I'd give this a 3.5/5, but it's incredibly well-known and well-reviewed already so I'll keep this one short. This is a very sweet, fairy tale inspired piece of shortish fiction set in the town of Wall and in Faerie. In Wall there is, well, a Wall that divides the regular world from Faerie and there's a gap in the wall here that is usually guarded. Rarely there is a market at the gap in the Wall with magical items and the townspeople mingle slightly with the inhabitants of Faerie and this fairy tale type story of seeking a falling star who turns out to be a girl, at least in Faerie, ensues.I'll just note that I "read" this by listening to it in audiobook form. The audio book for this, at least the version I listened to, is read by Neil Gaiman, the author of the book. He's an excellent narrator and it's nice to hear the book how the author envisioned it.
I have read several of Neil Gaiman's novels and I think I enjoy this book and Neverwhere the most.In every review I have made of his novels I comment on the amazing worlds that he is able to vividly birth with his writing. Nowhere, perhaps with American Gods as the only exception, is this more apparent than in Stardust. The fantastical creatures and events that are depicted in this book, are truly a pleasure to behold. The way the story is narrated in particular, makes the reader feel as if events are being guided by some higher power like fate, though it's obviously the author, and this lends itself greatly to the classical fantasy feel of the book. Its also interesting to note that this struck me as being one of the lighter fantasy worlds that Gaiman has crafted. I quite enjoyed this when juxtaposed to the London Underground of Neverwhere.I greatly enjoyed this book and its call back to the classic fairy tales of days past. I can't help but wish there was more.
I loved the movie so much that i bought this book and found that it is a much more adult fairy tale than the film. A lot was changed to adapt the book to the screen, but the overall tone was very similar. There was more sex and more blood and guts, but it was fun to read and I am glad I bought it.
I really liked this book. I guess I was ruined a bit for Neil Gaiman since I read The Ocean at the End of the Lane before any other of his works. I think about that story all the time. It still resonates with me months after I read it. This story feels similar to me. Tristan will be with me for a long time. I also agree with Neil Gain an on the power of fairy tales or myths or whatever you want to call them. A lot of them have been sanitized over the years from the original stories. Original issue fairy tales were much more grim to make a point.I do not like everything Neil Gaiman writes but the stories I do like are so profound and moving that they stick with me for quite a while. Stardust is one of those.
Magnificent story by author AND magnificent story teller, Neil Gaiman. I honestly have never fallen in love with a story like this until now. I am over the moon about it (so to speak), It is read by the author and that is a treat for the listening audience as he is delivering it in the way it was meant to be.I have listened to this in a car with others, and on my own now quite a few times because there is so much detail in the story-telling and it is pleasant to hear.I had seen the movie Stardust, related to this story it is, but never had a real interest in the movie because (I know now) of how it was portrayed. Although it has helped me visualize some scenes in the audio.Best ever story...well, what can I say...other than...this story I highly recommend for anyone with an interest in fantasy and faerie stories...it is ONEGOODSTORY!
After seeing the movie when it first came out and then buying it when it came out on DVD/BluRay and found out it was a book first, I had to get it. I wanted it in Hard Back as I am huge reader and have a large library and prefer to have them in Hardback form as they last longer. The book did not disappoint. The movie was excellent and the book is even better and am super happy w/ it.I have read several book by Neil Gaiman and this is by far one of the best if not the Best Novel he has ever written. Such a great story and for those romantics out there you will really love this book, as it shows that anyone can find love in even the most remote of places and really teach what love is, etc. Enjoy!
I love this book so much in fact that I own it in several different formats and have read and/or listened to it in all. I first got the audiobook, but sometimes you miss things while listening and I was curious have some things were spelled, so I got the kindle version as well. Then I wanted it on the bookshelf both for myself and in the hopes that one of my children will get curious and pull it down when the time is right. I highly recommend this book for anyone who needs a little magic and sparkle in their life.
