I got this book to help walk me through some of the problems in the real text. As I saw other people said, this book leaves out many small steps that seem crucial and leave you wondering where they get certain numbers from. It helps but sometimes takes longer than it should to find out how to work out an answer. It would be nice if the author put more text in this book explaining the problems more in depth. I also found a lot of minor errors that can throw you off at first.
Horrible textbook. Equations aren't clear and the problems expect you to know things that weren't explained in the chapter. It seems the book does more storytelling than teaching. My professor said there's no real good book for modern physics but I find it hard to believe that others are worse than this. Trying to do the problems was an absolute nightmare.
It is a good book if you can find it for a low price. You can find the solution manual online and with it you can have a leg up on any modern physics class. There are errors, though, and the authors make some concepts more difficult to understand than what is necessary.
This book goes into a considerable amount of depth for an introductory modern Physics class. Great supplemental text if you are looking for another perspective on the topic matter. Book problems are very realistic and require more thought than other introductory physics books (In my experience at least). In conclusion - great book for supplemental study - very dense as well, so diligence is a requirement for getting the value out of this book.
Alright I won't go too much into it, but let's face it... it is a hard subject. That being said I feel like Tipler could have done a better job being more concise about it. The book has very few examples and the ones that they do have are so basic compared to the homework problems that they point out, I don't think its even fair.

The Amazon preview gives a different edition, which does include all the book. THIS EDITION is incomplete: the chapter about astronomy is NOT included in the book. It is exclusively on the Internet, per the table of contents. I gave it a one star rating because the table of contents lists material which is not available in the book.
Not well-edited. I had to buy this because of my class. But if you are just buying for your own reading, buy 'six ideas that changed physics' instead.

However, this is not another book about "Biblical manhood" (thank God), but about vulnerability and fear as it relates to our experiences in the untamed areas in our lives.This book is not preachy and it appears to have no agenda. Some people may not like the disjointed nature of the book - there is no real overarching narrative and it jumps around in time a lot - but it's easy to read (the chapters are short), and the prose is gorgeous and poetic. We Stood Upon Stars fills a glaring void in the Christian book market - the relationship between people, places, and the allure of the open road, early morning mountain sunset, and a good craft brew (beer or coffee, your choice).Thompson certainly has a gift with describing the intertwining beauty of faith and nature. Some of these essays are extremely powerful, especially the ones related to fatherhood and the death of his grandfather. Ultimately, We Stood Upon Stars is an breathtakingly simple and intoxicating read - one that affirms the desire for travel and adventure without downplaying the harsh reality of the heartbreaks of life. Most travelogues or adventure narratives are about escaping yourself by running away into the unknown; We Stood Upon Stars is all about finding yourself by running into the wildness of your soul and the land.Also of note: Each essay has a hand-sketched map attached the beginning of each chapter. These are amazing. Each map contains notes on where to eat, drink, fish, hike, and explore that you won't find on a mainstream travel guide.
I didn't know what to expect when I bought this book. I liked the cover and I really liked the synopsis. When I started reading, I'll be honest I didn't know what to think about it, but the further along I got I really liked going on the author, Roger's adventures. The book has it all, Tidbits of history, truth, family, friends, funny stories and faith. It even has maps of the places Roger has been! It's a great book for any outdoors person in your life and even if you don't like the outdoors you should still read it! I find myself wanting to visit all the places Roger has been, a great read!
Seldom do I find a book that I both want to binge-read through in one sitting and slow down to read one fantastic chapter at a time to stretch out the experience at the same time. Roger Thompson's writing is like a fabulous glass of great wine, enjoyed by a fireplace, in the woods, after a day of hiking and kayaking with your best friends and family. It simply does not get any better than that. Wait, it actually does because the author also intertwines those strings in life that tie us to our maker in the most organic and beautiful ways. Faith and adventure, what could be better. Please read and enjoy that you did.
