I am a couple years into a PhD in bioinformatics, but this is the book I started with. I knew some biology and some computer science, but I still found a lot of the databases, etc. confusing and the field has a decided lack of simplified documentation (though it is getting better).Of course, bioinformatics is a pretty broad topic and no book could possibly cover everything.If you do not know any biology at all you probably should also get a basic text on genetics/molecular biology (or read thema at the NCBI web site books section for free). You don't need anything in depth to read the dummies book, just at the level of an introductory biology book. Hint: DNA to RNA, RNA to Protein. And you want to know why proteins are similar because proteins with similar amino acid sequences often have similar chemical properties and therefore similar functions, so if you know what one protein does you can guess what a protein like it probably does.:-)And despite the name of the book the authors are REAL bioinformaticists (T-Coffee rocks!)
I like this product. It helped me refresh for my oral comprehensives when my committee asked me about the bioinformatics component of my research. Language is very down-to-earth. This would make a good book for high school students or even freshman-level bioinformatic courses. Very basic...like a "Cliff's Notes" version of bioinformatics, but still a good resource for "dummies" like me that need things explained on a basic level.
The book is from 2007 and it is outdated in the sense that the webpages shown in the book is too different from what you receive from the websites today in 2014. If you are a novice (and you are if you buy this book) there are so many new concepts and and acronyms, that you cannot find what you are looking for, when the layout of the actual webpages has been changed considerably.
The content of the book is fine, it is an easy to read beginners introduction to the basic tools of the trade. However, the content is already hopelessly out of date. All online resources referenced in the book have had SIGNIFICANT modifications to their user interface, making the screenshots and detailed step-by-step instructions more confusing than helpful. Not sure there is a practical way around that difficulty. With a bit of understanding how these databases work and what you are actually trying to do you can figure it out.
There is a lot of the book related to giving you details of particular sites to go to -- to perform various tasks. And there is details on exactly the screens you will see how you should fill them out. I found a LOT of that information to be dated and incorrect.I found the information about the basic Bioinformatics tasks to be relevant and accurate, but many of the details given were not of much use, due to the reason given above.
As a Phd student in biology, this book offers great reference for bioinformatics in a clear and smooth manner. it explains briefly the concept behind few notions and then shows you how to search, interpret the data you receive. no previous knowledge of bioinformatics is necessary to have this book. the only problem is that several websites either change/close their website or change the application format and it becomes hard to follow the book instructions. however it is a very important tool for researchers.
I bought this for a class and the guide itself is great if you want a real short introduction to things like multi-sequence alignments and navigating around NCBI but that's about all. Poor job getting any new bioinformatics person into the realm of programming (especially in Python). I suppose it's a starting point for anyone who knows nothing about the world of bioinformatics but you will definitely want to buy other guides to complement it.
Great for a quick reference. I do really like this book. The only thing I simply cannot understand is why do shipment is more expensive than the very book. I do know that costs for international shipping have to take a while, but simply I think i could bought more books rather than transportation.

Interesting Scenario. A couple of facts though. Upper air temperatures quite often get warmer (not colder) as you travel further north or south from the equator. Fuel exhaustion was mentioned often and I do not think anyone would except the tremendous amount of increased fuel burn for a few extra knots. The soviet era airport mentioned would have had to have their ILS recommissioned and one that would allow a Cat IIIA approach would take a great deal of time and money. I would venture to say that one of the three "agents" was a pilot if your scenario is correct as this would be much simpler than installing a new ILS. An "ad hoc" GPS approach could be built into the FMS in a matter of minutes. As the U.S. has military installations (Diego Garcia for example) all over along with AWAC aircraft, I do find it hard to imagine that the aircraft would not have been identified in this region. I get transponder replies all the time when out of ATC radar's range. I do think parts of your scenario have merit and would make a great movie :) We will probably never know the answers.I am a pilot (military, instructor, airline & corporate) with over 15,000 hours, flying for over 45 years and currently based in Hong Kong flying a Bombardier Global 5000 which generally flys higher and faster than the airlines. I have always been fascinated with the MH370 tragedy and often wonder what happened to the plane and its passengers. I turned to Jeff Wise for possible answers to all the questions that I have. The first part of Wise's book details the disappearance as well as how he and his fellow aviation experts and enthusiasts came to their various conclusions regarding the speed of the plane when it disappeared and the direction the plan was flying in when it disappeared. In the second half of the book Wise uses the evidence laid out in the first half of the book to explain who he thinks took MH370.I'm not an aviation expert so I can't criticize his calculations and other evidence put forward but Wise does write in a persuasive and compelling manner and his theory about what happened to MH370 does seem plausible.
What happened to This flight? I mean how can it just disappear without a trace? I found this book very interesting. Of course there isn’t a finite answer still but reading of all that went on to try to track the flight and the hypothesis on what may have happened was captivating. Will we ever know?
Quick read. Interesting theory well laid out. Wish he had worked more on coming up with possible motives. As I was reading the book it was announced that a wing portion of the plane had been found off coast of a French island in the Indian Ocean. So much for the northern flight path... or could it have been planted? ; )
I heard @Jeff Wise' s theory on National Public Radio & was immediately hooked because I've always thought that the plane probably landed somewhere because they have never found any wreckage. I hope we can figure this out definitively in the near future especially if the Russian' s Mr. Putin is more nefarious than anyone presumed so far. It's down right scary to think he could be challenging the West at such an evil level as Jeff Wise theorizes. Hopefully we'll see before this gets completely out of hand.