Obviously it's difficult not to compare a book with the movie. There are some major differences, some good and some bad. The actual story is classic and unique, most certainly an excellent read. My biggest issue however is the lack of character development with our female lead and the fact that there is absolutely no chemistry between the two. It's a fairly straightforward story. Boy goes on journey, becomes a man, and of course he gets the girl in the end.

Review
"...Levine's shrewd and lively account of two centuries of Toronto history..." (Maclean's)"His book...comes packed with such stories, moments from Toronto's odd history that prove the city was weird long before Rob Ford was elected." (National Post)"...an entertaining book. Levine has made an energetic career -- I hope a successful one, he deserves it -- of popularizing Canadian history with a big reach...he writes chatty history...bringing it alive again." (Literary Review of Canada)"...a fond but not uncritical history of Canada's largest city...his handsome book...Toronto: Biography of A City reads well. It abounds with punchy portraits of the city's leading citizens: many scoundrels and a few tarnished saints. Levine is adept at linking historical events to today's news...Levine enlivens his tale with judicious helpings of sex, drugs and rock and roll...After reading it, many Canadians may agree with Levine's judgment: 'In short, Toronto is one self-absorbed fishbowl.' But it's our fishbowl." (Winnipeg Free Press)"The subtitle of Allan Levine's ambitious history of Toronto may seem stolid as the city's British founding families, but it doesn't take long for the reader to realize how carefully chosen it is. Levine, who won high praise for his 2011 biography of Mackenzie King, treats the city as he would any biographical subject: as a constantly changing personality rooted to the historical moment by a set of defining passions, idiosyncrasies, blind spots, and complex relations with family members...This approach...serves Levine well. He announces his intentions in a very witty introduction...The book includes an excellent selection of archival images and photographs that highlights key themes and personalities...The text is also enlivened by dozens of highly quotable observations, appreciations, and put-downs from the last 200 years. The insults are especially good...Love it or hate it, Toronto is a slippery city to pin down Levine's excellent biography goes a long way to explaining why." (James Grainer Quill & Quire)"Ambitious in scope and masterful in execution, Allan Levine's panoramic portrait of our city from its beginnings to the present is sweeping and opinionated, judicious and clever, insightful and gossipy all at once. This is no dry academic survey, but a lively, popular-style "biography"...Levine excels at integrating large amounts of complex information into a flowing and satisfying narrative...bristles with insight...His summation of the Ford years (ending before Ford's dramatic withdrawal from his re-election campaign for health reasons) is simply superb...Let's face it: for a writer like Levine, a mayor like Ford is a gift from heaven. And, for all of us who love Toronto, so is this book. Toronto: Biography of a City is a timely, vibrant history of our modern megacity as it comes of age." (Bill Gladstone Canadian Jewish News)"I suspect most Americans know very little about Canada other than it forms our northern border and that its hockey team is one of the most valuable franchises in the NHL. You can repair that gap in your knowledge, for example, with Allan Levine’s Toronto: Biography of a City...For anyone who is interested in the development of a dynamic city this book will prove very entertaining." (Alan Caruba)

A little better than ok.
This is a very pleasant read, as much a cultural and social history of our city as a political one. It is not that the political history is uninteresting but the other aspects are what make it a well-rounded "biography". Allan Levine has captured Toronto's zeitgeist with humour and some pathos. I am old enough to remember the Toronto of the 40s and 50s;this book brought back a lot of the memories of that weird time.
