The Cranberry Oatmeal cookies on page 14 contain golden raisins, dark chocolate chips -- but, no cranberries.When the items in the title are not ingredients included in the recipe, how can you trust the rest of it to be correct?
I have purchased several of Emma Katie's recipe books in the past several years and have found each one to be both full of delicious recipes and well-written. This one was no different and it came out at a perfect time with the holidays fast approaching. I am always looking for new cookie recipes to try for Christmas treats and there are so many that fit the bill here. We've already made the Snickerdoodle Bars and Lemon Rosemary cookies. Delicious! Each recipe is well-explained and I think that it could take me years to get through this one. Definitely recommend.
This was a gift for my wife for Christmas. She loves making cookies and has more cookie recipes than she knows what do to with. The only complaint that she had is that she wished there were photos to each of the recipes.
I think just about every cookie recipe I would want to make is in this book. Great reference to have handy for holiday baking or any other time. Nothing fancy, just a great collection of cookie recipes. There is not a lot of "how to" and no photos so some knowledge of baking is probably best to get the most out of this collection.

This baking book price is good. But.....There are no pictures in the entire book except on the cover. Also, on the second recipe in the book for Pecan Cocoa Cookies, there are no directions for the vanilla extract. It is listed on the ingredients list, but it is not in the directions. So, I baked the cookies with out the vanilla extract....Yuck!!
I love all the recipes, but I have not baked any yet. They look easy and delicious!

This was the first novel written by Starhawk; however, I strongly encourage you to FIRST real her prequel to this: Walking to Mercury. That book sets up the characters and story line for this. However, The Fifth Sacred Thing stands on its own if you have not or choose not to read the other. This book is amazing in that it was written over 20 years ago in 1993. At that time, it was viewed almost as a work of science fiction because of the outlandish premise that corporations would rule the world, genetic testing would evolve into human breeding, and water would become so scarce that wars would be fought over it. However, today, this novel is right at the point of totally becoming true.I warn sensitive readers that in the second half of the book, the graphic details of how humans are treated at the hands of the corporate 1%ers is so awful that you will have trouble sleeping, not because it is so awful, but because it is so current and not just possible be already being done in our world right now. It would only take a little push by the super wealthy for our world to totally devolve into the story Starhawk presents here in The Fifth Sacred Thing.You will have to read to see how it all ends, and how our current world may soon be. Then, dive right into her third novel - just published - The City of Refuge - where the same characters and story line continues.But I can say, that even though I have finished reading The Fifth Sacred Thing, I still get nightmares, especially after hearing a news item....
I am an old Hippie of sorts and also have Native American roots that make me lean toward a Nature Loving Path of Spirituality, So this book fits into much of what I understand of the real world. But the criticism I have on this book is it tries way too hard to incorporate all of the NEW AGE ever imagined, into one story - and a post-apocalypse adventure story at that,A really fun book to read, hummm,,, for some people. BUT be aware it has a naivety that will make many readers put it down, to never return,My recommendation? Put on your tie-dyed garb, drink a bit of sweet wine, perhaps indulge in some other mild recreational adult pleasure, and go back to 1960's thinking. It's us against the establishment again. Contradiction? All this is set in the future, after unknowns have dropped the bomb in California. I also read it as an exercise to show the classic culture clash that exists today, between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
A local friend suggested I read "The Fifth Sacred Thing," so that some of us could form a book discussion group about the ideas and vision of this novel. Although it took me awhile to get into the characters, I quickly saw why my friend has read this book three times and counting. It's filled with permaculture principles, magick, natural healing, and the tension between totalitarian dystopia and a power-from-within ecotopia based upon respect, not control.I found Starhawk's text incredibly prophetic, even when I thought it was written in 2005. My admiration tripled when I noticed a publication date of 1993! In 2013, as we face nuclear and toxic poisoning of the Pacific Ocean, a no longer hidden Police State, genetic manipulation, a transhumanist agenda, biological warfare, and increasingly intense weather events -both natural and human-aggravated -- the setting of this novel in 2048 feels rather optimistic.Once I managed to get a handle on the characters, I found the book difficult to put down. As the narrative continued, I realized that the initial ambiguities and confusion about gender, age and physical markers, actually contribute to and underscore the tale. As readers, we quickly find ourselves overwhelmed in and by a post-collapse world, unsure exactly which collapse triggered which events, but gradually recognizing the effects of long-term trauma and difficult life. Things the 20th and early 21st centuries took for granted have not been available for at least a generation, and the ripple effects of such deprivations reach much further than minor or anticipated inconvenience.At the same time, we find that some things in this future society function much more harmoniously than in our current one. In the absence of cars, trucks and planes, this culture has compensated for its isolation by cultivating the individual gifts of each member of the community -- art, music, healing, science, cooking, dreaming and psychic defense. Everyone gardens and participates in seasonal rituals, and the society bases itself around the premise that the Four Sacred Things (fire, water, air, earth) are so sacred that they cannot be privately owned. "May you never hunger; may you never thirst" is a phrase used in real-life pagan gatherings, but in "The Fifth Sacred Thing," this concept forms the basis of an entire political system! No one goes hungry, and no one goes without water.As the plot rolls on, we see just how innovative and special this city's solutions are. Contrast via epic journeys to the Southlands shows us that -- despite the obvious challenges up North in 2048 -- things could be (and are) much worse elsewhere. The characters face horrific trials that force them to question not only their own morals and philosophies, but also the very essence of what it means to be human. Readers with rigid ideas about sexuality, self-defense, magick, religion, medicine, technology, and the occult will likely find themselves extremely challenged as they journey with the characters. Author Starhawk practices the Reclaiming Tradition, which combines one's spirituality with non-violent political activism. Throughout her novel, we witness the effectiveness of non-violent resistance, as well as its limitations. The characters' reactions and struggles force us to evaluate our own fixed ideals, hypocrisy, privilege and irresponsibility. We see on every level how each small action affects the whole of Creation, often in dramatic and unforeseen ways.I particularly enjoyed all the manifested visualizations, herbal and energetic healing, as well as the key roles played by bees and crystals. You cannot engage "The Fifth Sacred Thing" and remain unchanged.