I've truly enjoyed reading, "We Stood Upon Stars." Roger Thompson's writing is beautiful, humble, honest and so descriptive that I can feel and see everything.As a woman who doesn't necessarily consider herself religious, I've found Thompson's travel essays to be some sort of experience, one that I could connect to something bigger. His deep gratitude for nature proves to be a spiritual one and through the essays it has become one for me as well.It would be difficult to not find Thompson's candor endearing, however more importantly, his fierce desire for self-exploration is inspiring and contagious. I've found myself reconsidering the importance of summertime with my own children, perhaps through Thompson's lens having the courage to road trip the Midwest like I've always wanted. "We Stood Upon Stars," has rattled something inside me that's been stirring for quite some time, and now I think I'm finally ready to hit the road.
While we live in this fast paced world filled with gadgets that take us away from what is really important, Roger takes us to a good place. I felt so refreshed to go on these trips, take the back roads, slow down and really see things instead of trying to reach a destination. I loved the humor and mishaps along the way. I related so much to my families trips and the many breakdowns of vehicles that you hate at the time, but add humor to the adventure later on when you look back and these things stand out. Roger's writing takes you on these adventures in a way that makes you feel like you have been there. Enjoy the ride!
What a beautiful book. I've never taken the time to write a book review, but this book was too compelling not too. For anyone who loves the outdoors, the author's descriptions of different locations and trips are enough to make this book worth your time. But what this book did is really speak to me as a man, and what it means to be a son, a husband, a father, a brother, a grandfather. That is where this book really shines, and it literally brought me to tears several times.
If you love the great outdoors this book is for you. If you have children and enjoyed being a part of their lives as they grew up this book is for you. If you love VW vanagons then this book is for you.Very well written and it flows great. The exploration of our National Parks along with the father / son / grandfather dynamics are something that any man can relate to.I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

Wonderful book. It is great to get behind the headlines and learn about the real lives of some very famous celebrities. You see how very human they were, how many mistakes they made and how often, and how infidelity was a big problem for many of the men, such as Bob Hope and Gary Cooper. But is it also inspiring to see them come to grips with the problems and challenges of their lives. Particularly as they aged, so many of them had a deep sense of needing to make things right. Many of them joined the Catholic Church and it seems to have offered them the solace and peace that they needed. These are fascinating stories. Of course those lives are only partially covered; after all, each of these celebrities would merit their own full-length biography. But during Lent especially, their stories offer food for thought. I am grateful for this book. It is inspiring and fun to read. What more could you ask?

Very complete book, a little hard in some points
Web Coding & Development is a compilation of 8 different books aimed mainly at entry-level website developers who have at least some familiarity with coding. The material is pretty basic and parts of it are more for reference than for reading straight through.I was a bit surprised that the book basically ignored the fact that most websites these days are not coded by hand, but rather generated through content management systems (CMS). The average website developer really does not need to know much of the material in this book in order to design a website these days. I believe that this book is targeting people who have written code in other languages before and who want to learn the "under the hood" aspects of how modern HTML design works. In practice, only a tiny percentage of website developers have any idea how to write code by hand, which is what this book teaches. So, if you have previous coding experience and want to learn the details of how modern HTML language works, this is a great place to start, especially considering the amount of information you are getting in a single volume.
Before I retired, I spent much of my career in IT. When it comes to software development and coding, 99% of my experience revolves around the large, mainframe computers. So, I was really happy to see this comprehensive book which gives you an introduction to many of the languages and methods required for web coding and development. It's perfect that all of the different techniques/languages are covered in just one book. While I don't think this book will make you an expert in any of the coding methods, it will definitely give you enough information to learn the basics, and that was exactly what I was looking for. Many computer geeks are self-taught, anyway, so this book is the perfect way to get you started. While I may be an older person, I would definitely also recommend this book for young people who are interested in learning web coding. And, by the way, while I understand it is a marketing brand, none of us are really dummies. Ignorant on certain subjects, maybe, but never, ever dumb. :)
This thick paperback book provides a good overview of the basics of coding for all the current languages that are widely used in web coding. It sort of puts together introductory coding for all the languages into one book. This makes a helpful tutorial and reference book and allows you to look things up offline so you can get coding tips even without web access. Nowadays the most widely used languages on the planet are computer languages, and this book will help get you up to speed on using some of those languages as you develop websites or web applications.