I've been living in Toronto almost 30 years and never tire of reading books about its history. This book starts us off in the early 1600s with Étienne Brûlé, who may have been the first European to explore the Toronto area in 1615. He had arrived in Quebec with Samuel de Champlain when he was about 16 as an indentured servant. The book ends with the embarrassment that is our current (but thankfully soon-to-be-ex) mayor, Rob Ford. The chapters are:* The Carrying Place* British Muddy York* The Rebellion* A City of Courage and Green* Hogtown the Good* The Ward* Toronto the Dull* Subways, Suburbia and Paesani* The Fastest-Growing City in North America* Jane's Disciples* This is Where it's at* Multiculturalism, Merger and Mel* Megacity Machinations (or Madness)The book provides a lot of information about the people and happenings over the centuries. I liked that the information was provided a high level yet there was just enough info provided. With some things, I found that I was interested enough to Google to learn more.I liked the writing style. I find that some historical books can be boring because they read like a text book ... this one didn't. Sometimes the author seemed to get gossipy about whoever he was talking about and that was fun. Some of the information was amusing. For example, back in July 1855, an American circus was in town. Some clowns got liquored up and went to a brothel. Members of the volunteer fire brigade were also there. Nasty words were exchanged and the two groups started brawling. Drunk clowns and firemen fighting ... that would have been something to see!It was appalling how racist Toronto was (I imagine most places were and unfortunately still are), especially against Jews, Blacks and Chinese. Back in the 1930s, Velma, a white woman, was dating Harry, a Chinese guy. Because of that, she was sentenced to one year in a reformatory with thieves, prostitutes and vagrants. It's a substantial book (almost 500 pages) but I didn't find it dragged. There is a section at the end of the book with a lot of pictures, plus another section with an extensive bibliography if you want to read more about a person or event.I enjoyed this book and would recommend it if you live in Toronto or if you want to learn more about our city.Blog review post: http://www.teenaintoronto.com/2014/10/book-toronto-biography-of-city-2014.html
This book is absolutely gorgeous -- a great book for your coffee table! Levine's prose is concise and engaging, and the chapters are short and readable. The book gets better with each chapter; some of the early descriptions of Toronto are a bit dry, but later chapters about modern life in the city are fascinating. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is in love with Canada's largest (dare I say greatest!?) city!

I discovered Making Work Visible when I needed it most and was most ready for it. It is a canonical book for anyone who wants to be effective at getting the right things done in the right amount of time. Why It Mattered To MeI was two months into my journey as a manager for a small technical team whose primary responsibility was to manage an overwhelmingly active queue of support requests.I was struggling with two major tensions:1. "How do I know the work we're doing is the right work for the right time?"2. "How do I ensure we're able to be effective?"I wanted to increase our internal customers' velocity and happiness by decreasing the request resolution time without increasing risk (production systems) or hours at work.I was uncertain (and lacked confidence) of how to best visualize the team's work to uncover our constraints (what Making Work Visible calls Time Thieves).Making Work Visible equipped me with tools to ask the right questions to find clarity about my tensions and overcome my lack of confidence. In the short amount of time between finishing the book and now, my team has made a number of small changes to help us expose the 5 time thieves. In the past two weeks, I've received feedback that these changes have made our internal customers feel better supported and engaged, given back our sibling teams time to spend on planned work without increasing headcount or the amount of hours my team is working (my next goal is to reduce the amount of hours we spend on this work).Key TakeawaysSetup a workflow system to do five things:The solution is to design and use a workflow system that does the following five things: Make work visible. Limit work-in-progress (WIP). Measure and manage the flow of work. Prioritize effectively (this one may be a challenge, but stay with me—I’ll show you how). Make adjustments based on learnings from feedback and metrics.Exposing The 5 Time ThievesMaking Work Visible has a number of exercises to try out with teams to expose the time thieves. The ones that resonated with me to start with were "Explore the Five Reasons Why We Take on More WIP" & "Demand Analysis".How Is Work PrioritizedThere's the way you want work to be prioritized and the way it is prioritized. Creating a label for who asks for a task, tracking whether it's planned or unplanned, and how compelled we are to get it done will enable us to determine how the work is truly prioritized. If we can be aware of how work is expected