Stephen Ausherman has put together a wonderful guide to walks that illuminate the different neighborhoods of Albuquerque. He put in exhaustive research on the history and architecture of each local. The reader comes away with a unique understanding of the city. Highly recommended.
I've already done one of the walks. It was just as printed -- time and length. Very good. I'm looking forward to doing the rest of the walks. The book is very well organized and the design of each entry is great. I also like the fact that if a walk isn't a loop, the book tells you the most direct route back or suggests which mode of public transportation you should use to return to your car. It consolidates the Walk Albuquerque walks (separate brochures put out by the city of Albuquerque).
I love the ideas in the book. As soon as it cools off, I think we're going to be taking some very interesting walks. Thanks for the tips on Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery. I've seen this for years, always wondered, and am looking forward to knowing what lies inside the gates.

Okay but perhaps it's just too much with endless maps for just ordinary tourist purposes.
very good map book of CAL. A lot of information in the back of the book
I have a 1991 version of this atlas and it's much easier to use and follow. This 2004-5 version is too detailed to use and read while on the road and follow while driving. The plus is that it has more detailed city maps.
Too bad the series has gone out of print.
I found it pretty annoying that there is no overlap between pages - if a place is located very close to the edge of one page, you cannot find it on another page. Therefore, figuring out, how to get there is very hard. They could create some overlaps between pages, like Michelin atlases always do, instead of wasting page space on ocean areas.I wish Michelin had a road atlas of California.

Before smart phones there were/ are maps. Fast, reliable and it stays in my truck so it is out of the way.

It was initially intended to be Stu Ungar's autobiography, and "Stuey" is quoted throughout. No reader is excluded from the card-related parts of the story because there are easy-to-follow descriptions of how gin and other games are played. The details of the most famous legends, e.g. Bob Stupak's challenge, and the time Stuey called a massive all-in bet with ten-high and won --are here.Stu Ungar had *flaming* 24-karat ACA symptoms such as guessing what normal behavior is, addiction to risk, being impulsive, being unable to take care of himself, and unexpected strong emotional reactions (outbursts). Throughout his childhood, he spent his time in activities that were not typical for his age. I think he internalized the beatings by his father as negative self-feelings.Constant turmoil was normal to him. When everything was going OK and he had his own bed to sleep in, he seemed to find that more unsettling.As the authors put it, "He was desperate for approval." And to quote Don McNamee (p. 242), "His main problem was that he always needed instant gratification." And as Stu himself said, "See, I'm the most loyal person in the world." Those are all classic ACA symptoms.I was surprised at the extent and authenticity of his mafia connections; that was no b.s.He was an action-junkie who repeatedly lost what money he had by betting on sports, horse races, pit games, golf, you-name-it.It cannot be overemphasized how well written this book is, especially by today's crummy standards. There are very few typos. Use of the correct word is demonstrated as an art form. There's even an index. I was dumbfounded by a couple of these reader-reviews that criticized the writing.
There is nothing not to like because coming in you are not expecting something huge like William Manchester's Biography of Churchill. The book very much keeps your interest, assuming the subject interests you.Stuey Ungar was a genius in the sense that he was practically born playing cards like Picasso was born drawing pictures or Mozart was born playing the piano. He ran afoul of drugs and was not good at managing money but these kinds of issues were the flip side of his strength, he was like a guy who always drove with his high beams on and his foot to the floor and pretty single minded, he liked to gamble. One nice line, Page 76, "Stuey wasn't a con man or a hustler; he was an assassin". Meaning that he would not throw a game and so lost out on some good money, if he paced himself more gamblers would have taken him on and he would have made more money but he couldn't pace himself. I recommend this book.
This book held my attention. Fascinating tale of a good guy caught up in the gambling world of Las Vegas. Sad to witness his downward spiral and great losses due to gambling. What a sad ending for one who seemed to be a smart and caring guy struck down by his gambling addiction.

This book is absolutely incredible and you must read it. I've been binge-reading it for the past 24 hours, almost done at this point, and have already emailed or texted 5 people that they must get it ASAP. It has upended some of my long-held convictions of what's "traditional". It has touched upon and tied together all the recent trends - from "Marry Him" to "Rules" to online dating and many others. It added fascinating, often funny and sometimes painful (e.g. AIDS epidemic) historical narratives. It has put words to feelings I've long tried to express myself - the despair of having to play a certain role in dating and suppressing my desires in every step. Most importantly, it has framed what I have long thought of as my personal issues as societal changes or problems at large. I know I will keep thinking about this book for a while, will keep recommending it to others, and will undoubtedly reread it. Many thanks to the author for all the work (and heart) that has gone into researching and writing this book.
Anyone who is single and finds him or herself on a Friday night apathetically "swiping" and wondering, "how did I get here" should read this book. The answer for how to do something different is not necessarily in its pages but you can take comfort that being single isn't necessarily as bad or as personally a fault as one may think. It's also a fascinating sociological study about culture constructing how we search for love and what we think we are searching for.
What a wonderful read! Labor of Love is a fanscinating exploration of how dating has evolved in response to economic, social, and cultural shifts over the last 100 years. While the book is well researched and certainly a serious intellectual exploration of the subject matter, drawing on over 100 years of material, it's hilarious and entirely accessible. I honestly couldn't put it down. Would give it 100 stars if I could!
A good overview of the modern invention of dating and how the institution escaped the early charges of prostitution. In this current time where people are voting because one man-one woman is their belief of history it should be more popular.
Thoughtful, well researched, articulate and thought-provoking. This is the best overview of dating and the history of dating that I've ever read. I highly recommend this book.
What a great read--intelligent, timely and written with such flair and wit; the depth and rigor of Weigel's research is highly impressive. Although it may be sobering to accept the reality of economic forces invading our intimate relationships, I am glad have a much better understanding of what my children and nephews are faced with today. I will no longer ask them, "Why don't you just take her on a date?"
Five stars! This was a compelling read - Weigel really digs deep into our culture and will make you think about how you think about love (or how you haven't thought about it!). Well-written and well researched with some new information. On a personal level, I have experienced a great deal of growth in my years of dating - this book sheds a great deal of light on where some of my frustrations have originated. As long as there are others who are ready to work and change the social norms, I think we are on the right track!
This is a great example of how capitalism has structurally and mechanically changed our lives for the worse.