About the Author
Susan Cheever is the author of the biographies E.E. Cummings, American Bloomsbury, and My Name Is Bill, as well as five novels and four memoirs. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, New York Times, and Newsday, among other magazines and anthologies. This book was a great disappointment. I am glad it was free and I paid nothing for it. If a book claims to be some kind of history, I expect that the author has made some kind of effort to present history accurately. From the beginning, the author stated many historical inaccuracies. And in the latter part of the book, it became evident she was presenting as historical facts things that she THOUGHT might be true just to prove her points. It was also clear that she used people she just did not like as examples of drunks. She totally lost me when she blamed the Iraq war on Pres. Bush's drinking. I thought that war was a mistake but really? He had quit drinking long before that. What ever this book is, it is not history.
I was really looking forward to this book, but am now really disappointed. My major problems have been noted by other reviewers, primarily a disjointed timeline (bouncing back and forth time-wise in seemingly random fashion), and worse in my view, factual errors. For example, the writer states that gold was found in California when John Sutter found some flakes while crossing a river. The well-known fact (at least well-known to anyone who has actually studied the history of gold in California) was that John Marshall discovered gold at the site of Sutter's Mill in the Sierra. Another 'error' in my view is the writer stating that Meriwether Lewis attended Washington & Lee University, when it was not named that until after the death of Robert E. Lee. To sum up, I find the book poorly written, and because of its many factual errors, not the kind of history one would expect to find from a widely published and recognized author. The publisher should give serious consideration to employing fact-checkers before publishing any further 'histories' by the author in question.
More of an anti-drinking commentary than a history of alcohol in the US. The author jumps all over on the timeline of history referencing future, past and current events in the same paragraph. Not what I was looking for.
Am not certain a reader can love a book of this type. It is well written and deals with a history of drinking habits which need to be written. It needs to be included on US History course bibliographies.
This was eye opening but made so much “Common Sense “ about our history.
The history was interesting, but not as broad I had hoped. The commentary on the historical vignettes seemed to try to tone down tragedy of the history. It is an interesting and easy read. I would try to borrow it before buying it.
This book read as interestingly as a novel. I am so much more clear now on why we are the way we are here in America. Going from the initial landing of the Mayflower up through our history until current times, the author stunningly describes the origins of our attitudes toward and uses of alcohol from a health perspective, as well as a social, moral, and political standpoint. It was a great learning experience, entertainingly written, and I recommend it highly.It adds an important dimension to understanding our history and the men who were influential in guiding our nation.
Apparently Susan Cheever and her father both had or have problems handling alcohol and this is how she addresses her familial problem of alcohol abuse. It was interesting as we moved into the last 150 or so years of alcohol in America, all the famous drunks happened to be Republicans. We don't hear a word about Teddy Kennedy's problems with alcohol nor other infamous Democrat boozers. After the first 75 years of history the book degenerates into a diatribe against Republican boozers. Sorry, Susan, a recounting of history should be even-handed and your book is not.

Be forewarned - Stay With Me is one of the saddest books I have read in a long time. It is not at all what you might expect, and there are many surprising plot turns. At times the main character Yejide's pain was so excruciating, I was not sure if I could continue. Like Yejide, though, I did and it was worth it. One minor criticism is that the author tells her story from alternating points of view but does not indicate at the beginning of a chapter that the narrator has changed. It creates unnecessary confusion for a few paragraphs each time there is a shifting point of view. The story is good enough without this confusing style. This is an emotional book about marriage, motherhood, family ties and the power of tradition in our lives. I highly recommend it.
