Hard to separate my awesome experience of the country in low season from the book- but I'll try.The relatively thinner book from getting a SE Asia compilation makes it FAR more approachable. The glossy outside and light weight made it very attractive to fellow travellers. I made a lot of new "friends" sitting next to me in hostels, boats down the rivers or mini buses to excursions while reading this. The color sections and photos were fantastic.with the dramatically changing landscape of Laos (dams being built) it's good to have an updated book such as this one for my trip in May.
I like their guides. This was my go to source for travel in Laos where I spent 10 days last January. When traveling alone it is important to have detailed information and guidance in a guide like this.
I love the book it is easy to read and give me lot of information for our trip...

Useful and updated tips. Bought the Kindle edition so I would have one less book to carry in my travel-light trip, but realized mid-trip that a hard-copy would be much easier to quickly thumb-through.

In a clever turnaround, Rubina, though sorely tempted to let Sana suffer the embarrassment she did, persuades their mother to let Sana go alone. Khan is of Pakistani descent, and this tale of clashing cultural customs is based on an incident from her childhood. The story (and its lesson) comes to life in Blackall’s spot-on illustrations, which focus on the family, their expressions, and body language. You now know the plot: Responsible and image-conscious older sister Rubina, happy to fit in enough at her school to score a birthday party invitation, rushes home with the joyous news, only to be thwarted by the Emmy-worthy tantrum of horrid little middle sister Sana (the author herself), causing their harried Ami to make the rash pronouncement that, Western tradition concerning parties notwithstanding, Sana will be going with. And yes, Sana is breathtakingly awful at the party; yes, Rubina is shunned by classmates as a result, and, the grand finale to the bratfest, Sana, after piggishly devouring all her own gift bag candy because "she doesn't know how to make things last," finds room in her gaping little maw for Rubina's delicious red lollipop as well. Any elder siblings reading this? Are you feeling that angry little squirm of injustice in the pit of your stomach as distracted Ami, instead of at least scolding Sana for taking what wasn't hers, instead proclaims it a virtue when the thieving little punk tries to earnestly hand over the sucked-on last morsel of lolly to her fuming elder sister and offers to "share?" Uggh! I'm well into adulthood and Sana's trickery still set my teeth on edge! The fate of eldests everywhere is to have to be "understanding" in the face of whatever monkeyshines their younger siblings perpetrate, and while parents may be fooled by a few quickly-produced tears and a quivering lip, we certainly aren't, are we? However, time passes. Sana is now in school, invited to a party, and Rubina's revenge seems imminent, as baby Maryam turns on the waterworks and the now familiar howl of "I wanna go too!" But--and here's where the story became unexpectedly moving--Rubina watches the play unfold, and, good sister that she is, chooses compassion over vengeance. And Sana, who knows exactly what game Maryam is playing and exactly what Rubina rescues her from, knows it. The final peace offering, a luscious green lollipop from Sana to Rubina, marks the beginning of their new, true sisterhood. Sophie Blackall's clean, warm, expressive illustrations are just exactly right, and this satisfying reformed brat and noble older sister tale becomes a love letter, from author Rukhsana Khan to her late elder sister Bushra, and from any grown-up sibling to a brother or sister they have grown to love and admire. My daughter asked for this book one day after school. She reads this book over and over again and she's 7 years old. The author really did a great job with this book.
