Documentary style of events woven almost into a story. Entertaining rating even though the events of that era and mentallity were terrible. It helps if you have visited Port Arthur and seen how desolate the island is, especially in bad weather or high seas. The book does not dwell on the punishments nor the frugality of the convicts existence, so no vivid descriptions of the gory details to put readers off. The readers surely must marvel at the creativity, strength and determination of the convicts to gain their freedom.Well written narrative of events, making the reader realise the slowness of the justice system to respond. Would recommend it as both an interesting read and also for the history / socio-economic student.
Am on the last chapter today of this book, and have to give it 5 stars. Sian Rees' writing is very appealing as she makes the story come alive and the historical individuals become real human beings. James Porter, the main character, was born 150 years too early. If he had been born in the middle of the 20th century, his personality and chutzpah would have equipped him to be a very successful attorney or politician. The other review tells what the basic story of the book is. There is also much informative history of early Tasmania, and of the British Empire's handling of criminal convicts during the early 1800s. An enjoyable read. The descriptions of being at sea, first as ship thieves having taken over a brig, and then as prisoners in chains being transported back to Tasmania after capture, were realistic.
The Ship Thieves by Sian ReesThe true tale of James porter, Colonial Pirate. Well that's what is claimed by the author and it certainly gives a different and perhaps truer perspective of convict life in Australia in the 19th century, as opposed to that portrayed by Marcus Clarke in For the term of his natural life. It is wholly believable and appears well researched, being based upon the writing of the said James Porter and extant records from the period.I found it quite an interesting and entertaining read and this one is a keeper for my swelling library.
