If you want to see wild Alaska, don't skip over Southcentral just because you see cars and tall buildings in Anchorage. The hikes detailed in this book start on or near the road system. But you're far more likely to see moose, bear, dall sheep, and other wildlife on these trails than in the remote bush. Some of the trails are crowded (by Alaska standards--perhaps six hikers per mile) in the sunny season, but others see very little traffic. And, even on the most crowded trails such as McHugh and Bird Ridge, you escape most other hikers after about a thousand feet. By the time you work your way into the high valleys, you're usually the only one up there. The views are astounding, and the weather far, far nicer than SE or SW Alaska. Worth a look, even if you're only in Anchorage for a few days.
First, I should say that "for hikes in the vicinity of Anchorage" is a little misleading. Southcentral Alaska includes thousands of square miles worth of gorgeous trails and hikeable terrain, and this book is probably the best one to help you get out there. It includes maps for all hikes, as well as vital statistics like distance, estimated hiking time (take with a grain of salt!), total elevation gain, and seasons that it's open. I cannot even begin to tell you how or why this book speaks to my heart like it does. It just does. The life, the journey--spiritual, religious, and otherwise--is one to which everyone and no one can relate. Yet, she comes so finally to a place of some understanding and therefore peace. But not really peace. Isn't that life though? We jump around in a state of unrest and rest only to find ourselves in unrest once again. Read it. My soul needed it.
An extraordinary book. Armstrong takes an unflinching look at her personal and spiritual development from her entry and departure from a convent, a doctoral candidate at the British University, her modest success as an educator, to her gradual emergence as a highly successful author. It is a personal story of self discovery It is a story familiar to anyone who has experienced a spiritual crisis and emerged with a fuller understanding of the universality of the religious experience and a faith that is not handed down, but discovered. Strongly recommended.
I am enjoying reading this book. Though I am not a nun, personally I have spent most of my life studying and researching religions in the quest of understanding and to know what "It's/God/ Spirit" is all about. I don't share Karen Armstrongs strong negative feelings, obvious her experience was rather traumatic one. What I have concluded in my personal quest is that "God/Spirit" is unknowable in human terms, He/It is the source of All there is, so our so-call searching for God is like the dog who continously chase his tail thinking his tail is a different being apart from himself. God is us, we are Gods as rabbi Jesus of Nazarette said. All we need is to stand still and quiet our endless mind chatter and listen, truly learn to listen.
An intensely personal and candid account of Karen Armstrong's journey and transformation into one of the world's preeminent authors on theology. Armstrong takes us through a brief discussion of her childhood and time as a Catholic nun, but largely focuses the book on her unintended spiritual quest. Experiencing many of the classic challenges espoused by Campbell in the Hero With a Thousand Faces, Armstrong first has her faith destroyed, her health fail, her career derailed and her self-worth reduced to smithereens, before embarking on an unintended journey as a theological author that also brought her to a uniquely spiritual awakening.Armstrong's candor, compassion and vulnerability are evident throughout the book. Once you finish reading it, you feel like you know the author intimately - and you do - because she allows herself to be open and vulnerable for the reader. There are times when you feel sympathy, others when you feel empathy, but you always feel the vulnerability and the humanity.The book itself is a great read - I would classify it as nearly a page-turner. It is like watching a train wreck, but knowing that Armstrong is a preeminent author, it is also inspiring and awe provoking. In essence, the reader will find it hard to believe that Armstrong could become the woman she is given her experience - and yet it is that very experience and the humanity of it that makes the book an inspiration.
