Our little one loves all of Rosanne Thong's books (Green is a Chili Pepper, etc) but this is definitely the weakest of the group. The meter of the rhyme switches for the last shape, which is confusing when you first read it through, and some of the rhymes are a little weak. I consider throwing in some random person's last name for the rhyme to be both a bit lazy as well as confusing for kids who are going to ask 'Huh? Who is Mrs Chin?'But ... it's still a favorite around here when it comes to story time. The amount of words per page is nice and short, so our little one doesn't get too bored staring at the same pictures.
We read 3-5 books to our 28 month old son everynight. To keep from getting bored, I purchase new books every month to reflect the holidays/seasons. Although Chinese New Year is long past, we still read this book every night - along with Red is a Dragon and Dim Sum for Everyone! The pictures are gorgous; prose is clear yet still vibrant. This author has a real talent for creating age appropropirate material but not "dumbing it down" or being "too cutesy." Totally recomend this book. It does a wonderful job of teaching shapes ... and after every shape it asks "what else do you see that is this shape?" We use this question as a prompt for my son to look around his room for the same shape. Really brilliant piece of writing for young children.
My Caucasian daughter is in Cantonese Immersion school. We love getting the Grace Lin books to learn more about Chinese culture. I use these books in my preschool as well as I am a preschool director. I can always count on Grace Lin to have a book to educate myself, daughter and preschoolers that attend my school.
Love the Chinese theme. Story using shapes and Asian items. It was a little long for my toddler. But I think a 4yr old or older might enjoy it.
My granddaughter is one half Chinese and I was delighted to find a book to help her celebrate that side of her as well as teach her the early concepts of shape. The drawings are simple and colorful, and the examples are items that she will recognize from her daily life--rice bowls, mooncakes, Po-Po (maternal grandmother) and dim sum. The book would be a lovely addition to any home or school library.

This book is an excellent book to teach shapes. The drawings are magnificent. Children love to look at this book.