to be prioritized, we can have a deeper discussion with the person who asks for that work to help us increase visibility into the things they're going to ask for with more notice.Lean Coffee"Lean Coffee"—a meeting format created by Jim Benson:Lean Coffee turns traditional, one-direction management meetings on its head by helping teams uncover the most important topics to the majority of people, by allowing everyone to hear and to be heard, and by providing real-time feedback.I've always disliked agenda-less meetings, but the idea of a meeting that's purpose is to determine what the important topics are and talk about those topics? That's a meeting format I can get behind. I'm excited to try this style of meeting out with my team (as well as a few non-work meetings I'm a part of) to uncover what's really important and needs to be talked about and talking about those topics.Other Topics I Learned About:- 5 Time Thieves- Kanban- Flow time- Operations Reviews- Queueing TheorySome Favorite HighlightsWe allow the chaos of modern work coupled with an often paralyzing number of options at our disposal to overload us, to distract us, to stealthily steal our time and focus and ultimately impede our effectiveness. All it takes is a shift from haphazardly saying yes to everything to deliberately saying yes to only the most important thing at that time. And to do it visually.Indeed, time is sacred. Treat it as such. Visualize your work. Limit the amount of work you take on. Pay attention to its flow. Build thoughtful work systems to reflect what really matters. To breathe. To think. To learn. To grow. To play. To love. To live. For it is in working well that we can live well.Added BonusesBook recommendations abound. There were at least 4 other books that Dominica mentioned that caught my attention and are now on my list of books to read.Quotes. Every chapter starts with a quote and I found myself highlighting almost every one.Who Should Read It?If someone has asked you "how are you doing?" and you responded with, "I'm (SO,TOO,VERY) busy!" or "I'm working way too much.", read this book.If you are on a team where no one knows what anyone else is doing, read this book.If you know you could be completing (operative word) more work in less time but can't determine why you're unable to do it, read this book.If you find yourself with a million things to do and you suffer from deciding where to start, read this book. This book doesn't encourage overwork or hero mentality, rather it gives you the tools to ask, "how can I be more effective without spending an insane amount of hours working?"
In thinking about this book I'm reminded of a story Leo McGarry told on the West Wing. A guy falls into a hole. The walls are so steep he can't get out. He shouts "CAN ANYONE HELP ME GET OUT????!!!!" A doctor walks by and throws in a prescription and walks away. A priest says a prayer and walks away. Then a friend jumps in the hole with him. The guy says "Are you stupid? I just told you I can't get out of this hole!" the friend says "Yeah but I've been down here before and I know the way out!" Dominica Degrandis has been down here before and she knows the way out. Her experience isn't just as a consultant or talking head but as an actual employee at a company where lean and agile processes were implemented and a key player in that implementation. There are a ton of great Agile books out there. Jeff Sutherland's work on Scrum is fantastic as is Tobias Meyers. There's also Eric Reis and Mike Rother's books on Lean Methodology and the Toyota production method. If you are in IT I would add people like Gene Kim and Jez Humble. You should read all of these books - all of them - but not before you read Making Work Visible by Dominica Degrandis. Making work visible is the agile book we never knew we needed. It's the agile book for those of us who are reading these books because we are swimming in the soup of dysfunctional process and monolithic applications that are their own chaos monkeys. She starts with identifying the five "thieves of time" - the soul sucking, productivity evaporating problems that make life miserable. However, in addition to naming the thieves she gives several exercises where you can identify the impact of each of the time thieves in your organization. She then moves on to ways that you can continue to do battle with those time thieves and limit their impact on your organization. She concludes with several loosely connected but nevertheless important ideas around how to handle meetings, do metrics and eliminate costly and ineffective bureaucratic methods which really add no value at all.It should be said that the author of the book is a proponent of the Kanban methodology. Full disclosure, I am also a proponent of this methodology. That said, this book is pretty adaptable whatever your chosen methodology is.A suggestion to the author and (and her publisher) why not follow this up with a companion workbook? It would be a great way to give organizations a working method of processing the fantastic ideas in the book. All in all this extremely practical, extremely helpful book will go on to occupy an essential spot on the bookshelf of anyone who is trying to improve their organizations.

