I had high hopes for this book given the reviews here. I bought this book brush up on my existing knowledge and learn new things and was very excited to receive it. There are some interesting points and I liked that it has a section on heuristics. It introduced me to the idea of simulated annealing, which I am using for a problem at work now actually, but like most things in the book I had to turn to the internet for a better explanation. The book is a bit wordy and hard to read at times.The other major gripe I had is with the code examples. Most variables and method parameters are named a, k, c .. etc. For instance here is a method header in the backtracking section: construct_candidates(int a[], int k, int n, int c[], int *ncandidates)This makes the code very hard to read and follow as well when you are a lines deep in a method trying to figure out whatk[i] - c + a is. It has been my experience that most math/engineer types and professors tend to write code this way vs giving things descriptive names so the code is easily understandable. The book would be 10X more valuable had the code samples been clearer. I ended up sending it back.
Buyer beware! Amazon appears to be selling counterfeit textbooks. I have notified Amazon of this problem and re-purchased and still received what I believe to be counterfeits due to the very poor quality of the color, binding, printing, and horrible misspellings on the back of the book in particular.The contents of the book is great BTW. However I'd recommend buying direct from publisher.
If you've been sentenced with the CLRS book (Introduction to Algorithms), buy this book in addition!! CLRS has very firm technical descriptions, but The Algorithm Design Manual is simply much more enjoyable and provides a lot of the motivation for using some of the algorithms described in CLRS. The book is simply a delight to read.ALSO: perhaps most importantly, if you are a recent graduate of a computer science program and you are trying to get a job in the field, this is the FIRST book I would recommend to review algorithms and data structures. DO NOT EVEN BOTHER to pick up CLRS (unless specifically directed to do otherwise), as more than likely the questions you will get during the interview will be some variation of the problems that you will encounter in here. I had at least one interview in which all of the problems were derivatives of those mentioned in here; unfortunately I had not yet found this book and so I was rather poorly prepared. When I first picked this up a few months later, I immediately recognized it's value and the fact that this was the only resource I had needed all along.
Not sure why this is listed as "abridged" but the number of pages matches the other listing for the item. It took a fair amount of searching on the ISBN to find someone who disclosed the number of pages.Personally, I really like Mr. Skiena's writing style and his presentation is clear. It's not as dry as Sedgwick. This has now become my favorite book on algorithms.
This book seems to be a very loose touch on algorithms. The author stated his algorithm for solving the pyramidal number problem from pp 52 - 54, but where can we find and try out his program mentioned that it got 30,000 times faster, etc.? For the matrix multiplication problem stated on p 403, it just refers to other people's work without giving anything concrete.If you are looking for algorithms with real, working implementations, it might be worthwhile to check out "Algorithms with Implementation in C: a Quantitative Approach."
Steven covers a lot of topics and as often as not - not deep enough. I would have prefer fewer topics and examples, but more depth. Also, all his example code is in C++. I would have much preferred a pseudo code to any specific programming language.As others have noted, the spine is very weak, and fell apart rather easily. The publisher noted that it was printed on acid-free paper but failed to note it was bound with sticky-free glue.
It's not a great one to start off with, especially if you never did an algorithms class in college. I'd say it's a decent second book, as it has enough complexity, but it has a somewhat readable style. You can tell the author really tried to make the material approachable, but it's nowhere near as beginner friendly as the amazing book "Grokking Algorithms", that one is a true beginners book. This is a decent second one.
This book is great! For a lot of software engineers, you don't really end up dealing with data-structures or interesting algorithms; most of the time you're stuck in business logic. So it's easy to get rusty on your basic concepts. This book does a great job reintroducing those concepts to you. Even if you're a novice, this book is great. But if you've already had some exposure to CS-II/CS-III level concepts, then that is pretty helpful as well.The author introduces the algorithms and data-structures in practical terms and so it is easy to relate to them instead of thinking of them as purely abstract and theoretical. I especially liked the "war stories", where he shows you how he was able to apply theory in practice. What is great about this is that it lets you recognize the different problem domains and where you can apply specific algorithms and/or data-structures.The second half of the book is essentially a catalog of different problems that you can encounter, and how you can solve them with specific algorithms/data-structures or variations thereof.All in all, a great book and it is absolutely indispensable for a good software-engineer.

