This was an interesting memoir of a World War 2 Pacific Marine veteran, and it gives you a keener understanding of the hardships they endured and the sacrifices that were made to achieve that epic victory. It takes him through being a wide eyed boy recruit at 18 years of age to being a wise old man of 22 having watched his friends be cut down, having killed men in hand to hand combat, and having to steel himself through those happenings to continue doing his duty as a Marine. The tales of their training and confidence were very informative. My lone criticism of his memoir is his unabashed hatred for Carlson and his Marine raider battalion. I'm sure it is honest journalism on his part, but it was absurd for American Marines to hate other American Marines as much or more than they hated the Japanese who were killing their friends. His own personal prejudice against Carlson's Raiders lessens an otherwise heroic tale. The fact that Carlson's Raiders did an amazing work on Guadalcanal is never mentioned in this account even begrudgingly. The fact was that both Raider groups were elite groups who made great contributions to the victory. Also both groups were led by strong men of large egos who disliked the other and the way they went about their work! All in all though, it's a good read with great information.
This is an outstanding first person account of the war in the Pacific. It involves a Marine serving in the Solomon island chain. In fact, it’s easy for to say, it’s the best book I am aware of in the last 30 years on the topic of this campaign. I think it’s going to become a classic history book.Timing is has much to do with success in life. The author enlisted in the Marines in the days before Pearl Harbor. In addition to volunteering for service he volunteered for the legendary Marine Raiders. The result was he became a highly trained and motivated man.He was lucky to serve with men of his kind as he was headed to a green patch of hell named Guadalcanal. The rest of the book details various smaller raids and his eventual stand on Edson’s ridge. The books descriptions of these events remain some of the most brutal reading one could imagine. He details how the Japanese relentlessly attempted to kill as many of these men as they could. The author’s descriptions are a priceless account of these actions. One of the more interesting passages in this book concerns an old World War One veteran who fights at Guadalcanal. It was fascinating to read about this man and his record. They called him, “Mr. Leatherneck,†and rumor had it he forced a Japanese cruiser to move away after he shelled it with a few mortars.Overall, I enjoyed this book. In fact it lasted only a few days because it was so hard to put down. It is a well written and easy to read. If you enjoyed this book I would recommend Helmet for My Pillow by Robert Leckie, the classic With the old Breed by E. B. Sledge.
As an avid reader of many, many WWII books, both about the ETO and PTO (European Theater of Operations & Pacific), I have to say that this will now be one of my favorite all time accounts of WWII. Marlin Groft's odyssey through the World War from the time he was 18 through the age of 22 is written so vividly and with many everyday observations that it made the book a real page turner. I won't repeat what the book jacket or other reviews here cover, all I will say is read it! Much respect and thanks to Mr. Groft, a true hero , and all the soldiers (Marine Raiders, Marine Paratroops, Seabees, Navy, Air Force) that served along with him. They really did help save the world. I should add that I also read "American Commando: Evans Carlson, His WWII Marine Raiders and America's First Special Forces Mission" by John Wukovits (another excellent book) and it was interesting to read the other Raider Battalion's views on the other and also about the conflict between Edson and Carlson.
This is a must read for anyone interested in WW2 Marine Raiders lives and combat in the Pacific. The author lived it and sweeps us along in the retelling of it . The horrific violence of war and hand to hand combat are on display as well as all the emotions and errors that went along with it. Yet there is humanity and love within this band of brothers from which they derive strength to fight on despite the unrelenting forces of the enemy and the swamp filled jungle islands they lived and died on. I bow my head in deep gratitude to those weary but victorious warriors.
I don't think a memoir could be much better. This is absolutely worth the money. It covers exceptional detail on Mr. Groft's experiences in WWII. Though it covers Bloody Ridge probably better than any text I've read, that is a small part of the wealth of information in this book. No matter how many books and accounts you've read on the Marines experiences, this has a new information and really puts you into this man's experiences. If only all WWII vets had taken the time to put down their tours with such detail.Reading time for me was about two days.
I bought the MP3 edition and loved it. For those of you who enjoy 1st person military history...this is your book. Marlin "Whitey" Groft fought through many of the bloodiest battles in the South Pacific and came home safely. A brave Marine and a great book. Buy it!!
Depending the objective of your reading this can be a good read or a so-so read. If details are important, Richard Frank’s book is better. This is a good story told by one who was there and knows whereof he writes..
This book is a great read about the heroes that kept us free. I was on the edge of my seat through most of the battle accounts. Don’t miss this book !