Lorri MacGregor "was a Jehovah's Witness for 15 years before a Christian led her to Christ. She and her husband Keith have been in fulltime ministry to Jehovah's Witnesses and other cults since 1979."In the Introduction to this 1992 book, the editors wrote, "The success of the video The Witness at Your Door DVD prompted many requests for additional written material on the subject of presenting Jesus to Jehovah's Witnesses... This book greatly expands on the information in the video, giving Christian readers the information they need to effectively present Jesus to Jehovah's Witnesses. Because the book follows the story line of the video, the reading is not heavy, but more like a novel."Here are some quotations from the book:"Jehovah's Witnesses just love counting time with willing listeners. It cuts down on the time they must spend in the more difficult door-to-door work." (Pg. 16)"(J)ust prior to the actual baptism, each candidate answers two questions. The first question is: 'On the basis of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, have you repented of your sins and dedicated yourself to Jehovah to do his will?' ... The second question ... is very revealing: 'Do you understand that your dedication and baptism identify you as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in association with God's Spirit-directed organization?'" (Pg. 22-23)"This part of the Society's activities is run like a direct sales organization, with similar methods of motivation. The Society collects money for their literature 'up front' at the Kingdom Hall, from their own people by direct charge or donation. Now Jehovah's Witnesses are expected to request donations at the doors as well and turn this money in at the Kingdom Halls. This recent practice is increasing the wealth of the Watch Tower Society dramatically." (Pg. 25)"Why has the Watch Tower Society ... willingly and knowingly been in communication with a spiritistic society (the Johannes Greber Memorial Foundation)?" (Pg. 62)The Emphatic Diaglott "which the Watch Tower prints on its own presses," was written by Benjamin Wilson, who "was a follower of John Thomas, a proven false prophet by failure of his dates, and the founder of the Christadelphians, a Christ-dishonoring cult." (Pg. 64)"So successful has this publication (THE KINGDOM INTERLINEAR TRANSLATION OF THE GREEK SCRIPTURES PRESENTING A LITERAL WORD FOR WORD TRANSLATION INTO ENGLISH UNDER THE GREEK TEXT AS SET OUT IN "THE NEW TESTAMENT" IN THE ORIGINAL GREEK - etc been in setting Jehovah's Witnesses free from the Watch Tower Society that they have taken it out of print and substituted one in which the distortions are masked much more successfully." (Pg. 69)"If one examines (Charles Taze) Russell's theology in his series of books called Studies in the Scriptures: The Divine Plan of the Ages (Studies in the Scriptures, Series I) he will notice a blatantly occult symbol adorning the covers. The winged solar disk is a symbol of ancient Egypt representing the sun god." (Pg. 111)

Although I (seriously) have more than a thousand books in my non-fiction library, I rarely write reviews. I'm not sure why - I am an English teacher living on a 40 acre farm and I have actually READ all of the books I have from cover to cover (really). However, I am making an exception for this book - I couldn't put it down. It was fantastic reading from beginning to end. Now, part of the reason I might have liked it so much (disclaimer) is because, like the author, I am also middle-aged... but I truly think the reason it resonated with me was because it is an honest telling of both the good and the frustrating times the author had trying to carve out their farmstead. If you are looking for a step by step "How To" book, this isn't the one for you (although you should still buy it and read it, because it WILL help you). If you are looking for an honest look at the types of experiences one might have while trying to establish a homestead, and how one couple went about dealing with everything, this is IT!!!! I have loaned out my copy to several neighbors already, and they loved it too. We are all hoping there is more to come from this author.