This is a wonderful story about a Pakistani family living in the West and the children, especially eldest sister, Rubina, navigating cultural differences with their traditional mother. I can't count how many times my four year old daughter asked us to read her this book. The story is a pitch perfect account of the dynamics in an immigrant household. Rubina is so excited about getting an invitation to a birthday party that she runs all the way home from school. When she asks her mom if she can go, her little sister, Sana, screams that she wants to go to. Their mother says it's okay for Rubina to go to the party as long as she takes Sana. Rubina pleads with her mom that that's not how things are done here but her mom stays firm. So Rubina calls her friend, Sally, and asks if she can bring Sana. Sally says it's fine but Rubina is sure that Sally thinks she's weird. Rubina takes Sana to the party. Sana has to win all the games and cries like a baby when she falls down during musical chairs. Before they leave the party, Rubina and Sana get goodie bags with various treats inside, including a big red lollipop. Sana eats her big red lollipop in the car on the way home while Rubina puts hers in the fridge to eat the next morning. The next morning when Rubina goes to the fridge, she finds that all that's left of her lollipop is "a triangle stuck to a stick." She knows Sana ate her lollipop and chases after her. Their mom comes out and chastises Rubina for going after her little sister. Rubina complains that Sana ate her lollipop. Her mother says, "For shame! It's just a lollipop. Can't you share with your little sister?" Rubina wants to cry but holds back her tears. The worst part is that Rubina doesn't get invited to any more birthday parties "for a really long time" because all the girls at school know that if they invite her, she will have to bring Sana. Then one day Sana comes home waving an invitation to a birthday party and asks their mother if she can go. This time it's her younger sister, Maryam, who pitches a fit and screams that she wants to go. Sana protests that she can't take Maryam because Maryam's not invited. Their mother says it's only fair to take Maryam to the party because Rubina took Sana to her friend's party. Maryam desperately pleads with her mother but her mother is not changing her mind. Rubina is watching the scene unfold and finally speaks up and tells her mother not to make Sana take Maryam to the party. Her mother trusts her advice and says okay. When Sana comes home from the birthday party, she gives Rubina a big green lollipop, and after that, they're friends.The ink and watercolor illustrations by Sophie Blackall are absolutely lovely and wonderfully detailed. As a parent, this story was a cute way to talk through issues siblings may experience. As a teacher, I bought it because I appreciated that I could use it as a mentor text to highlight a parallel ending as an author’s craft move.
I purchased this book for my daughter last year, then three years old, and it became a family favorite immediately. My daughter has not only memorized entire passages, but she chose Rubina as her favorite book character for a Dress-Up Day at school, and she has continued to love it despite many, many readings. We've also given copies to at least ten other little girls. The illustrations and story are both lovely. The story thoughtfully and sensitively depicts the challenges and responsibilities of being an older sister as well as an American/Canadian-raised child of immigrant parents. The fact that the story is about a family of South Asian descent is of particular interest to our family, but the book holds univeral appeal.
I am always on the lookout for new picture books to share with my daughters. I ordered this book from the reviews/recommendations and I was not disappointed. I'm so grateful for this book. It is well layed out, well documented, well researched, easy to read, and easy to understand. Having had this book when I was in the process of getting multiple diagnoses would have been extremely helpful, but it is STILL extremely helpful even now. As new individual symptoms crop up, I am able to quickly turn to any number of sections to see if that symptom profile fits anything I'm dealing with - very helpful in reducing anxiety levels and unnecessary trips to doctors. The index is very helpful - you can find what you're looking for by symptom, by diagnosis, by warning signs, by medication, etc. Treatment options are discussed. The authors include helpful listings for websites, support groups, foundations, and the most current and widely accepted 'definitive' books on the individual diseases covered in this book. Of the books on my shelves, this is the book I would be least likely to part with.
It's okay. Nothing to ohh and ahh about. I found out some interesting facts on what I have but I already did research on the internet and knew that. I thought I would find added info but only found a few extra tidbits about what I suspected. Next time I will go to the library.
I purchased this book with many others for a dear friend of mine recently diagnosed. Therefore, I am unable to provide an informed review of the content of the book. I selected 4/5 stars for this book because I did flip through it and read a few random sections. I thought it was easy to understand and I haven't heard anything different from the recipient of the book. I would order from this seller again.

