD Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. It's in a different league. By "out there," I mean there is a lot of symbolism or suggestion about mental stability/health in this book that may annoy some readers because it gets a little too clever for its own good sometimes--especially the whole internal psychology part, which is the who-is-he-really? question. It's interesting, though it's extremely heavy-handed, in my opinion. Another reader may very much prefer the heavy-handed psychological approach in this genre, and that is important for why this book is at least worthy of 4 stars. If you like psychological thrillers of the internal mind in a bildungsroman that pre-dates the psychological thriller genre, then this book is recommended.Two of the many intriguing lines (and among the best sections) in the book are on pages 72 and 84.I am still not sure what is happening in parts of the story, but it makes the reader think, and that is perhaps what Hesse intended.