This book presents a fairly implausible premise but it's well presented. The author cleverly doesn't tell you his theory about MH370 until the end, and since I read the book in one sitting, I got sucked in and was fairly convinced. But later, thinking about it more, it was, like, "Huh?"Four stars for being a good read and for sucking me in. Minus one star for the "huh?" factor.
Everyone must read this book, especially aircraft and avionics engineers. This is really scary, but the case that is made here for what happened to Flight 370 is very compelling. Why more countries have not been motivated to follow up on this further is beyond me. Despite some typos throughout the book, which I have written off to Jeff Wise's eagerness to get the book published, it is well written and easy to understand by technical types or laymen.

Wayne Gretzky, nicknamed “The Great One,” is considered by many to be the greatest hockey player ever. He is the leading scorer in NHL history, and is the only NHL player to total more than two hundred points in one season—a feat he accomplished four times. At the time of his retirement in 1999, he held sixty-one separate NHL records (forty regular season, fifteen playoff, and six All-Star)—and still holds most of them today. His honors include 31 Hart, Art Ross, Conn Smythe, Lester B. Pearson, and Lady Byng trophies and awards.His teams included the Edmonton Oilers (1979–1988, including four Stanley Cups), the Los Angeles Kings (1988–1996, including a Stanley Cup final), the St. Louis Blues (1996), and the New York Rangers (1996–1999). Following his retirement, he became the ninth and final player to be ushered into the Hall of Fame with no waiting period, and the first to have his jersey number retired league-wide.Among his activities since, he has been minority owner and head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes and executive director of Canada’s 2002 gold medal-winning men’s hockey team, and is a restaurateur, winemaker, and philanthropist with his own Wayne Gretzky Foundation. This is a wonderful book because it celebrates Gretzky's love and reverence for the game by examining the 99 year history of the NHL through the eyes of its greatest player. The stories of the players that made hockey such a wonderful sport through the early years are interspersed with Gretzky's stories of how those players impacted his development as a person and as a player. As such, this book is not only a terrific work of sports history, but also a fabulous autobiography that yields compelling insights into Gretzky himself. Much like Gordie Howe's autobiography, Mr. Hockey, I was left with an overwhelming sense of just how down to earth some sports superstars can be. Rather than extolling their own virtues, these players constantly talk about Gratitude. It's all about how grateful they are to their parents, coaches, teammates and their fans. If you are sick and tired of the typical ego-maniacal professional athlete, read this book for a breath of fresh air.

I bought this the day it came out because I'm writing a book on the mental game of hockey that I can give to my clients and thought this was great timing to read this hockey book. There are 95 hockey stories in this book. 90 of them are GREAT and so vivid that you can smell the ice. 2 of the stories are ok and 3 of them suck. But thats ok because when you do the math on the price per story its still a great deal. I love how Wayne tells about his passion of hockey, discusses Gordie Howe playing different teams and games and more.If you are looking for tips. This isnt really the book for that but he does discuss how it comes down to Aggressiveness, passion and hard work of course.Hockey fans and players will love this awesome hockey book by Wayne Gretzky, " The Great One"
I absolutely loved this book - it starts with some amazing stories from the old history of hockey, most very interesting and heartwarming - it appears to me that Wayne Gretzky found a way to mention every single great old star of the game along with many current stars too. The book later goes on Into some of the stories from Gretzky's career too. All told, an absolutely great book!
I loved this book! We listen to it on CD in the car; so inspiring. We are new to hockey, but our family loves it! Gretzky is a class act. I make my son listen with me, and I'm so thankful for Gretzky's influence on him. We re-did his bedroom in a hockey theme with Greztky quotes I pulled from this book. Thank you #99ðŸ‘
Without doing proper reading about what the book was about before buying it I expected all of the stories to be about Gretzky's career. This book is about the history of hockey and all of its great players.
The book chronicles the development of hockey in North America with many personal anecdotes of individual players. It provides a rough framework of the development of the NHL. That said, Wayne is a far better hockey player than he is a writer.
I was surprised that this book ended up in many ways as a historical reference point for the sport of hockey. Pleasantly surprised. The book does cover the career of "99" but does not shy away from the long and deep history of the great sport which is hockey. Well worth your time.
I don't know much about the game and have a hard time following when I watch, but this book is a page-turner. The stories are so entertaining and I appreciate learning a bit about the game's history in between the stories. The book reads so easily and makes Gretzky comes across as a nice, down-to-earth, sensible, and humble man.