A knowledgeable exploration of an often ignored, but fundamental, part of Irish poet WB Yeats's work: his spiritual beliefs, his participation in occult practices and how these influenced his poetry.Graf begins by examining Yeats' connection to the Golden Dawn society, then proceeds to how his work has been perceived in literary circles and then seamlessly marries Yeats' poetry to his spiritualism and mystical practices. For a reader with knowledge of the esoteric practices that Yeats took part in, there may appear to be some repetition of the explanations of the traditions and symbols of Yeats' occult society. But, for those readers who have no exposure to these practices, this may help them grasp the complexity of thought and spiritual beliefs that drove Yeats to create the visionary poetry that he did.Graf's calm acceptance of Yeats' occult beliefs, coupled with an intelligent and well-informed breakdown of how these motivate his poetry, is what makes this text a vital contribution to understanding Yeats as both poet and man.The detailed exploration of Per Amica Silentia Luna (1916), as well as Yeats other works, makes for an absorbing read. This book is wonderful for any serious student of Yeats. I could not have been happier with it, there are some hard to find stories included, I would say this is a must have.
Revealing view into Yeats' magical life.
Susan Johnston Graf has done something quite rare in Yeats criticism. She has examined the poets occult beliefs without prejudice, accepted them for what they were, and examined exactly what they might mean to his writing, without any snide disclaimers or protestations of disbelief which usually accompanies such studies.In the first fourth of the book Ms Graf gives a clear summary of W. B. Yeats's occult background in Theosophy, his long association with the Order of the Golden Dawn and its successors, his formation of several Celtic magical orders, and his later interests in spiritualism. The real core of the work is the detailed examination of Per Amica Silentia Luna (1916) perhaps Yeats's most understudied and most underrated book. Squeezing meaning from this work is rather like deciphering a coded document, because it is written in Yeats's most carefully crafted, measured, and completely deceptive prose. Many turns of phrases heretofore interpreted as poetic figures of speech by literary academics are revealed by Graf to be Yeats's own private esoteric terms with specific, concrete meanings. Most Yeats scholars have considered Per Amica to be an obscure prelude to A Vision (1925 and 1934), but Graf reveals it to be a unique and revealing work, in many ways expressing ideas much different and different from its better known cousin.The final chapters deals with the series of mediumistic experienced by Yeats bride Georgie (known as George) Hyde-Lees which began to occur four days after their wedding in October 1917. These mediumistic experiences, became the basics of Yeats's new "philosophy" published the two versions of A Vision, and became the underpinning of almost everything he wrote during the later period of his life.Graf's book forms a powerful antithesis to Brenda Maddox's recent odorous book Yeats's Ghosts (1999), which suggested that the entire visionary experience of Yeates was driven by the ticking of Mrs Yeats' biological time-clock, and that she faked the entire mediumistic experience to keep her husband's interest and to deliver instructions about their sex lives designed to produce pregnancy in the most efficient manner. Instead Graf advances a more reasonable thesis: that the Yeats were engaged in a form of sex magic, guided the supernal intelligences toward the creation of "children of a higher order," perhaps an Irish Avatar for the new age. This does not negate the ticking of George's time-clock, or her desire to have children as a motive, but recognizes and accepts the deeply held occult convictions of both of the Yeates.Graf's book may signal a new "middle ground" approach the Yeats's occult interests such as been recently applied to the history of Theosophy by K Paul Johnson and Joscelyn Godwin. If so, she has performed an invaluable service to the study of Yeats.
A fascinating read, the book is packed full of information and well laid out and is well worth the read if you want to learn about W.B. Yeats.

