The capitalist paradigm now that people only work hard at tasks when rewarded with money is a false assumption. Otherwise, why would they do Sudoko puzzles, play Monopoly, and do crossword puzzles?Yunus points out that expecting all of us to grow up, go in debt to get educated, and then find a job does nothing more than increase the wealth gap so prevalent around the world. In this view, those who don't get a job are failures who must rely on unemployment insurance and welfare to live.The alternative view proposed by Yunus in what he calls "social capitalism"--not socialism because yunus is an ardent capitalist but he believes people have many motivations beyond money to be entrepreneurial. By setting up policies that open banking services to poor people and by providing education/mentoring in sound business practices, he demonstrates projects around the world that are turning poor places into hot beds of economic activity that actually meets the needs of the people living in those places. All businesses must be self-sustaining in the yunus model and cannot rely on charitable donations for their ongoing activities. Yunus gives many examples from projects around the world. Others would call this model a sustainable business model.If the Yunus model were adopted widely, huge corporations could not use their influence to bend government policy to their own economic benefit while providing minimal jobs and well being for common people.I highly recommend reading this book, especially if you have a problem finding a job!
I would really like to give this 4.5 stars. I think this is a book is a must read for anyone who is concerned about unemployment, low wages, high housing costs, and the climate. The half star deduction is due to a lack of information on the nitty gritty, when a social business is formed what are the people paid, how much goes to the founders, etc. Starting a social business to address a social need is a great thing to do and to redirect profits to expanding the company to meet more needs is also great, but what is a fair salary for the people running the company? Do you look at a salary spread of a certain percentage between the lowest paid worker and the highest?Even with the faults mentioned above I think this a great book to get people thinking about how we can change society to help more people and to encourage younger workers to look at going the entrepreneur route to decrease unemployment.
This is a really fine book offering an alternative vision for doing business. Bought a copy for my college freshman granddaughter and she read it cover to cover and using it in her college classes already. Yunus is one of those rare game changers in our world.
This book was an endless listing of the businesses and organizations that have partnered with Yunus. There's very little detail about his social businesses, how to setup or run one, or where to find out more. This read like promotional material for his next airport hotel seminar.
This book gives me a new perspective of how to look a business and charity. It opens my mind that those two can be married to create a sustainable social-value-creating enterprise.
Have brilliant ideas to improve economic. At the last few chapters just give examples of social business.