This book tells the now familiar story of Robert Johnson's life, from his up-bringing, his "meeting" the Devil, to his lifestyle of drinking and womanizing, to his music, and his early death. The story was written by J.M. Dupont and the illustrations are by Mezzo.And while the story is well told it's the strikingly beautiful illustrations that elevate this book to something special. The warm-toned black and white illustrations are both evocative and straightforward in detail. Pausing to really look at virtually every panel will increase the enjoyment factor greatly From Johnson's tough upbringing, his early attempts at playing the guitar, his "sudden" mastery of the instrument, his ramblings with fellow bluesman Johnny Shines, his philandering with married women, his drinking ("never drink from an open bottle"), to his early death, not from a poisoned bottle of alcohol given to him by a jealous husband, but from pneumonia. The illustrations are well matched with Dupont's telling of the story.Also included is a section titled "Song Book" that has the lyrics to some of Johnson's most famous songs along with some full page impressionistic drawings across from each lyric page. There's also a panel that features Eric Clapton singing Johnson's "Crossroads", and several panels of the Rolling Stones at Altamont singing another Johnson tune "Love In Vain", the last penal which alludes to (possibly) the Devil. A small Bibliography is also included.This is a beautifully done book--from the thick hardboard covers, the period style graphic pattern used on the end papers, to the thick paper stock, and of course, the wonderful illustrations that are visually so arresting. At times Mezzo's work is vaguely reminiscent of R. Crumb's work, especially in the many faces throughout the book. The book is 72 pages in length and is 7 3/4" X 12". But don't let the slim number of pages deter you from checking this book out. This is a case where quality most definitely outstrips quantity.A few of the panels contain illustrations dealing with sex, and while not totally overt, it's obvious what's going on. And one panel has Johnson uttering the "f" word ,and there's some risque lyrics in other panels of Johnson's songs. I don't think this will matter much to most people familiar with Johnson's lifestyle, and it is a depiction of that period and his life. But I thought I'd warn anyone who may be offended. In defense I have to say that without the sex scenes and lyrics this wouldn't be true to the tale of Johnson's life. This is a book to add to your shelf of blues books if you're a fan of Johnson's music.This is quite a good month for blues fans looking for books on the blues. Also well worth checking out is a book by Bill Dahl, "The Art of the Blues--A Visual Treasury of Black Music's Golden Era". This too is a well produced book that's a visual feast for fans of the blues in (roughly) the first half of the Twentieth Century. I've posted a review of that book too if it sounds interesting.
Dupont and Mezzo may have hit on the best way to tell Robert Johnson’s story. Part of what makes him “Robert Johnson†is the vague boundaries that drift around the facts of his life. I’d even be a bit disappointed to find that somewhere, somehow there were a definitive factual biography. The facts would be untrue to the Robert Johnson we conjure in talking about the history of the blues.The book is as much visual art as textual story, as a graphic treatment should be. The story is told in words against a visual background that lends the words a kind of just-right slipperiness they wouldn’t have on their own. The art work is striking, heavy black and white. The depiction of Johnson’s pinstripe suit jumps out of the pages, contributing to that not quite real effect.Dupont, the author of the text, wrote the story around the pivot of religion, Johnson’s mythological choice to ally with the devil. But he doesn’t just treat it, like I’ve seen elsewhere, as a personal bargain with the devil for supernatural guitar skills. It’s a framework for the whole story — Johnson’s divorce from the church-infused side of the blues and of black culture during his time. He plays on the other side, in the other places, and hangs out with the other people. It’s where his music flourishes, and it’s where he meets his quick ending. And again, you see it in the artwork behind the story as it’s told.It might only take a half hour to read the book — it goes by quickly, kind of like Johnson’s life. But the art is so good, and the text so haunting that I know I’ll dip back into it now and then just for a quick hit.Lyrics for Johnson’s better known songs are included at the back of the book, along with an illustration for each. The illustrations are, like all the illustrations in the book, not literal. They evoke the mood of the songs. Really good.