I will start by saying I have Bipolar Disorder, and have struggled with it for many years. I've had some time off recently, so I wanted to really investigate the science behind my disorder. I started with two books on mental health policy over the past 50 years ( "American Psychosis" for a negative take, and "Better but Not Well" for a more positive, mainstream take), then I read the latest psychiatric information about the disorder- the suspected genetic causes , the brain chemistry approach, the neurological evidence from the official peer-reviewed literature. I altogether found it unsatisfying. Everywhere I turned, it was always "While the specific mechanism is unknown, it is believed..." or "While specific genes cannot be found, it does seem to run in families..." Even the neurological explanation didn't seem able to distinguish cause from effect, or come up with any predictive mechanism. I began to really question the mainstream, so I read "Anatomy of an Epidemic", which was an excellent summary of all the research showing that the brain-chemistry model is ineffective. I even investigated my own medication, and found that Lamictal, the primary drug of choice for bipolar treatment, was found to be ineffective in 7 out of 9 clinical trials ( Of course GSK only published the positive two).All Thomas Szasz really says here is that we can't view mental illness, that is to say, the major mood disorders and psychoses, as normal diseases. We can't pretend that mental illness is some exogenous force that is totally irrelevant of the victim's life experiences, the victims traumas and tragedies, and the victim's behaviors. In fact, new research into the pscychosocial explanation finds very strong evidence for the importance of these things in predicting the incidence of mental illness. And if its true, as Szasz argues, that there is this very strong psychosocial element, then therapy to understand these issues and perceptions and to allow the patient to change behavior is the best option for treatment. Again, research shows the efficacy of Psychotherapy in general as well as CBT specifically.Finally, I can say he is 100% correct in his assertion that much of psychiatry is inhumane. Involuntary treatment, and even the attitude that certain ways of life are "right" and other ways "bad," are means of controlling people. They are a way for society to get rid of undesirables and call it compassion, and on the other side, an escape valve for the oppressed. A key piece of evidence for this is that "homosexuality" was a mental illness for a long time, something we would scoff at now; that was a means of social control, not a means of helping the patient. Healing can only occur in an atmosphere of respect and dignity, where the doctor respects the patient's rights and autonomy, and where the patient takes responsibility.The book is quite plodding at points, but if you skip his abstract explanations and jump straight to the examples he gives, it is very clear. While I'm not convinced that all mental illness is purely a construction, I think Szasz hits the nail on the head for the general direction Psychiatry has moved.
As a retired health care professional, I wish that I had read this book a long, long time ago. It should be standard reading in all health care professional training, and especially in any field related to mental health. Unfortunately, the mainstream powers that be will not allow that. I recommend that you buy this book in paper and give it to any health care professional you deal with. The life and mental health you save may be your own.
Dr. Szasz presages a number of authors who wrestle with the various issues facing postmodern American society, especially those concerning how the dilution of meaning--that is, what constitutes truth in an objective sense--has impacted society in general. He also discusses how the misuse of broad definitions viz. mental illness have had the unintended consequence of misrepresenting and confusing bona fide clinical illnesses from those that are actually matters of moral and ethical judgment and choice. From Dr. Szasz's perspective, the postmodern attitude that "anything goes" is a chimera, an illusion. Postmodernism as a mindset has served to fragment society into factions with the conflict between individualism and collectivism taking front stage. I would recommend reading this book along with Kurt Andersen's book Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire (2017) to grasp the social identity crisis that is afflicting America in the present era, and that have been part of the American psyche since the Pilgrims...
A renaissance man for sure. I learned a great deal from this book and other books by him. He also inspired me to write my own book " The Loss of Grace in an Asylum," which is an authentic account of the oppressive criminal nature of psychiatry at Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital in New Jersey.
Szasz once said that he is the only doctor in his field who hands were clean, because he never medicated any of his patients. Very illuminating read, this is one of those books that will change your way of looking at the largely pseudo-scientific field of psychiatry. A worldview changer of a read!

I bought this book after a moderately good experience with the Praise Hits 1A book. However, I found my experience with this book much less satisfactory. Both books are leveled to match where you are in the Alfred books, but this one had poor arrangements. Both books have an adult accompaniment, but while the 1A version sounded like the actual song you were supposed to be playing without the accompaniment, this one sounds like the accompaniment to the accompaniment.
This book has fun songs in it, but they are cut very short and when played don't actually sound like the real song you could sing along with.
Bought this for my son for Christmas. I love songs in the book. I am sure my kiddo will love it as well. Good price for a good book!
This is exactly what the piano teacher asked for and much cheaper online than trying to go from store to store looking for it.
Would highly recommend. I've been looking for beginner books as I begin to learn to play piano, and this was a nice way to get to play some pop music while learning the basic skills.