Starhawk is a modern day prophet and her ideas for how we can live in harmony with the planet and each other are the best out there. This is one of my favorite stories of hope and redemption in a not too distant, and not too unbelievable post apocalyptic future. It's classic good against evil; good being a group people who've banded together in love and equity, and using various wiccan and pagan powers, have carved out a life that is gentle on the earth. Bad is a group of power hungary with guns and monopoly on drugs, especially drugs everyone has to take to stay alive. It's a long novel, that works for me, but maybe not everyone. Starhawk is an important neopagan and ecofeminist leader, so it's always good to read what she writes.
This is a book I’ve read many times, and always return to when I need to be regrounded. Just as in the book the people of the Southlands need to hear Madrone’s stories of the North so they can begin to believe that change is possible and that there are other more just and inclusive ways to build a society, so too do we need to be reminded that our current path toward ruining the environment and continuing to enrich the 1% is not the only possibility. Starhawk’s books help us to envision the change so we can be the change.

You might find it useful as a way to begin studying Spanish on your own, though for me, that would be impossible. I bought it to refresh my very old high school Spanish for a trip to Spain and found it less useful than 15-Minute Spanish for that purpose, partly because 15-Minute has more traveller-oriented vocabulary and partly because it teaches Castillian pronunciation and LL uses Latin-American. (I learned Castillian 'way back when.)That is not to criticize the product as much as Amazon. It's something that should be somewhere in the product description. Not the only time I have found a description to be incomplete.
Very impressive. All inclusive & immersive!!!
At nearly 62, it is hard to teach yourself another language, but this course has helped me enough to be able to at least communicate on the most basic level . It takes much longer to get things to stick in my head at my age, but you can repeat the CD's as much as is needed and hear how the words are pronounced. It's very helpful!
Helpful for learning Spanish
You really must use the book and do the lessons from the book as the CD can be confusing. I had to constantly rewind the CD to get the lessons "sink in". I used this as a companion to the Spanish class I took this past autumn. Honestly, all the instructor did was follow the book page by page. I should've just canned going to class and studied from the book and CD. This course focuses on learning your numbers, easy phrases, how to break down the family tree, etc. If you've never tried Spanish before this is most definitely for beginners...very basic Spanish and not for those who already have a basic understanding of the language. I would've given more stars, but I guess you get what you pay for.

