About the Author
Jay Wile fell in love with chemistry when his parents bought him his first chemistry set. Many stink bombs and a few explosions later, he was hooked! He attended the University of Rochester to study chemistry and, while there, became fascinated with nuclear chemistry, eventually earning a PhD in that field. For several years, he did research under the auspices of the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation while serving as an assistant professor of chemistry. Dr. Wile has won many awards for excellence in teaching and research. In addition, he has authored or co-authored nine books.

Our family has used Apologia science curriculum for a while. The General Science is quite a step up from the younger series, and we plan to get an audio CD to go with this so that our auditory learners can better process the info. (They are all strong readers, but still enjoyed me reading aloud for science when they were younger. There is a LOT more reading with this, and I don't have the time to do that on a regular basis.) You can use the book alone, but I highly recommend purchasing the key and tests booklet. The notebooks are also a nice addition if they are in your budget, but not absolutely necessary.
Love it! Im so happy I chose this textbook for my daughters homeschool science curriculum. Ive been skimming through this book and the information is fascinating. I have to admit I was intimidated at first because its wordy and doesnt have as many pictures as other textbooks, but it really makes up for it with quality information. He presents information in a way that makes you think and presents all views of science so your student will be prepared to defend in his/her beliefs intellectually. If you are looking for a Christian science book get this!
Dr. Wile is a very thorough teacher of science and actually has a Ph.D. in nuclear chemistry. I have learned so much from this book in a very short period of time. It is a middle school curriculum and covers everything it should for that level. I am not sure why some of the reviews said it didn't. I have never really been highly interested in science, but I find myself wanting to read this book just for fun because my background in science is very weak. I would suggest just reading a few sections a day, so you won't be overwhelmed.It is a great introduction to all of the areas of science. There is a chapter on just about every scientific topic from the history of science to physics, archaeology, human anatomy and physiology, and much more. My favorite part about this book is that he speaks as a Christian scientists and shares how Christianity is not opposed to science at all and actually provides a worldview where science exists. The Roman Catholic monks preserved not just the Bible but also great scientific works. People are probably more opposed to science because it usually comes at it from such a evolutionary, atheistic perspective, and this book shows that that does not have to be the case.
This book is laid out well. The suggested reading for each day is an achievable goal?
All three of my children went through this book and we all loved it.
Bought these on behalf of family. They love the Apologia books for the versatility and ability to have self-directed learning across multiple age/grade groups.
We have always used apologia but this is the first year for a more advanced science. My son is only in 5th grade but we are using this text (which states it's for 7th grade). I have had no difficulty with him understanding or following along with it! He loves it, especially all the experiments.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a complete science curriculum with a Christian focus!