5 Acres and a Dream is a fantastic blog, one I've been reading for a couple of years now. I've always been impressed with homesteader Leigh's (and husband Dan's) measured, logical approach. When a problem presents itself, they research and come up with the best solution for them. When I first got a hint that maybe a book was in the works I was excited and also a bit curious. Would it just be another book about how to homestead? How much of Leigh and Dan would be in the book? Would it simply be a collection of posts from the blog?Alas, I had nothing to worry about. The book is outstanding!Sure, the book talks a lot about homesteading, and there are even some recipes included. The footnotes and reference section provide a wealth of further reading and information. But where the book shines best is where the author talks about their mindset and relates their thought process -- what brought them to each decision they made.I did not buy this book strictly as a "how to" manual for homesteading. Rather, I wanted to know more about Leigh and Dan's experience, more about the road that brought them here. But don't get me wrong, you could certainly do worse for homesteading information -- the book is stuffed full of hints, tips, and handy references for everything from cheesemaking to forestry. Often, Leigh includes alternatives or options for other ways to produce, grow, fix, or care for various components of the homestead. And where other books can come across as preachy or condescending, 5 Acres and a Dream: the Book has a friendly, helpful tone. The author talks about why they made the decisions they made, but does not chastise those that haven't made the same choices. She talks about what worked and what did not. She mentions their failures, rather than painting the whole experience in the rosy "DIY" light that we get on television and most other books on the subject.I loved this book! And it's a beauty, certainly worthy of your bookshelf. Leigh packed the book with dozens and dozens of photos, really bringing their homestead to life. The writing's concise and the layout is so well done. Often, self-published books fall victim to layout/structural issues, but Leigh (as usual!) did her homework and devoted a year to getting it right. Yes, true to her philosophy, she did everything herself rather than hiring out the various parts of production. That meant learning many new opensource software programs and diving into self-publishing head first. The results speak for themselves.I highly recommend this book.
This book is an excellent read for those interested in self-sufficiency and the simple, rural life. Rather than a manual, it is a memoir regarding a couple of empty nesters (age 40-60?) who search for and find a small property to facilitate a satisfying and more simple life.Unlike the majority of "homesteaders" who are young and, perhaps, more affluent, this book sets forth a work in progress which seems to move forward despite a huge lack of capital, a shorter time horizon than the young possess, and a husband who still engages in substantial off-premises work. Although the homestead is in the Appalachians the book as a certain New England flavor.Swirling through this memoir are thoughts about the various philosophies and motivations felt by others and those of the authors. In particular the chapter on "Obstacles" is a nice discussion on the couple's foundational values and our consumerist society in general. This is not a do-it-yourself manual, at least in so far as it describes establishing a homestead. The author is candid about her and her husband's limitations and mistakes. It is hard not to second guess a few of their decisions. That is not to say that they don't accomplish a lot and do some very smart things in a relatively short period. However, they tend to sort of lurch into some situations. One I found sadly funny is their decision to raise animals. The author recounts the old farm saying that you should never name animals you may have to eat or kill. Yet, all the edible animals seem to have names. She recounts their nerves and misgivings regarding dispatching a rooster and the great deal of wasted effort to save a goat. She sort of proves the point to not giving them names, by suffering accordingly.Nevertheless, I agree with all these rave reviews. The book is a well-written, easy read with a number of black and white pictures to "put you in the place." It is filled with a lot of interesting facts which would be useful to any other homesteader. The author's ruminations on their view of society and their own reasons for homesteading are very personal yet food for anyone's thought. On balance, I find this one of the best reads on homesteading if you are not searching for a "manual." Also, the book includes a plethora of references and suggested readings plus a short appendix of "country" recipes that look worth trying.
This book looks at self sufficiency a little differently than other resources I've seen. For one, the author is open about sharing what worked, what didn't work and what they'd like to try in the future. That honesty allows you to take from their experience and use what you need. Their level of commitment is very high but she doesn't expect yours to be and I liked that very much - it's not gloating and self-congratulatory. It's well indexed so you can refer to the information that's pertinent or you can do as I did and read it straight through - like a book :) Nice job and worth the purchase.