Though I usually place various cautions or warnings at the end of my reviews, in this case I think it is only fair to the reader to be forthright from the beginning. “Deliverance Mary Fields, First African American Woman Star Route Mail Carrier in the United States†by Miante Metcalf McConnell is a monumental work. Indeed, my Kindle (which presumably knows my reading speed) indicated at the beginning that the estimated reading time would be 13 hours and 48 minutes. To stay with this intricate and intimate historical biography requires genuine interest and commitment. Another concern is that the author uses absolutely authentic terminology corresponding to the disrespectful – indeed absolutely insulting – language used by most people of European ancestry in frontier Montana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to reference people of African American and Native American heritage. In addition, the author’s descriptions of the cruelty and abuse of Indian children perpetrated during the attempts to “civilize†them – while absolutely accurate – are not comfortable reading. Finally, she is brutally honest about the graft, dishonesty and hypocrisy of the "Christian" males in power, up to and including a Catholic bishop.These things being said, the depiction of the life of Mary Fields is gripping and fascinating, and when towards the end the story involves the women’s and children's rights causes to which she was committed, it becomes intensely relevant and enthralling. In addition, McConnell’s descriptions of the hardships and challenges of life in Montana at the turn of the century, her fine touch with characterization, and her flowing prose are definitely enough to launch this story to the level of genuine literature. It is the type of book that I will return to from time to time despite its length simply for the joy and refreshment it offers.
Actually this should be a 3.5 rating. The story line was good for the most part. There were a few things that really bothered me. First, I was shocked when the girl who had been raped and needed a solution to her problem had Mary Fields suggest abortion. In the 19th century abortion was extremely dangerous and primitive. Mary Fields had been greatly influenced by nuns and had the mother superior as a very close friend. Abortion just didn't seem like something a person of her background would present as a solution. Also, mentioning that Mary appreciated the music she was hearing and "God Bless America" was mentioned. The book ended in1914 and Irvin Berlin wrote the song in 1918. It wasn't well known until Kate Smith made it famous in WWII. Things like this caused me to question the validity of the research. The book was longer than it needed to be, but it was still good.
As a person who almost exclusively reads history books, I found this work of historical fiction to be very engaging. I have read Montana history for many years, and the Birdtail Butte holds particular fascination for me. As a native of Great Falls, Montana, the geography of this book is very familiar; the Cascade, Fort Shaw, Great Falls, and Helena areas are etched into my DNA. I have read multiple publications about Mary Fields, so I wanted to read this book, too.It took me a while to get into the initial, rather flowery, literary style that was unfamiliar to my historical reading background. But, once I got into the characters and stories, I enjoyed it very much. I began to appreciate the author's ability to create and develop characters and stories around an historical figure.Throughout the book, I wondered how much was history and how much was story. When I completed the book and read the bibliography, I was pleased to see many historical records of which I am familiar, even some I have in my own collection.I noted a few botanical faux pas in the book. It referred to tamarack trees in the Cascade/Birdtail area. Tamarack (Western Larch) trees are not native to eastern Montana but are common in western Montana. Some of the references to wildflowers also seemed incorrect regarding blooming season. Small matters!Thank you to the author for guiding me through this very interesting exploration of Montana's history, geography, and spirit. I look forward to a possible side-trip to Cascade to find Mary's grave site. I understand Mother Amadeus is buried at the St. Ignatius Mission cemetery - another visit I plan to make. And, since I now live near Columbia Falls, MT, perhaps I will run into the author and have a chance to chat with her about this wonderful book.
10-Star book...being an avid reader, has I have read MANY genres of books, I can say that this book rocked me to the core....overwhelmed by the character, intelligence, independence and tenacity of Mary Fields (white crow), I am thankful for such an upright, uplifted life of this woman. Being FIRST in any area involves much sacrifices and lots of hard work. Self-worth and self-respect can't be bought, for they are ingrained in one's self. I thank GOD for her personal relationship with Him that allowed her to have a true heart, overlooking so much prejudice and unfairness she experienced, she persevered. Hidden No More from our Black History and our American History, we salute you our HEROINE....of righteousness. Thank GOD for uncovering this Valuable gem. To GOD be the glory for making this happen. I’m returning this book, I was looking for a book about nutrition and the first section I opened it up to gave me immediate anxiety as it pointed out the higher likelihood of miscarriage for women over the age of 35. Sorry, I didn’t come here to remind myself the risks of older women being pregnant, I wanted good nutrition advice. It also discusses all the other things that can go wrong, such as GDM and blood pressure disorders. How about I worry about all that if it happens and deal with it with my doctor. I don’t need to stress over what could go wrong. And the recipes were mostly useless. Sorry, I’m not going to consider a smoothie with decaffeinated coffee, as the process for removing caffeine is wrought with chemicals I wouldn’t put in my not pregnant self, let alone subject my baby to. How about I just limit caffeine intake. Anyway, if that’s additional info you’re looking for, maybe you won’t be disappointed. But if all you want is a book on nutrition, this one does not deliver. Too much other stuff to sift through that could increase your anxiety unnecessarily.

Liz Ward has done a fantastic job breaking down nutrition needs for mom and baby in this book that goes from pre-conception, to during pregnancy and after. She addresses many concerns new moms-to-be may have, including weight gain during and after pregnancy (and how to safely lose weight while nursing). She includes detailed meal plans and guidelines for what and how much you should eat at each stage of pregnancy, and has tons of delicious, quick, and simple recipes for a new mom to make. If you or someone you know is expecting, get them a copy of this book!
I have really enjoyed this second edition of Expect the Best from author and dietitian Elizabeth Ward. As a dietitian myself, I have used it not only as a resource to further my own knowledge in prenatal nutrition, but also as a trusted resource for my clients to refer to after they leave my office. The information is written in an easy-to-understand format that makes it approachable, especially for first-time mothers.