I'm not a consumer of graphic novels, but I am a lover of music in general and the blues specifically. So when I saw this book was available at first I hesitated to consider a purchase. But the description of the book and samples of the artwork led me to take a chance on it, and I'm so glad I did. This book is not just a story with drawings, it is a work of art. It exceeded my expectations in every way. From the design of the binding to the high quality heavy paper of the pages, this publication is top notch in every possible aspect. The illustrations are striking and illuminate the story so much that you can get lost in them as much as the story. It's all much greater than the sum of it's parts. I love the art and loved the stories featured in this volume. I loved to see Elizabethfight to protect Ciel as he, Sebastian and the others slowly come to learn thetrue nature of this cruise and the reasons behind it. Must read! Read other books in thisseries!
This manga is an excellent combination of mystery, detective, melodrama, dark humor and cute comedy. "Campania" arc brought a lot of action to this coctail. I like it very much. And I especially love this volume, because it uncovers personalities of a lot of key characters: Lizzie, all Midford family, Undertaker, Viscount of Druitt, and, of course, Sebastian and Ciel with their complicated and thrilling relationship.But I need to say few words to Amazon and Yen Press. Sorry, but I am really beside myself with indignation that DRM of the Kindle versions of Yana Toboso books doesn't allow to read them on my Kindle Keyboard. I have already sent letters both to Amazon support and Yen Press, but nothing happened. I have bought only 2 volumes - and want to buy the whole series, but why should I read it on my small phone if I own Kindle?!
Yay elizabeth is not just another stupid daughter of high society! I think that being able to use a sword is more useful than pretty ribbons anyways. I think that she should continue to be this way but i can see why she wants to be cute but she could curve that cuteness a little.
Wife loves the manga, I just watched the TV series so have some catching up to do.
I bought these books for my daughter who is really into anime(to the point of actually learning Japanese), and she absolutely loves them!

I ordered this e-book for a few reasons. One is I have ordered other cookbooks from this author (Sam Kuma) and really enjoyed them. I am also an experimenting Vegan (working on it) been vegetarian for over 3 years now and wanted to add to my Vegan recipe collection. The last reason I wanted to try this book is because I love mediterranean food. This recipe E-book "Mediterranean Diet for Vegans" did not fail me. I have tried several recipes and loved them all. The e-book contains homemade pastes, sauces, dips, breakfast dishes, salads, soups, appetizers, main courses and the must have items (deserts). The recipes all contain fresh ingredients and are healthy. The ones I made were delicious and fairly easy to make. Making healthy food with fresh ingredients takes a little prep time, but that is normal anytime you are trying to eat healthy. The recipe I made on my video and pictures was the Mediterranean Bean soup. It was amazing! I can't wait to try all the recipes. I highly recommend this book and any cookbook by Sam Kuma. He has a great mixture of recipes in all of his books. I ordered this ebook because I have a few vegan friends and find it a real challenge to cook anything interesting for them. I can make lots of delicious vegan-friendly side dishes, but I've found it really hard to make a complete vegan meal.This was a big improvement over the last vegan cookbook I tried, which was a mexican cookbook that kept using the same 4 ingredients over and over, plus an over-reliance on highly processed fake sour cream, fake cheese, etc.This cookbook used a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, and grains, in some combinations I have never tried before.The only thing I can imagine that would improve this cookbook would be some pictures.
