This book was recommended to me by my therapist while I was going through some challenging times. I've been reading it now on and off for nearly 3 years and continue to gain insights and traction from it in multiple ways. In that regard it has become a great cornerstone for me of some of my mindfulness practice as well as continues to help me see things in a different perspective. I really enjoy how the book dives deep on simple stanzas in different ways, appropriate for the different passages, rather than being clinical and repetitive in its approach.I highly recommend this, the way that I've approached it has been to go deep on each "chapter," reading the same part every day for a week, and then occasionally reading through everything again. It's definitely a book that benefits from revisiting and deep reflection and I appreciate Ken's introduction prefacing that well in exploring his path to really appreciating how much the 37 principles have to offer.
Here is my review, by way of multiple digressions :)My first exposure to Ken McLeod was a 2 day non-residential retreat in Morro Bay California. Interestingly, this is also where I picked up my copy of "Wake Up To Your Life". The 2 day retreat was dedicated to the 37 practices, and I still have my heavily marked multi-page printout that was given to us as a partial guide to the practices, to go along with Ken's verbal teaching on the subject. Many years later, I'm still weaving my way through "Wake Up...", and also thoroughly enjoying "Reflections on Silver River", so much that I purchased a copy for my father in Montana, as a thank you gift for introducing me to meditation and Buddhism in general.I'm a searcher, a learner, a consistent meditator, but also a person who rarely finishes a book 100%. Reflections is just my kind of book, dense and thought provoking, easy to consume in small bites, while still giving profound food for thought. I usually read one or two "practices" with Ken's interpretation before I go to bed. I ponder while I'm falling asleep, a perfectly peaceful way to close out a day. I have always appreciated Ken's straight forward, no BS approach to translation and explanation of just about any topic in Buddhism that he is asked about (I recommend his podcast, in it I hope you can hear how he considers not just the question, but who is asking the question).Reflections is yet another great work by Ken McLeod (I also now have a copy of "A Trackless Path", can't wait to get started on it). I needed a place to go after Suzuki's "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind". For me, Ken's work was the perfect place to go. Clear, precise, potent, and humble.Enjoy your path, wherever it may lead,Peter
This book is very thought provoking and deep. Many traditional commentaries explain the 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva, but this book asks some very important questions in regard to these teachings and makes the reader really think about how to practically apply them in your life. Many times since reading it I have been going along and something happens, and the ideas in this book come to mind. It has enhanced this practice for me immensely.
Reflections on Silver River presents very important Buddhist teachings in short, succinct chapters, each one filled with challenging questions, material for many kinds of reflection, and suggestions as to how to bring the teachings into our every day lives. What makes this book so relevant to the times we live in is that the examples given are taken from Ken McLeod's own experience of years of practice and his life experiences. At the same time each chapter allows the reader to interpret the commentaries and texts according to his or her own problems and experiences. It is a very well written book, a first of its kind on this particular text, using direct language, easy to understand while profound in its implications.
Ken McLeod translates and comments on one of the great Buddhist texts, the 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva, by the 14th century monk Tokme Zongpo. The text and McLeod's commentary are surprisingly, immediately relevant to our lives and the world today. Every page contains questions and insights that shed light on how we can engage more fully in our experience of life today, right now. McLeod writes in a direct, clear way that is accessible. While the topics are life and death matters, the commentary is leavened by a wit and lightness that keep you turning pages. A worthwhile read for anyone interested in understanding the path to compassion for themselves and others.
I've read a lot of Dharma books and this is fabulous. Chapters are short and pithy and beautifully expressed. This book is appropriate for both beginners and advanced practitioners. The 37 practices of a Bodhisattva encompass the entire path.
This book was recommended to me by Pema Chodron and was used by her for an online seminar. I have read McLeod's book through several times, and it continues to be a source of wisdom whenever I pick it up for inspiration or for contemplation. Highly recommended for anyone who is seeking the understand Buddhist philosophy in plain and simple language.
This book read like a contemporary classic. Straight from the heart, compassionate, wise, insightful, moving, and a page turner. To be read over and over again. Perhaps, Ken McLeod's finest work-- and that says a lot. Read this book. Feel the rain of blessings.
