About the Author

Geshe Lhundub Sopa (1923–2015) trained as a scholar monk at Sera Je Monastic University in Lhasa and was debate partner for the Dalai Lama in 1959 before fleeing his homeland of Tibet in the wake of the Chinese Communist Occupation. After arriving in the United States in 1963, he taught first in New Jersey before moving to Madison, Wisconsin, in 1967 to teach at the university. Eventually becoming a full professor, he trained a generation of Western scholars. He also founded Deer Park Buddhist Center in Oregon, Wisconsin, which hosted the Dalai Lama's first Kalachakra initiation in the West in 1981. Geshe Sopa passed away at Deer Park in 2015. Dechen Rochard has a B.A. (Hons) in Philosophy (University of London) and a PhD in Buddhist philosophy (University of Cambridge). She also completed a traditional ten-year study program in Buddhist Philosophy at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics (Dharamsala, India). She is currently working for The Dalai Lama Trust translating texts.

It is a privilege and a delight to be the first to review this amazing book. I don't use that word lightly. As a student of Tibetan Buddhist since 1983 I have sought to immerse myself in both practice and detailed study. But this book (volume five in the series) has been keenly anticipated by me as it is the first truly comprehensive commentary and overview of Tsongkhapa's famous presentation of supramundane insight in his masterpiece: "Lam rim chen mo" (The Great Treatise on the Stages on the Path to Enlightenment).Geshe Sopa's approach is not only informed by his immense personal scholarship and insight, but also his anticipation, based on so many decades of teaching at an American university, of those subtle areas where a western student not directly trained within the debating rigours of the Tibetan monastic tradition might need some special assistance in approaching topics that confound even traditional established scholars and great meditators. But at no point does he seek to gloss over details or jump difficult topics in a bid to make Tsongkhapa's intricate presentation of emptiness somehow more approachable, quickly digestible to a Western reader. Indeed, some pages are so complex that I have only been reading two or three at a time and then contemplating them for a whole day before proceeding. One might call this "slow reading" but it is also a form of the most rewarding meditation as the purpose of Tsonghapa's text and Geshe Sopa's commentary is not to swamp us with philosophically intricate rhetoric but to drive a wedge in the hard block of our ignorance that blocks us from cognising the reality of how things, in reality, exist. What could be more important and worthy a task than this? So I am not being flippant when I say that one should treasure this book as a lifelong heart companion.Dechen Rochard, the editor, an impressive scholar in her own right, and a dedicated student of Geshe Sopa has worked on this book for many years, working closely with Geshe Sopa and then bringing it to fruition following Geshe Sopa's passing away in August 2014. So I wish to extend my deep thanks and gratitude to her also. And likewise, dedicate "the merit of the present volume to the swift reincarnation of Geshe Soap Rinpoche and to the continuing presence of all our teachers, especially His Holiness the Dalai Lama." As His Holiness himself says in his personal foreword to this precious book: All Tibetans should feel honoured and proud that Geshe Sopa, a man from far-away Tibet, could rise to the highest levels of Western academic attainment early on the basis of his Tibetan monastic education combined with his own brilliance and personal qualities. Publication of this excellent series of books {referring to the earlier volumes in the series] is a fitting tribute to an illustrious career"My only small quibble is that the index does not do justice to the subject matter. For example, the famous "one and many" method of performing an ultimate analysis is not indexed. Likewise, though the Jonangpa school is discussed, it is not indexed either. The view of the transitory collection is extensively discussed, but is simply cross-referenced to "egotistical view." But as egotistical view has an entirely different connotation in Western psychological discourse, and even popular parlance, this might prove confusing to the reader unaccustomed to trends in contemporary academic buddhist scholarship. In the end I started my own reference system. However, this is certainly not a deal breaker. And it is certainly vastly better than the pattern of publishing buddhist texts and commentaries without indexes at all - which seems to be becoming increasingly popular. In the end I purchased the e-book version also so that I could do searches for key terms. But that’s ok.I would like to finish with one poignant quotation from the text itself:"Tibetan scholars say that after Candrakirti, the Indian Madhyamaka was clearly divided into two: Svatantrika-Madhyamakka and Prasangika-Madhyamaka. When studying Madhyamaka it is important to understand both systems because we need to develop our reasoning skills in order to rid ourselves of ignorance. Ignorance is the cause of sentient beings' bondage in samsara, and the only antidote to ignorance is to develop a correct understanding of emptiness in accordance with the Madhyamaka view. Ignorance is an innate mind that incorrectly grasps its object. We cannot dispose of it simply like an old shirt." (page 315).If we could discard it so simply, why would the great masters like Candrakirti, Bhavaviveka, Buddhapalita, Tsongkhapa, and Geshe Sopa himself not have dispensed with all the complexity and simply pointed out a simpler and more efficient way? Why didn't the Buddha for that matter? But the task of tackling the ingrained habits of an ignorance so deeply habituated that we can't even or easily identify it as such requires other kinds of weapons entirely. So in the age of the ready-made and the home-delivered bite-sized chunk, this book, laden with jewels, is a means of penetrating deeper and deeper into realms of understanding that open like magic upon arrival. it does actually all make the most profound sense. So our effort as readers is immensely rewarded.As my teacher in Melbourne, Australia, the Ven Geshe Doga said: "There is no such thing as emptiness for Westerners". But to say this does not mean there is only emptiness for Tibetans, etc. either. It means we should relish our current personal capacity for intelligent investigation of the way things actually are, not the way they inherently appear to be due to the imprints of innate self-grasping ignorance. To rest with our idle presumptions or unexplored ordinary perceptions is to simply waste precious time.