I have other cookbooks from Sam Kuma, so I was excited to try out the recipes in this one at a discount. I'm not a vegan, but we are trying to eat healthier, and recently became pescatarian. This cookbook is perfect, as I can always adjust the recipes if we want to add fish, but otherwise, they are great as they are! I love that there aren't a bunch of cumbersome ingredients that I have to buy - I can use what I already have or usually buy, and make healthy, delicious meals.I also love that there are always a variety of recipes in Sam's cookbooks. This one has chapters for quick and easy recipes, slow cooker ones, Italian, and ice cream ones. There are pastas, dips, salads, soups, appetizers, (breakfast lunch and dinner) entrees, and desserts. We've tried many, and have loved every one we've tried. I love how flavorful they are, and they make me see how easy it is to eat vegetarian or vegan without feeling like you're sacrificing flavor. I love it! Highly recommend this and other Sam Kuma cookbooks!

A covert narcissist worked in my office for awhile. If you are not the narcissist, this can be a job- or career-killer for you, as they will try to kill your hopes and dreams and livelihood. They won't kill you physically but they will drain you of everything positive. It was a scary time. Thankfully my office wised up to the problem and he was fired. Meanwhile 13 months of working with him were the worst of the 25 years of my career.Books like this help you understand. And I think "understanding" is unfortunately about the best you can do. I found learning about the narcissist personality and tactics they will inflict on you help you to build armor around yourself. They will make you think YOU are the problem. You have to be strong and know that you are not the problem. Knowing their modus operandi helps you to counteract it. For example, don't fall for the gaslighting, consciously recognize when it's happening so you can protect yourself.I'm not sure anything can help you solve the problem. Every bit of advice I found said "non-communication" is the only solution. That's hard to do when the narc is a colleague on a small team and you MUST communicate. I found these helped me:-- Do not meet with the narc without someone else present. EVER. Because everything said will get twisted by the narc and make you look bad. You need someone else (a non-narc and a non-friend of the narc) so someone else can corroborate your side of the story. Believe me if you don't want your professional reputation ruined, DO NOT EVER MEET ALONE with a true narcissist. ESPECIALLY a covert narcissist. Also the narcissist will say negative things and use body language (eye rolls, scrunched up face) that may likely make you emotionally upset. Getting upset and recovering from it is very distracting when you have work to do. This treatment might be less likely to happen if there's someone else in the meeting who is your ally and not the narc's ally. And if the behavior does happen, someone else can corroborate your description of what happened. My workplace has a team environment, so it was easy in our culture to be sure someone else was always at meetings with our "office narc." Usually several people are working on a project together. If you don't have a team environment, you may have an office best friend who might be willing to help you by sitting in on meetings with you.-- Definitely do not ever meet behind a closed door with only you and the narcissist. Keep that door open, especially when there's people working outside the door who can overhear. You want them to overhear. If you meet with the narc alone, everything will get twisted, it's your word against theirs, and if you are not also a wolf, they will make you look bad. They're better at that game than you are. Keep the office or meeting room door open. If the narc wants to close a door, tell a white lie like the temperature isn't comfortable, you need air (who would argue with that?) etc. If the narc closes the door, get up and open the door again while saying this. It's not likely they will try to close the door again, unless they really are ridiculous. And yeah I think it's ridiculous that you have to get into games like this, but this is the destruction of reasonableness by narcissists.-- Instead of talking, communicate through email. You will have documentation of every instruction you give (that typically isn't followed, understood or it's argued with unprofessionally). And you will have documentation of every word the narcissist writes to you. You will likely see some really unprofessional behavior come from the narcissist. They can't help themselves. You will then have this documented. You want this. Usually they are so full of themselves that they will be unable to see that what they wrote is unprofessional. They will try to frame you as unprofessional. But you will have it in writing, in black and white, and any reasonable boss or HR rep will be able to see the truth. I did this and it helped other people see the true nature of the communications between me and our workplace narcissist. I can't emphasize the importance of this enough. DOCUMENT. Try to not discuss important things verbally. When things go wrong, it will become them vs you and you will have no documentation if communications are verbal.