This is a remarkably personal and insightful journey which takes us through the loss of hope and faith and then back to a higher realm of love and understanding. Here are my personal thoughts about this book:1. By the end of the book, I felt a bond with her that is similar to something I have felt for some of my best professors and teachers who helped me understand complex things. Karen is extremely honest and open and able to describe emotions and reactions which many thoughtful people must have to orthodox religious training and dogma. She works so hard to do the right thing and yet she is unable to feel the connection to God and make the decision to accept things as they are. She is the opposite of the normal rebellious person who bolts. She is the long suffering special person who will follow the rules, sacrifice and do the right things over and over again to come up with the expected result of obedience and conformity. And yet, that brilliant and analytical mind of hers cannot allow herself to be tricked or cajoled into compliance. I feel that this is because she is brutally honest and pure.2. She lets us into her very private and sometimes sad life. We know her every fear and understand that she is shy, awkward socially, and backward, and as she heals and moves to the next level of understanding in her life, we root for her and admire the things she is trying to do. Her accomplishments are huge and she has done it virtually all alone with extreme patience and many setbacks as well as thousands of days carefully studying the history of religion, various poets and other important writers. The ultra close relationship we have with her every day struggles helps us comprehend her conclusions and remarks about spirituality, religion and life. She has taken the time to do what many of us would like to do but can't do because of other more pressing obligations and, perhaps, addiction to regular shallow life things.3. She is imprisoned by her unknown health problems, her religious obligations, fear and shyness, and yet we see her determination get her to a level of freedom experienced by very few people. She loses her faith, gains a cause to help others understand how religion at a certain level can be damaging, and as she reads and studies each of the three major religions, she gradually moves back to a spiritual understanding that gives her a new freedom and love of everyone. Along the way, she teaches us some of the basics about each of the religions and why we need to understand them before we assume that all others are incorrect and horrible. This gives us hope and makes us want to reexamine and study others and then move to that higher level that is taught by all of them. Certainly, it makes me want to study more about Judaism and the prophet Mohammed's teaching.I finished the book with a great and positive feeling that there may be hope in the world if we could take the time to truly understand each other. This book is less a "history of the FBI" than it is a history of J. Edgar Hoover via the Bureau's extra-legal black bag jobs, wire taps, and domestic surveillance of left-wing groups and American citizens. What's left out or glossed over is striking, and ultimately disappointing.The first 2/3 of "Enemies" details the rise of J. Edgar Hoover, but only in broad strokes of his most galling manipulations. The final third talks about the Bureau's attempts at reformation and reckoning with its history of secret intelligence following Hoover's death. Hoover's obsession with Communism is covered at length, as are his relationships with Presidents and Attorneys General who encouraged his (and the FBI's) collection of secret files on Americans. The FBI's role in installing a friendly-to-America government in the Dominican Republic gets some attention. Hoover's clashes with Robert Kennedy are discussed. But the Osage murders are never mentioned. Neither is the FBI's work fighting John Dillinger and organized crime. Japanese internment camps are never mentioned. When one of Hoover's successors is shocked to learn of what agents before him have done in the FBI's name, it dawned on me as a reader: so what ELSE was the FBI doing all those years? What did they THINK they were doing? Surely, if the Bureau had a large staff of agents who were unaware of COINTELPRO etc... what were all the FBO agents who weren't J. Edgar Hoover busy doing? There must be a large part of the FBI's story that's not being told in this book.As for what's glossed over, it's a jarring part of Weiner's writing. He spends significant time describing Hoover's clashes with Bobby Kennedy, but then John Kennedy's assassination is mentioned quickly in passing as the narrative moves on to LBJ. Tension rises as Nixon and his staff inch toward the inevitable, but then Nixon's resignation happens off-screen as well, as an off-hand detail within a paragraph about Carter. How events like these affect contemporary FBI agents is barely mentioned, other than as they relate to Hoover's narrative. True, there are plenty of other books that talk about these events in detail, but this is billed as a history of the Bureau... so as a reader, I got the feeling that perhaps some pages were torn from my copy. Even Hoover's obsession with Communists is hardly analyzed. The contradiction of Hoover's life-long motivation to preserve his idea of America while doggedly and knowingly breaking the law is not explored. His single-minded pursuit of Communists once other threats were more pressing is mentioned, but never explained or discussed. I wanted Wiener to pause from his narrative and make some sense of it. A history of the FBI that's so focused on this one aspect of its history never really lets me understand Hoover's perspective; instead, the author continually registers shock by the Bureau's blatant hypocrisy and the institutional silence that let it continue. And then he moves on.The ultimate effect of this book on me was that I enjoyed reading it, but periodically returned to Amazon to find other books about the FBI that would flesh out aspects of the story. Long as the book is, it's still too short and strangely narrow in scope.