Stay With Me is a devastating story about a Nigerian couple's longing to have children, and the lengths to which they go to make that happen.Yejide and Akin have been trying to get pregnant for years. In their culture, there's immense pressure from their families to have children, and though they have deliberately avoided polygamy, the time finally comes for Akin to take on a second wife.This initiates a series of tragic events for Yejide and Akin, particularly when Yejide finally gets pregnant.There are many layers to this story, which is told from both Yejide's and Akin's perspectives. Their mutual desperation causes a permanent rift in their once blissful marriage, each of them making sacrifices that seem right at the time but have lasting consequences.This is a compelling and powerful book, in spite of my never feeling as emotionally invested in it as I would have liked. In many ways it reads as a parable about secrets, betrayal and desperation.
Stay with Me was an emotional story that had me holding my tears on the beach. The writing was amazing. I felt drawn to the characters. This story showed how tradition and belief can test a man’s character. Ayobami Adebayo wrote this story in a way that I couldn’t pick a side. The woman often carries the shame and bear the burden of the family. Even with all the negative decisions, they both made, I still wanted the marriage to survive. This story is a perfect pick for a book club. After reading this story, I find myself wanting to read other reviews. I wanted to read other people’s reaction, especially the ending. I won’t spoil it for you. I loved this story, and I highly recommend you read this novel.
I described this book to my husband as a murder mystery where culture was the criminal. No one person was actually the criminal. Good people who were victims of years of traditions continued to favor traditions over individuals. Fascinating insight into different outlooks on life and yet hauntingly familiar.
Set in Nigeria, this is the story of the orphan-girl, Yejde and the handsome, Akin who meet and fall in love at university. They marry, but after four years and no children, familial and cultural pressures bear down on them. Offspring are part of one's legacy and without children, one has no heritage in Nigeria. The reader's strong emotions cannot help but rise and fall as the themes of love and lust, deceit and truth, birth and death, science and superstition intertwine as the couple try to fulfill their duties to themselves and family. The setting of time and place are very real, with the author including actual events that occurred in Nigeria during the 1980's -1990's: package bombs, democratic elections, ruthless raping bands of robbers and military coups. These historical realities add to the instability of the lives of the protagonists. Remarkably, this is Ms. Adebayo's debut novel and it is remarkable! Yejde believes, "Love is a test." Are you, dear reader, up for the challenge?
Given how many best of 2017 lists this ended up on, it was no big surprise that this book was so good. I could barely out it down. The characters are compelling and just so human, with all the good and bad that that entails. This book takes you through some dark places, but leaves you with just a little renewed hope at the end.
I read this book as a result of seeing it reviewed in my local newspaper. The come on was that it was about a Nigerian woman who is married and her husband brings in another wife after she fails to get pregnant after four years. As I read the book, I kept wishing that I knew a little more about Nigerian culture. It seems that there is a great deal of pressure to have children.While there seems to be a real love between Yejide and Akin, there are aspects of their relationship that just don't add up. Since I don't want to be a spoiler, those who have read the book will understand.Thre is clearly conflict in the relationship and I like the way the author writes one chapter from in the voice of the wife and the next chapter in the voice of the husband so that you can get both perspectives. There were times that I sided with her and then times that I sided with him, although I basicially thought that he was dishonest throughout the relationship.As other reviewers have sad, this is a very sad book. A lot of very sad things happen and you wonder if it is just bad karma or really some kind of curse. That is something that you have to judge for yourself.
I can appreciate that this is an excellent, well-written novel. It's meaningful and compelling- you won't be able to put this down. My reasons for not liking this have to do with my personal taste. I was fond of the characters I shouldn't have been fond of, and the main character was a little melodramatic and off-putting and yet I felt sympathetic towards her. This is one of those novels that drags you in and then spits you out at the end and you're not sure what to think. I'm still not sure what to think and I know that feeling is going to stick with me for a long time.