-- They may figure out what you're doing and accuse you of not talking to them. Our workplace narcissist did this to me. I responded very frankly (because the person's boss and a VP were in the meeting where we discussed my non-communication) that I had to communicate by email because when I didn't, the narcissist forgot things or didn't follow things. And they seemed to do better when instructions were given in email. And, to be honest, I wanted to create a papertrail about this. You can call it exactly what it is first, so they can't blame you for making a papertrail. There is nothing wrong with papertrails. Many office procedures are specifically designed to build papertrails. Our workplace narcissist's problem with following instructions was known to many. I stated a fact, I didn't get emotional in response to hist attack, and actually he admitted he had a problem remembering things and following instructions and he would try to do better. So ... know that you may get attacked for following these steps. Be prepared to defend yourself with a rational explanation. Documentation and papertrails are very rational and appropriate for the workplace.-- If the narc is your boss, look for another job. I'm sorry but having dealt with this personality, that is your only option to save yourself, your career reputation, and your livelihood. Wise up to it fast. It hurts but the situation won't change. Face reality and take the actions you need to get out.-- If you want to attack the narc, be prepared for their attack back at you, and be prepared that they will be very good at what they do when they attack you. They may attack you behind your back and you won't see it coming. This is why I recommend DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT.-- Have good people in your personal life who can help support you. Focus on building and maintaining your good reputation at work with others. Get professional counseling if you must. You need to protect yourself. Work out your frustrations with exercise, try not to use too much alcohol or reality TV shows. :) I admit I wasn't so great at this last bit of advice -- bad TV is so good!! :)This review went way beyond the book - but this was what worked to help me, and I expect you are here because you're having a problem. It explains just how I was feeling. A doctor recommended this book. I needed to really understand how people take advantage of me. This book has answered all my questions. I will be discussing this book with my pastor. Not everyone fights fair. When they can no longer control you then they try to control what others think of you.
This book should be required reading. For everyone. Period.I had no idea that there was such a personality known as "covert-aggressive" but now that I DO know, I realize just how many times in my life I've been raked over the coals by these types, most times leaving my head spinning in shock that it happened, yet again.I never "got it" until I read this book.I've always been considered a "nice" person. Sometimes maybe TOO nice. And with this perception often comes "confusing kindness with weakness."Covert-aggressives cash in on this full-throttle. They're sneaky, conniving, smart, and ALWAYS watching you to decide which move they'll make to get what they want, in the same way a cat watches a mouse: quietly. Cats never come right out and pounce on their prey; there's always the "lead up" time where they just take it all in and STUDY their victims. This is PRECISELY what covert-aggressives do for a living with flattery, baby-talk, no conscience, no accountability, "poor me" and "I had no idea" all rolled into one hugely dysfunctional (and damaging - to YOU) burrito.THIS is the new "evil." Pay attention - they're everywhere.So, read this book and find out what to look for IMMEDIATELY.
I'm fascinated by psychology, and why people do what they do. The book explores the interesting concept of the "covertly aggressive" individual, someone who uses subtly manipulative tactics to further his own agendas, while still preserving the image of a good person ("impression management") and effectively concealing his true intentions. These tactics are insidious, and particularly confusing to conscientious people, who often fall prey to these underhanded individuals with less-than-stellar motives. The two most valuable insights that I gained from the book are the reminder to be aware that not all people operate from a place of personal integrity, and that over-intellectualizing why people do what they do, is counterproductive. It's more important to recognize manipulation when it occurs, confront it in the moment and self-protect. In all of the examples presented, the manipulation "victims" knew something was wrong, but failed to trust their own initial intuitions and perceptions. I do believe that most people are predominantly good, but also recognize that there are others who exist solely to advance themselves at any expense to others. This is perhaps the hardest thing to learn. It is easier to excuse bad behavior than stand up to it, but freedom exists in being aware and assertive. This book is a good starting point of reference for anyone interested in psychology and human behavior. It is informative and instructive, though other books in the same genre may offer more in-depth material. Typographical errors detracted from the content.