I purchased this book because I was very interested in the FBI given the election issues involving Director Comey. The book has not disappointed. It is very informative and I have learned a lot. If you are interested in the history of the FBI you will enjoy reading this book. I found that understanding the history of the FBI really gave me more perspective in understanding the current situation.
A real world story about the FBI, where it came from, the man who developed it, the struggles between government officials and the director of the FBI, and its power. Reading it makes you wonder if anything has changed concerning our enemies (terrorist groups) and why America myst always be on guard,The book clearly shows that power can easily corrupt a moral and ethical person. Greed is usually the heart of the matter. This book should be required reading in high school.
The seamy side of the FBI, especially under Hoover. Truman had to deal with them right after he took office and he feared they would turn into a Gestapo (that's the word he used). He found that Hoover was tapping lots of DC politicians for political rather than legal reasons. Of course being published in 2013 it does not have the most recent shenanigans involving the Russia investigations, but this book demonstrates that the agency has always had some questionable practices. Reading this might turn you into a Libertarian, so be careful (haha)

They are having all these articles about Elvis and prescription drug abuse, so thought I would read Priscilla's account of their story and relationship. Very interesting and I think she was honest...but now a lot more time has passed since she wrote that book, and some of his "Mafia" members wrote books, and former girlfriends like Linda Thompson, who I also think was an honest truthful person, so the final consensus seems to be he didn't believe he was a drug addict because his drugs were prescribed...so much has changed in 40 years and today he could have been helped...but of course, he would be 83 even if he had lived a clean life. Sadly it changed his personality which a lot of those drugs do and Priscilla left when his life style became too much for her. I fully understand her dilemma....living with a group of men and never having any "alone time" with your husband, him always gone and leading the bachelor's life when away from home....I don't blame her a bit and for some reason he didn't understand the meaning of "marriage"...Seems like Lisa is doing okay now that she's nearly 50, 4 beautiful children. Elvis would have been proud.
I enjoyed reading this book, it is a love story of 2 people who really love each but fame and temptations took over. I really think Elvis and Pricilla would have found their way back to each other. Doesn't matter what other people think Pricilla is still keeping Elvis's memories alive.
Another awesome book about Elvis and Priscilla. I've seen the movie. This story told by Priscilla Presley. Any book written about Elvis, by Priscilla, is a purchase for me. Loved the movie and this book!
I’m usually not much of a reader but I couldn’t take my eyes off this book. I would wake up read it for an hour, then before bed I would read it for a few more hours. I read this book in 3 days and was very sad when it was over. It is great look into what Elvis’ life was like. Elvis is often painted out to be a villain and a less than fun person to be around but Priscilla addresses all of his issues but also talks about his intentions and how loving he was. I recommend!
I enjoyed reading this and because I read it I recently visited Graceland for the first time. The only thing I didn't like was that a stock photo is used in the picture of the book. It DID state in the description that the jacket cover was not included but I missed it the first round. I just think if you're selling something it should be the actual item as you'll get it.
I really enjoyed this book and have been a huge Elvis fan and still am. I have read several different books about him and always find them very interesting. His life was so tragic but this book went back to the times they met in Germany and continued on from there and it was one of those books that you can't put down. Whether you are an Elvis fan or not this is a very good book.
Love the book. It did not come in good condition though. It was worn out and it wasn't the edition mentioned in the description.

While my old deck has over a decade of energy and love put into it, the clarity of the new cards is wonderful, and they're visually easier to interpret simply because you can see everything so much better!This is not a deck that will spoonfeed you meaning, nor will it coddle you, but that shouldn't put off new readers from working with it. Indeed, I would consider it an unparalleled choice. It's a remarkably powerful tool that will help develop your intuition like no other and deliver a hefty dose of reality about your situation, spirit, and mind whether you're ready for it or not.