I currently have at least four books I've begun to read but have set aside to continue reading at a later time. Yesterday I opened "Holding Silvan, a brief life" by Monica Wesolowska and could not put it down (except to sleep) until I read each and every word, finishing it today. The words so raw and honest reach deep within the soul and challenge us to step into the shoes of parents who are faced with the horrific news that their child will not live but to also have to decide how to best love that child and what that means. Monica does not hold back her deepest thoughts or shield the reader from the ugly truths of her journey and I applaud her for her bravery. This book, no doubt, has and will help other moms and dads understand they are not alone. Monica and David have done love in the most selfless way imaginable.
I picked this book up at a friend's house and read the first 20 pages then asked if I could borrow it. Then her husband (who is NOT usually a reader)decided he had to read it so I ended up ordering it anyway. I read the rest of it in one sitting while telling my husband, children, and dog to please just leave me alone. I never would have thought such a subject matter could draw me in, but it is a real page-turner.Weslowska writes the day by day chronology of all the difficult ethical and emotional decisions she and her husband had to make after having a baby whose brain was damaged during delivery. It is a detailed account of what this kind of traumatic event actually feels like and it is incredibly revealing of where we are as a society in regards to medical technology and the ethics of living and dying. This book is very important right now; medical technology has come so far and we find ourselves facing end-of-life decisions no one is prepared to make.It is also beautifully written, elegant and clear prose that rings with authenticity and grace. Weslowska doesn't back away from any of the prickly issues at hand. I highly recommend this book; it is a must-read for anyone who is facing a difficult decision about a loved one's quality of life, also practitioners especially in hospice situations or people who work with children who have life-threatening illnesses.
This powerful, well-wrought book is a must for anyone thinking about death and parenting in the modern age. Wesolowska shares with us, in beautiful prose, the story of her and her husband's decision to spend the few precious weeks of their firstborn son's life holding and loving him as opposed to forcing him to stay alive via intrusive, artificial means. It is a hard book to read, but well worth the effort. Wesolowska doesn't sugarcoat the experience of disappointment, rage, and loss that is necessarily part of such an experience. We follow her story with baited breath, as she must have, hoping against hope that Silvan will somehow survive in spite of it all. He does not. And we experience her pain as a parent, struggling to reconcile her joy-filled expectations with the heartbreaking reality of her son's brief life. The ultimate message, however, is one of hope: Silvan - even in his short time among us - lives a full life. A strange and unexpectedly complete life. Yet the book is not merely an intimate narrative of Silvan's life. Wesolowska does not stop there (although she could have). Interwoven with this bittersweet tale, is a compelling meditation on American culture and the American medical establishment, both of which too often value quantity over quality. The fact that Wesolowska is able to move us not only emotionally, but also intellectually, is a tribute to her skill as an author and her love as a mother. This book should be required reading for all medical professionals.
Intense, and surprisingly uplifting. It is a compelling story, and while I found some of the decisions difficult to bear, I never doubted that Silvan's parents were following their hearts. The honesty in this memoir is both painful and inspirational.
Wesolowska not only writes an emotionally gripping account of her severely brain damaged son's birth and short life, but she offers profound observations about the medical and ethical issues involved. I doubt that a more revealing account could be written about such an experience. No simple minded platitudes here, just honest, probing reflection amidst a powerful experience of love.
I came across the author's article in the New York Times about her memoir. I immediately downloaded the book on my kindle and began reading that night. I couldn't put it down. Three months earlier my husband and I made the heartbreaking decision to terminate a much wanted pregnancy. A pregnancy that we battled infertility and multiple IVF cycles to conceive. I resonated with this book on so many levels. The author's writing is incredible. She made a heart wrenching decision out of love for her son. I was so extremely comforted by reading this. We kept our decision private for fear of judgment by others, and it was so comforting to read their story. Anyone who has lost someone close to them will find a connection to this book. I cannot recommend it enough. Their strength is a true inspiration.
